Our First Bout With Prejudism

Okay, so everyone assumes my husband is American until he opens his mouth. Normally, this is a fun surprise and people are quite taken with his accent. Yesterday, however, we had an interaction with a jerk.

We were at our favorite pub watching an English football game. There are five televisions in the pub and four of them were tuned to basketball. Just one was tuned in to our game. This guy sitting next to me asked the bartender to switch that one television over to basketball too and, when he did, we - and another British-American couple - said, "Heyyyy, we were watching that!" The guy to my right says, "You'll get over it!" My husband says nicely, "Look buddy, you've got four televisions playing what you want on them. We're just watching this one telly so we can enjoy our game!" to which the guy responds, "Look 'buddy. You're in AMERICA now so get over it and learn to watch a REAL sport. In fact..." and he passed the bartender $10 to keep the channel on basketball.

What he didn't know was that the manager is a very good friend of ours... and he happens to hail from Ireland. He was right pissed that anyone would have the audacity to turn off the game he'd been watching and changed the channel back without returning the guy's $10. :giggle:

What a rude jerk. Firstly to even suggest the television be changed when there are 4 others playing what he wants, but to say that about your husband! You know, I think some of these people are so fanatical about anyone they think of as 'foreign' that they cause more trouble than the thing they go on about.

Well I say 'right on' to your bartender! That's a good one there.

Oh boy, March Madness in the Midwest. Seriously, Kelley, it probably had more to do with that than about prejudice towards Tim, but thank goodness for the Irish manager! :w00t:

I really dont know anyone who is logical if they have had a few drinks, I think people "THINK" they are acting normal but in actuality they are loosing inhibitions.

Loose lips sink ships? I have said some pretty stupid stuff that I normally dont even think about when I was tipsy, so I really dont pay too much mind to someone under the influence.

If he was not tipsy though I would have to say that he was very arrogant, these types of people are everywhere, I ran into a fair share when I would visit Adam when he was in Italy, I am not saying the Italians were rude, Italy is full of many peoples from Europe.

Americans do not have the patent on stupidity. Its world wide.

The cheek...

and to think he was watching glorified netball. :p

We watch matches in an English/Irish pub in Philly so theres always lots of people there to watch the football. In fact, the same people show up every week, sometimes at 7am!

And when the world cup was on I managed to get a tv turned on for Holland v Portugal in a pub where footballs never on. Muted though.

Yeah, that kind of attitude is definitely world-wide. I encountered a lot of... not so nice comments in Europe when people thought we were Americans. It's ignorance and close-mindedness.

As well, some people just get weird with their sports... I don't get it, personally. I still equate watching professional sports with the whole "bread and circuses" thing (how the Romans kept the people from revolting -- make sure they are fed and entertained) but I try to enjoy it for my YM's sake... it can be fun, but I really dislike how seriously a lot of these people take this stuff! :notsay: :fight: :mad0136:

This is just weird. From my observation, most Americans love anyone or anything veddy British. Rule Britannia!:D

Should've turned the tv up loud enough that it drained out his beloved game.

Some adults weren't beat enough as kids, lol. :dummy!: <--- I love this smiley.

I know people are rude 'round the world, but here there is a blind, arrogant, World King attitude that surfaces frequently. And when those same people leap off the cliff of logic and shout pride and justice just because their government "said so", it really is sad, and scary.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, I just felt I needed to explain myself. It's like how Americans tourists sometimes don't cater to the fact that they are on foreign soil. It's just one small part of this country that I don't like. Maybe it's because we ARE a major world power, that and as a whole we don't get out much. (beyond our borders) I don't know.
