Permanent Makeup

This topic comes up now and then on this site, I know.

I don't wear a lot of makeup. On a regular day, I'm wearing really light-coverage foundation, some creme blush, mascara, and sometimes a little powder eyeliner along my upper lash line. At night, I might wear a little extra mascara, super subtle eye shadow and a little more liner.

I like to go without makeup, especially in the summertime, although the one thing that I rarely go without is mascara. (Good waterproof mascara is my best friend in the summertime!) I like the 'natural' look but I don't have tons of eye lashes so even having them tinted (dyed) doesn't make them look that much better when they're 'naked'.

I'm thinking of having permanent makeup for lash enhancement done. I am petrified that it's going to look like I have eyeliner on all the time, though. My tattoo guy actually does this kind of work, and a gal who works for him says that he does a really good job. I talked to him about it today but after I asked a ton of questions and left, I realized that, duh, I hadn't asked to see pictures of his work.

I will, of course, go back this week and ask to see photos to make sure that what he's calling lash enhancement is not something that I will consider to be liner.

I can't find any photos online of just lash enhancement. They're all of perm eyeliner with and without lash enhancement.

Wondering if anyone has had this particular procedure done?

Haven't had this done, but I have been curious about it, too.

When I was younger, I had the longest, darkest eyelashes! Now they are turning blonde or something (not white, though one or two are white, too). Also, a whole section of my bottom lashes at the outside corner seems to have fallen out at once and don't seem to be growing back very much either.

I also don't like to wear make up anymore (despite the photo in my avatar here - that's a picture from a holiday event and I was all dressed up).

But the washed out look I'm getting now makes me feel like I look like a cancer patient. So if I'm going on an interview or something, I'll wear the make up and mascara, but I also notice that no matter what type of eye make up I use now, it all seems to clump and flake down my face, like my skin is really too dry around my eyes or something.

On the other hand, one of the permanent make up things seems like it would look too stark on me.

And this is my concern, as well. I like to shape and tint my brows...but not dark, just enough to fill them in a teeny bit and give them better shape. It does NOT look like makeup. I don't want to wake up and look like I have makeup on.

Nazoor, have you tried tinting your lashes? If you still have good lashes but they're just mostly lightening up, tinting might be your solution.

I do this off and on because my lashes are light brown with blonde tips so it does look better (especially if I have my brows done, too); but my problem really is that I just don't have a lot of lashes (or brows). I'm just not a furry person. I hardly have any hair on my legs or arms at all, and the hair on my head is very fine. So tinting may show the length off (which is good) but doesn't give my eyes any additional 'definition'.

Thanks, doll.

Again, though, they're all of 'eyeliner', not 'lash enhancement'. The eyeliner look is EXACTLY what I'm trying to avoid.

To each his own, I guess, but those pictures looked kind of scary to me.

They made me think of kohl though. I've used that before and it also helped with getting rid of the bloodshot eyes. But again, kohl can be sooooo dark. I want a more natural look, like.. healthy looking without looking like i really have make up on.

Hmm... I haven't tried kohl in years though. Maybe I'll experiment with it today.

The thing I'm afraid of, Goddess, of tinting my lashes, is that it's so close to my eyeballs, and I can just bet I'd have an allergic reaction. My daughter had her hair colored and had a reaction, and it was burning my eyes, too, and I didn't even have my face up to her hair.

My "permanent" eyeliner was gone in two years. I wonder how permanent is "permanent" supposed to be.

When I was getting my tattoos done there was this women who was getting her eyes done. I think eyeliner or something, I was too busy dealing with my own pain to really pain attention to what she was doing. But I know my tattoos are permanent as in forever so I'm pretty sure hers has to be permanent. But my friend was watching her get it done and she said that is was like a different type of niddle and they gave her something for the pain, I got nothing.

Donna here,

I live in Asia, most men and women color their hair. They want to look younger.

I can not comment on success stories for color tinting around the eyes. But what I see in Asia, are when women are older and they have had eye brows tinted and they are getting greyer, the stark difference on the face is not attractive. Dark brows seem to emphasize wrinkles. Even I see this on women who had attractive greying hair then they color their hair quite dark almost black, from a distance yes they look younger, but up close it is too drastic, the softness of the hair getting lighter, gives me a gentle feeling about the person.

I am worried about looking older, but I feel I look fresh and clean. Hey I want to appear and be spunky, alive, fun, carefree, full of llife and aughter....

So I guess what I am saying is there a way to give a little color that would sort of fade into the skin and not look stark as the persons skin or hair lightens?

Bye for now,

Donna

I always noticed that, too, i.e., that the older the women get, if they wear darker make up and hair, they look too ... harsh, I guess is the word. Too hard. I can recall after observing a lot of that when I was younger and thinking to myself I wouldn't do all that as I age. I do notice that the darker the make up, the older I look now, too. When I was younger, the darker make up was "dramatic" and alluring, I guess. It seems it has an opposite affect as I get older.

By the way, I tried the kohl the other day and .. BLECHHHH!!! Too drastic! Yuck. It looks awesome on my daughter, but not on me anymore.

I bought some eyebrow mineral powder coloring stuff (Bare Essentials?) and use that. It gives the slightest shadow affect that will define my brows and keep them from completely disappearing on my face, but not dark enough to come jumping off my face when you look at me. When the saleslady picked it out for me, at first I thought "why's she giving me something for blondes? I have such dark brown hair." But it works well.

I do believe I look younger without make up most of the time, so I will wear the make up only for a special occasion now, when I know I don't have to wear it for hours and hours and hours in a day. It will look fine, using some oil based creme type pencil eye liner, smudged, and then shadowed with powder. But if I wear it too long, it starts to just make me look yuck again.

I think I would regret it if I got some kind of darker permanent coloring. As I got older, I think the darkness of it would just look more and more dark and thus make me look more and more old.

*sigh*.. wish I could stop myself from worrying about what I look like when I get "old" though.

Tatooed makeup is permanent, but if you use the regular iron oxide pigments, the colors can change, especially if you expose yourself to a lot of sun. And since it is applied way down under the skin, the immune system can take some of the pigments and destroy them.

There is another kind of permanent makeup that is applied without the kind of equipment tatoo artists use....more like a hand stylist that gives a fine feathery look and rather than going too far down where the color can fade because the immune system attacks it, or change with the sun. It is not iron oxide pigments. You can buy the video and stuff to do it yourself or find an artist in your area. I forget the name of it, but if you google permanent makeup you will find it.
