just wondering about you and your mate deal with music.
we don't have a problem at all because i love music from the seventies and eighties and detest bubblegum pop. he has an open mind about the new sounds manufactured "nowadays"
but does music cause any rifts between the two of you at times?
i know that may sound like a silly question, but i'm a big music nut. just wondering if there were some funny stories out there, regarding this.
do you turn down the volume of the radio at traffic lights or slouch down because of the songs he listens to? ;)
datura81 02-17-2003, 05:00 AM Yeah, we don't really see eye to eye on the whole music thing. I like a little bit of everything, whereas he likes very few things and I find most of them horrendous. Whether I play something from his younger days ("ah, this stuff is so old") or something new like Eminem ("yeah, great lyrics buddy") I get a complaint. Luckily he's not too into it so I control all CD players. The only cd we've ever both REALLY liked is Susan Tedeschi's "Just Won't Burn", but I don't really get down to his other stuff like Keb Mo. Cd I give him the most shit for owning: Del Amitri!!!!! (puking noises here)
Felix 02-17-2003, 10:10 AM My boyfriend is a big fan of bagpipe music. I discovered this when I *****ed about the fact that, where I was working over the summer, we had a troupe of bagpipers playing for 4-5 hours a day. This was apparently his idea of heaven!!! Argh!!! So, yes, lots of switching off the radio when I'm in his car...
Also, a weird one is that his CD player seems to be set up to blare out Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" if you so much as look at it. Is he trying to tell me something???
Have a better one!
Felix
oneofthoseguys 02-17-2003, 10:18 PM We both switch stations constantly.
Seeing as my kids are almost her age (Yikes, that's still weird to imagine) I've always listened to their music and visa versa.
Thankfully, she's not into bubblegum pop, like Brittany Spears. I might have a problem with that. I think we mostly listen to alternative rock and we both enjoy it. I forgot, what are guys my age SUPPOSED to listen to?
MerAlove23 02-17-2003, 10:43 PM My fiance is 44 years old and he LOVES my music.. I am 27 and LOVE TECHNO..... all 80's and 90's music... although he loves alternative rock and all the new rock bands so I lucked out... Yeah he likes disco... because he is a DISCO baby... heheheh.... but We tend not to really have a problem...
mbsnbcr 02-18-2003, 11:05 AM I like to think that my taste in music varies and that I am open to lots of types. I especially like music from the 50's to the mid-70's. He really likes 80's music and it is just NOT for me. I'm sorry all you Journey fans out there, but I can not stand it. I love jazz, Joco Pastorias, etc. and he doesn't "get it".
But, it comes down to the same as tv; I don't like football, he loves it. No big deal.
Sometimes, I wish I was with someone who likes jazz and blues like me. But then he may have another difference that I would like even LESS! Can't have everything, right?!
;)
EMCAD80 02-18-2003, 11:56 AM Hip Hop, Oldies, you name it...we love it. Sometimes he'll give me a funny look when I know words to some songs. He'll give me the whole 'this came out before you were born!' line. It's great! We both love music and dancing.
sweething2002 02-18-2003, 03:29 PM WE BOTH ARE IN TO THE SAME KINDS OF MUSIC.WE MOSLY LISTEN TO SOUL AND JAZZ.
cuddlebear 02-20-2003, 12:06 AM ugh..music and sex....
well, i guess that i'm lucky that my littlebird likes much of the same music that i do.
i'm a musician myself and i happen to like many, many different types of music, new AND old.
i have made some cd's of my favorite "oldies"(strawberry alarm clock, kinks, small faces, beatles, pink floyd, captain beyond, you know, mostly sixties and seventies stuff.
hey, the sixties were a great time for music!)
anyway, she loves the stuff and i WAS frankly surprised cuz most of the young people i know seem to see that stuff as corny or something.
But it's NOT!
anyway, i guess i am less fond of the music she likes. techno and rave stuff. Portishead and Rammstein, ugh...well that stuff is kind of scary to me.
too "dark" for me i think.
but there is other "newer" music that we both like, (sarah mclachlan, poe, bjork, dido, natalie merchant, and stuff like that.)
and of course, she simply adores MY music.
music is an interesting way to share memories and i think its nice to be exposed to music you are unfamiliar with.
it helps to "broaden our horizons" so to speak.
anyway, i guess my point is, age really doesn't have anything to do with musical preference's, ALL music is good and we all like different things.
i have friends my own age that hate the music i like and viceversa.
it's all in what we are 'used' to, what we have been exposed to.
and what music makes us happy, matches our moods, or makes us want to sing along is an intensely personal thing for everyone.
it's like food.....we all have different "tastes'"
nothin wrong with that
GreeneyedWoman 02-27-2003, 07:57 AM This is what's great about having a teenage daughter! Her music bridges some of the small gap in musical tastes we have. He loves the '50's and '60's rock and roll, R&B, and classic rock. We agree on the classic rock. We love newer stuff thanks to our daughter, the Goo Goo Dolls, The Wallflowers, No Doubt, and I can't even believe this one: Good Charlotte!
So as long as I don't have a steady diet of Chuck Berry I can live with it.
Besides it's one of his few faults. :D
mazzyn 03-01-2003, 03:45 PM I always have to have music on. Me and my guy don't have the same taste in music, but I think he's learning to like what I do. Plus, I try not to play the stranger types of music when he's around, and I stick to the softer female artists. It's so cute when I'll have a CD playing and he stops mid-sentence to ask me who the artist is.

Leila 03-05-2003, 01:29 PM LOL, Felix! My dh and I MUST have been sent to each other by God, because we both LOVE bagpipes! What are the odds of that???
I like almost anything, so it wasn't a big deal on the music thing.
Except I get a little annoyed listening to Four Seasons three times around. I guess it's that whiny voice "Sherrryyyyyyyyy" Ack.
He doesn't care for much alternative stuff, but oh well. What we love together is what we tend to play when we're together.

Eep!!! Oh well, I guess I should be thankful that you aren't inflicting bagpipe music on poor unsuspecting members of the public ;-)
Have a better one!
