Rooster, I'm on the other side of the Outaouais river in Québec. Wearing my Canadiens sweater, cooking tourtière and ready to vote 'Oui' when I next get the chance. :D

Like Brenda aka toasty, ronin and now MidniteRain, I also hail from Beautiful British Columbia -- that's what it says on our license plates at any rate:)

There's seems to be another semi-lurker here who goes by the name 'Tempest' who's right here in Vancouver with me and it would seem he surfaces only to post the occasional (and the same) personal ad every now and then. He's not having much like, like the rest of 'em, best I can tell. Do a search on any of his ads and you'll see why.

Yeah. But there is some more things that we don't get here. I used to go to The Beer Store up there. A bunch of my friends picked up, I think, something called Labatt 50 that they don't sell in the States. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but on the labels there, they say Labatt here I think they say Labatt's. I'll have to look into that one. The same beer that you buy up there (name brand) has a higher alcohol content than down here. I used to live close to the border so that's why I went there alot.

Savannah

Hmmm.... gonna have to "look into" that Labatt/Labatt's thing myself. Can't think what is written on the label, but you always say, "Labatt's".

The Beer Store used to be called The Brewers Retail, officially. Like, whassat? But nobody ever SAID that -- you said, "I'm going to the beer store", so they changed the name to make it more obvious (for those American tourists, LOL).

I guess a couple of the major breweries got licensing rights to use the names Coors and Budweiser, which are nothing like the US originals, they taste just like Canadian beer. I think ours run around 5% alcohol, and every now and then they turn out a special limited brand of 5.5%.

So far all you've mentioned are ales (Labatt's 50 is an ale) which used to be less popular than the lagers -- Labatt's Blue and Molson Canadian being two of the best-known. When I worked in a bar, only really old men drank ales......... okay, that was 20 years ago, I admit. Beers go in fads (up here anyway), usually depending on who's running the catchiest ads at the time.

(Can you tell I'm not a beer drinker? :D )

I'm so delighted that Ageless is owned by Canadians (and fellow Ontarians, no less!) that I think I may need a beer....... ;)

"So far all you've mentioned are ales"
Molson Canadian
Molson Golden
Molson XXX
Are there any other beers that are not Molson?
I'd go to The Beer Store or The Duty Free Shop but I moved further south so it's difficult to find out what other Canadian beers there are.
How come nobody comented on the 'Lanny McDonald was great but he was no Guy Lafleur!' thing? Come on everybody...you have to know who these guys are.

Hey ms683... I haven't seen Molson Golden in a decade, I think. We used to drink it when we were underage, haha, cuz it was so cheap. We called it Molson Nelson though (because we used to party with these two guys, the Nelson brothers... no relation to "Nelson", 80s rock band).

Ah, the memories. Good times, good times.

I know who Lanny McDonald and Guy Lafleur are -- most Canadian gals develop a healthy appreciation for hockey, if they want to spend any time in the company of males! First you're dragged to various arenas to watch brothers play, then you watch boyfriends play, then the games on TV........ ESPECIALLY the Stanley Cup playoffs.

But I'm not quite old enough to be a Guy Lafleur fan -- try Wayne Gretzky in his Edmonton Oilers era.

What about the "dry" and the "ice" beers?? (I don't get the dry beverage concept myself -- some special brewing process I guess)

Am I going to have to venture into The Beer Store for research purposes? As far as I know, the 3 big breweries are Labatt's, Molson's, and Carling-O'Keefe. Labatt's and Molson's each produce dozens of different varieties, what with all the "lite", "dry" and "ice" variations of original brands, and each have both lagers and ales.

Pink, whaddya mean they don't make Molson Golden any more?? That used to be MY beer!! :(

Yep, Savannah, I think it's gone. At least, they don't have it here in BC. My ym is a bartender and works in a cold beer store, and he's never heard of it.

Wait, I just checked a website... here... looks like it still exists. Not out here, though... check this out...

"My Life is Beer" -- LOL!

It wasn't in a green bottle when I drank it -- and it was probably in a stubby (I'm really dating myself with that!).

According to "Rotgut", Golden is "great as a standard daily drinking beer", so they're selling it somewhere (kinda makes you wonder what he drinks on special occasions though, doesn't it? )

Wow, I forgot about Carling-O'Keefe. It's been years since I have heard that name. Next time I visit home, I'll have to pick up a case of that.

Savannah, it looked different when I drank it too... but we drank it in cans. It was in a gold can with a blue logo, I think.

Yep, Trish, I think Moosehead is Canadian!

Heehee, I just realized that it's sorta funny how the Canadian thread turned to beer... :)

ms683 -- Carling-O'Keefe beer trivia for you: their best-known beer was called "O.V." -- what did O.V. stand for? (NO cheating by searching on net)

Yeah, only Canadians could christen a beer "Moosehead"!

Heehee, I just realized that it's sorta funny how the Canadian thread turned to beer...

I don't even drink the stuff, and I'm blabbing on about it!

Hockey News!! Our local Emergency Medical Services paramedics just set the world record for playing the longest ice hockey game (92 hours!).

Is it Old Vienna? I have no idea why I think that, but I seem to think I remember that from an old ad or something...

Savannah
07-25-2003, 09:45 PM
Old Vienna it is!!

It was really popular around 20 years ago, but it seems to have faded into obscurity.

Yeah, I'll have to say Old Vienna too. I remember seeing the comercials on a local tv station (wutv) where I used to live. Gosh that brings back memories. Like when the Buffalo Sabres used to play the USSR team in exhibition games.
