bijou 06-09-2007, 12:42 PM Okay, as those of you who participated in the writing to be understood thread know by now, I am an irretrievably ancient old bat.
Loucine's update made me think about all the times I've wondered about online games and worlds and what they're all about.
So this morning, while lolling around, nursing my hangover and - sorry if I'm repeating myself, but you know how we old folks are - fondly thinking about Rocco on the ice last night, I thought, well, let's check it out.
So I spent the last hour registering, downloading and mucking about with my new avatar on Second Life.
I've partly avoided this before now because I am already alarmed at just how much time I'm able to waste messing about on the computer. And in case you doubt me, I think I changed my avatar's hair about 9 thousand times and I'm still not happy with it.
So here I am, about to embark on a second life, and I started to wonder: how many of you engage in this stuff, what do you do, what's the thing that keeps you coming back and if I don't want to meet a guy, what can I look forward to?
I promise, no grammar checks, no tantrums about not using the pluperfect apprtopriately, just go easy on the txtspk.

Inahnia 06-09-2007, 02:30 PM Hey Bijou:
Check out the thread in this section titled "Met Online in a Game" if you want haven't already. It will give you some idea of who is playing what games. Personally, I haven't played Second Life, since all my free time is spent with my husband playing Neverwinter Nights 2, where we have numerous avatars that we role play depending on whether we want to play "good" guys, or "bad" guys in the game world. It's a chance to pretend to be someone else, somewhere else, living a very different life. I expect Second Life is somewhat like that, too, but maybe someone who plays will speak up.:)
Rozie 06-09-2007, 02:44 PM If you aren't looking for a romance, here are some of the things I've done. I've been a punk girl, a vampire, built a home, ran a dance studio, travelled the galaxie (as a punk Zabrac), mined, crafted, raised animals and met a jillion fascinating people. I've kept a party alive with magic as we fought monsters, when some of them were down to less than 1% of their original HP (that is positively thrilling) and laughed as we recounted the battles.
I think the whole notion of a safe fantasy world to play in is a great prescription for boredom and loneliness.
Bodhi Tree 06-09-2007, 03:12 PM Oh wow !!! come and have a party at my place :D seriously
I never signed up on Second Life to meet anyone. If you read my profile, you'll understand :)
To me SL is a place where I can really lay back and observe humans in action.
How many times have we used the expression "re-make the world" ?
Well here we are, the Lindens have allowed people to re-make the world. You have vast space, the world if you wish and you can do what you want with it. No rules, no restrictions and most of all NO FEELING OF GUILT.
The result is shockingly amazing. I'll let you discover.
PM me for my ava name ;)
marcy 06-09-2007, 04:33 PM It is possible to play these games (Second Life and There) and NOT "get the hookup", but beware there is LOTS of hooking up in these games. :)
If you find Second Life a little difficult, then take a look at There... the interface is a little easier, but doesn't provide as much individual creativity or control.
Enjoy!
marcy 06-09-2007, 04:41 PM Second Life and There are NOT games like NWN or WoW or SWG or any other "killing monsters and leveling" sense of those games.
Second Life and There are primarily social "games"... I put games in quotes, because truthfully in my mind, they are not games in the traditional sense. These are worlds... that you live in... now you can live in ways similar to your real life... in a home similar to your home... or in ways that are completely foreign to you. You can live in the sky and serve in the political systems which are inherent to those worlds. You can become a renowned artist or an underground designer. You can become a prostitute (they are rampant in these games). You can make yourself look like anything and everyone else or be completely unique. You can be beautiful or disgusting or both.
You can be all those things on the same avatar on different days or all on the same day.
It is hard to completely explain the experience. I think anyone who has an adventerous spirit and a possibly creative bent should definately try these "games" out... but be prepared to be completely sucked in! :D
jellybean400 06-09-2007, 05:20 PM I need to get a "First Life" before i go to Second Life :bgrin2:

I have to agree with marcy. Its almost as if its a never ending story if you will. In word of warcraft..you have classes Horde side and alliance..Horde consist of blood elves ( they dance like britney spears and males are napolian dynomite) orcs mc hammer dance LOL trolls undead and others...then Alliance is night elves (hookers i swear) humans dwarves gnomes and others.
Each one is different you can play a palaidian druids warlocks priest and many others
THEN you have proffesions to chose like you would a job..making clothes jewelcrafting blacksmithing and more.
BUt the quest the dragons the World bosses OMG fun!
The charector you play can flirt cry be rude all the things you would be or do in real life.
Its great FUN!!
I started out with everquest then WOW. I prefer WOw because of the graphics and beatiful features and lands they have. The quests are intense as well
bijou 06-09-2007, 05:31 PM I just spent some time hanging out with the lovely Loucine on SL. We agreed that my avatar has a lovely fat bum, and that Loucine's has the BEST hair.
I was well into creating my avatar when I realized I was making her look like me, which hadn't been my conscious intention. Once I realized what I was doing, I made her as like me as possible. Do most people do that?
I just lost a couple of hours and am still figuring out things like how to walk. I'm going to have to be very careful because this is altogether too compelling.
So much fun - so pretty, so cool.
How many people here are on SL?

