lapafrax 02-26-2007, 04:23 PM Is cosmetic surgery immoral?
I don't really understand it. So some bimbo is upset because she has small boobs. So what? Accept the cards your dealt. Life was never all sweet.
Desert Spring 02-26-2007, 05:52 PM Cosmetic surgery encompasses a huge range of things besides breast amplication.
There's also breast reduction (had one of those) for reasons that had far more to do with health and wellness than sexual aesthetics.
It's really a personal thing having to do with how YOU feel inside YOUR body and nobody else's business.

i'm glad 2 hear a man say this!!!
at the end of the day, it (cosmetic surgery) doesn't change a thing (at least in my opinion)
a dear friend of mine who happens to be a dermatologist (not a surgeon) said to me once: "no man likes to lie down next to a woman who has been sliced and diced."
*sigh* and i sooo agree, life was never all sweet.
cheers.
kittylane 02-27-2007, 07:41 AM well some men do like to lay down to anna nicole look-a-likes, if they didnt, she would have never achieved the stardom she did.
good plastic surgery does not look fake and it would never be recognized if done by a good doctor.
what is wrong with a woman feeling good about looking good? nothing in my opinion, the world is a big place, if someone has the means to do something for themselves then i say, do it.
its really no ones business, i do however really feel bad for the wemon who make their bodies look like barbie, that is sad to me, it looks fake.
for those ladies i think its overboard.
its kinda like a diet or new clothes or a new hairstyle, it feels good to look good, there is no crime in that.
LADave 02-27-2007, 01:26 PM I like women to look natural--there's nothing wrong with wrinkles! I'm not keen on the facelift idea (altogether too popular in my town). I've written before about how I've been attracted to women in their 70s who look their age, but yet project self-confidence and comfort with their bodies that I find sexy. I stand by those posts.:)
special K 02-28-2007, 12:44 AM immoral?!? uh, no...
personal preference... ya
I'm neither a bimbo nor an immoral freak, but I've had a couple of procedures done (one motivated by a health concern, and one to rectify what having babies/losing weight, etc. caused that was not able to be mitigated in any other way).
My exhb had radical jaw surgery to correct his overbite that he was teased about as a kid....it was mostly for cosmetic reasons...was that immoral?
Many people after bypass surgery have extra skin that they can't excercise away, are they immoral for wanting to look good in public in shorts on a hot summer day?
Is the woman who, after breast-feeding three kids, has lost all breast mass and cries every day (and won't undress in front of her husband) because she is embarrassed feeling she has bi-lateral empty tube-socks (that is an actual description of a friend's breasts who later had implants).
Plastic surgery is a personal choice...if someone will feel better about themselves/their body image in a significant way, and they have the means to pay for it without going in debt or forgoing the kids college fund, etc. , then why is there any harm done?
Plenty of men lie down with "sliced and diced" women all the time...and many don't even realize they are;) . If my procedures put me in the sliced and diced category, then my man would heartily disagree with the quoted dermotologist.:D
Like Kitty said, plastic surgery for corrective reasons with a good board-certified/reputable surgeon (not done to Barbie-up or break some breast-size record) does not look fake and can have amazing results that can truly boost a persons self image...and that, I think, can be a good thing:) I have been absolutley thrilled with my results both times. Just ftr...
lapafrax 02-28-2007, 06:27 AM It's really a personal thing having to do with how YOU feel inside YOUR body and nobody else's business.
So it's only ne'er do well people who have no self-esteem and cannot accept things who get cosmetic surgery.
The way I see it, if you're ugly, you stay ugly. If you have small breasts, you have small breasts. That's the way it is.
Nibbles 02-28-2007, 09:30 AM All I can say is that atleast if I want to do something for myself to make ME feel better I am going to do it. I dont have to answer to anyone. How is it any different saying I am going to eat this whole cake and make myself feel better? If people want to spend the money to improve themselves then who are we to say no? I want to take Guitar lessons to improve my music ability. I don't care if people tell me I am horrible at it. There are tons of people out there who buy expensive houses and drive expensive cars to make themselves look better. We are in a self satisfying society. And IMO there isn't anything wrong with it.
Atleast I can change my outward appearance to make ME feel better, on the otherhand you can't change your innerself if that is ugly, and trust me we see it:rolleyes: .
We all should spend less time worrying about what others do and think, concentrate on ourselves. Spend less time worrying about what you cannot control and you will be much happier in life.:p

Again, markets can self-regulate themselves. And who is to say what a person can or cannot put in their body? Isn't it THEIR body?

