Just figured this is a good place to start.

Hi everyone....I am considered obese and really want to lose some weight.

I am currently doing the FIRM exercise and trying to watch what I eat but just wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions or ideas.

I weigh 239 and I am 5'7

I am currently listening to some excellent CDs by Mark Hyman, MD entitled Ultrametabolism. He goes through why we are overweight as a nation, and the inferior food products out there, etc. Really interesting. Website is ultrametabolism.com or drhyman.com. Good luck in your endeavor!

There is a lot of information to sift through when it comes to losing weight, and there is hardly any way to tell what is quality nutrition and exercise advice, and what is total bull. I have posted a lot in the daily health, fitness, and diet tips and you may want to go back and read that information. I know it's long and detailed, but honestly...losing weight is not easy for the simple reason is that it takes some time out of the day. In the end though, it is all worth it.

The first place to start is exercise. Exercise is the single largest determinant of whether or not you lose fat and keep it off. The important factor to remember here is light to moderate aerobic exercise (i.e. walking, Taiji [Tai Chi]) done for about 45 minutes 4 or 5 days per week. This sounds like a lot, but it is actually very important to exercise at this pace because your body takes some time to burn off the carbs and start burning fat as fuel.

The next area you need to concentrate in is your diet. Instead of eating three meals daily, start eating 5 or 6 smaller meals. There are many reasons for doing this, and the most important is that you are going to be getting a steady supply of energy throughout the day and eating this many times is going to cut down your cravings. Additionally, cutting down on fats is essential, especially saturated and trans-fats. Increase your intake of unsaturated fats found in canola oil, peanut oil, the oil found in almonds, etc.

Those are just two steps to losing weight and keeping it off. As I stated above, I have posted a lot in the daily fitness, health, and diet tips (go to the last page of the thread, that's where most of my posts are from since I'm new here).

Have fun and get healthy!!

To keep it REAL simple, cut out all sugar and flour from your diet. Without doing anything else, in one year you''ll lose fifty pounds.