/raises hand
Though in most games I prefer to be the ugliest race possible because then I don't hear, "Are you a chick? I didn't know chicks played this game."
I prefer to avoid completely useless banter like this. In real life, fine I'll suffer, but when I'm gaming buzz off. :tongue2:
I don't play SL but I hope you have great fun with it! Sorta reminds me of Oz which is now basically a defunct fishing game that probably most won't know, except maybe Marcy. She tends to know those off-the-beaten-path games. :D
Alawiy 06-09-2007, 06:46 PM Im to ascared ta post.
LOL!
I read an article about Second Life a few months ago. I can't remember what that was about, or why I found it interesting, but I recall that I wanted to check out the place myself.
(I think it was because it was an idea that a brother and I had about 12 years ago to make something exactly like it, but we never did get around to it - and now here it has shown up - someone finally did what we were thinking of doing.)
I haven't been to create an account myself yet. I probably went to the web site one day with that intention and then probably the computer crashed (like it always does) and I forget the 10 million things I was doing at the same time.
I wonder if I should go take another look at it? I'd hate to think I'd get sucked into spending all my time on that the way my son is with his World of Warcraft and other online games. Yikes... keeping up with this forum is about the best I can do these days with the time I have available, and I'm not even keeping up with this either. I'm tempted to get into the Second Life, but...... yikes.
Alawiy 06-09-2007, 06:56 PM Oh I remember now....
I went to check it out after I had done some copy editing on an article that someone wrote about it. The article was about how this guy built a mosque there or something (among other things). There was the religious question - can a person who goes to a mosque on Second Life for Friday Prayers ("jummah prayers") be considered to have fulfilled his Islamic duty? (Men are required to attend Friday prayer)

Now this is interesting - what was the answer?
Alawiy 06-09-2007, 09:27 PM No answer.. it was rhetorical question, I suppose, or one posed in the article to get a debate going.
It may be on line as a pdf file at this link:
http://www.q-news.com/buy-NA-Others.htm
but I don't remember what issue it was for. If I can't find it there, I have a copy of the article I worked on in my work files.
marcy 06-09-2007, 09:46 PM Honestly I do not create my avatars to look anything like me... they like look my alter ego, Marcy, and not me, Rebecca. I like to think of gaming me, Marcy, as Rebecca, but to the 10th power. LOL She is me, but me on steriods. ;)
I think this is probably the kind of thing that only gamers can appreciate.
P.S. Heard of it, but never played.
P.P.S. Party at Loucine's then or maybe Bijou's new pad? Just kidding... actually it would take me days to track down my SL account! Now create in There and I'll provide you a lovely corset to start you off!
Bodhi Tree 06-10-2007, 06:43 AM I made my avatar to look very much like me, with round belly, love handles and all. The only thing which looks totally different from real life is the hair. In SL I have ankle-length hair :)
It's amazing how most women there make almost anorexic avatars and most of the clothes are designed for skinny people.
One of the reasons that P noticed me was my looks. He was very happy to see an avatar that looked like a real woman, said he. :p
Harrison 06-10-2007, 08:33 AM I made my avatar to look very much like me, with round belly, love handles and all.....
Mmm, you stop that, Loucine! :D :p
Alawiy 06-11-2007, 04:27 PM umm... I am thinking that the Second Life article never made it into the magazine. I would say it was about the same time when the CNN interviewer got pelted with the virtual penises - probably not something that a respectable Muslim magazine wants to promote (even if someone is there building a mosque).
Bodhi Tree 06-11-2007, 05:16 PM Mmm, you stop that, Loucine! :D :p
Oh !! you naughty little devil !! :D
last1standing 06-11-2007, 09:01 PM ::: confused :::
What do the French know of love handles? :)

What do the French know of love handles? :)
Exactly!!!
Those French women are all making money from trying to tell American women how to become fabulously skinny like they are!! ;)
bubbleee 06-11-2007, 10:48 PM It would be fun to do an experimental meet and greet in a virtual world! I haven't tried that yet with a group. Have any of you?
marcy 06-11-2007, 10:53 PM Yep... thrown many a good meet and greet party in a virtual world.
Chamaeleon 06-12-2007, 12:09 AM woot i made a chubby char with big boobs a nice round bum and looking like me...ya..ROFL..im so addicted..*shakes her bum*
I play Second Life...well yea...kinda fun tho...buy a land, make a house, and stuff, meet up with a lot of people especially perverts...gawd there are so MANY of them! @_@
And YES it takes a while for you to do your avatar...well it takes a while tho...x_x;;;
One thing about SL they have this roleplay where you could actually join it but it will take a while for your application to get approved T.T
I wonder why it takes so long to be approved...@_@
If you play SIMs..or SIMs 2 or so....this game is recommended for you...a little bit different but its good . You can’t use cheat codes for sure and money are real moneys that are converted to Lindens (Currency known to SL)
^^