So true and nicely put. So I refuse to worry about whether someone agrees or disagrees with the whole notion of plastic surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, and I will continue to do my "tuning up and maintaining." I'm a happier person when I feel good about myself.
skatergirl 02-28-2007, 12:10 PM however, i don't think it's wrong, especially for re constructive purposes like special k mentioned.
joelstrouble 02-28-2007, 12:27 PM I have had a tummy tuck and I'm going to have a breast reduction as soon as I lose some more weight... (doctor's orders)
I really don't see how you can call someone a bimbo just because they are insecure about themselves... that is, in my opinion, closed-minded.

Self-esteem is based upon accepting yourself for who you are. Not from seeking outside things.
We aren't all born with equal traits. if you're ugly, you're ugly. Period.

If they're insecure, then they lack self-esteem and are mentally unhealthy.
Nibbles 02-28-2007, 04:29 PM Self-esteem is based upon accepting yourself for who you are. Not from seeking outside things.
This doesn't make any sense. We are constantly changing and learning as people. We have to seek outside things to help us BE who we are. No one knows coming out of the womb who we are.
I dont know a single person who doesn't have some insecurities about something in their lives but I don't consider them mentally unstable.

Nibbles 02-28-2007, 04:34 PM Why is this thread in Sexually Speaking?

lapafrax 02-28-2007, 04:36 PM It makes perfect sense. Self-esteem is based upon accepting YOU for YOU. It doesn't come any other way.
So really, people who "hate their looks" need to love and respect themselves more. It all boils down to a lack of self-esteem.
whiterose 02-28-2007, 06:29 PM I moved this thread to Health Chat.

So really, people who "hate their looks" need to love and respect themselves more. It all boils down to a lack of self-esteem.
Would you also also say that people who puts on make-up, shaves their faces, puts on parfume and dresses according to the time also have low self-estreem or is this different because this is changes that "everyone" does and therfor okay?
I don't see myself as someone with a low self-esteem, but I do changes all the time to adopt in to the different situation I have during the day/week.
This is not because I want to hide something but as a smart human being I have learned that I profit from acting different in different situation.
I also do this changes in what I wear. At home I wear no make-up and a jump-suit but I would never wear that in a meeting, not because I don't have the guts to do so, but the jump-suit isn't presentable for a meeting and I do profit from looking presenable.
Doing changes and adapting in to what is the norms is part of being human in my opinion, and not nessesary a sign of insecurty and low self-esteem.
(hope this makes any sence at all... since this is 4.30 in the morning and I just woke up from a head ache and are just sitting here waitning for the pain killer to kick in :( )
lapafrax 03-01-2007, 08:14 AM Applying make-up or shaving aren't permanent changes. And more often that not, people don't shave or apply make-up because the way they look makes them lack confidence.
Many people undergo cosmetic surgery because they claim they hate the way they look, or a certain part of their body makes them lack confidence. This is misguided, since confidence comes from within and not from outward appearance.
You don't have to be a supermodel to be confident in yourself. Anyone, notwithstanding how they look, can and should have confidence in themselves.
special K 03-05-2007, 12:44 PM people don't shave or apply make-up because the way they look makes them lack confidence.
Uhhh...yes they do!* Hello! How confident is an American woman ready to go to the beach who hasn't shaved her armpits for a month?? Most women who apply makeup do it EXACTLY because it boosts their confidence in how they look.
You are out of the loop, lapa...totally no clue about what motivates women (or men) to alter their looks in any way.
Teeth-whitening, dying gray hair, applying cover-up to acne....it's ALL about altering something to look and feel better about your appearance...BECAUSE YOU CAN. Plastic Surgery, when you can afford it and it's with a board certified surgeon, is a personal choice made for the same reasons, albeit more expensive and involved.
Why go to the grocery store with gray roots, stained yellow teeth, visible oozing breakouts on your face, unshaven legs, wearing sloppy/stained sweats and a baggy t-shirt when you can make a small amount of effort to look and feel fresh, attractive and self confident?? Personally, someone in the first scenario doesn't have heightened self confidence...they have NO self esteem and have simply let themself go (one sign of clinical depression which is total hopelessness and self-hatred!).
If someone has a body part that they have to look at daily (like gray roots, stained teeth or whatever), and it doesn't support their otherwise GREAT self image from within, and it can be altered to "fix" the issue, I say GO FOR IT !!!:D
Nibbles 03-05-2007, 03:54 PM Yea, what she said! (snaps to you Sp K!)
