the house I grew up in burned down

I found out today that the house I lived in the majority of my life thus far was set on fire last night.:(

It was vacant, so thank God nobody was hurt. The outside is still intact but I suspect there is major damage on the inside.

I felt so sad when I found out. I mean, I have so many memories connected to that house. I literally grew up there.

here is a link to a few pictures...

How sad. Why was it vacant? Had you ever any thoughts about purchasing it back and fixing it up?

Ugh Michele! I saw this on the news! I'm so sorry to hear someone I knew actually was connected to the house.

Do they suspect arson?

I understand the pain of seeing your childhood home go up in flames. Mine did years ago, but I remember at the time I was angry with WPXI because they just stood there broadcasting it to the world. It was painful to see others were going 'whoah!' as the few good childhood memories I had burnt up in flames. (I'm okay with them filming it now, I was just emotional at the time about it because it was still raw.)

I'm so sorry this happened to you. :(

I'm sorry,Michele!

One of the houses I grew up in (where I have my first childhood memories) was torn down because the farmer that owned it wanted to expand his weat field and I hate passing that place :(

Hugs....I can only imagine how bad that would feel. I am so very sorry. The inside may be gone now, but your memories will always be with you!

I know the feeling -- the house I grew up in was also set on fire (arson) and then bulldozed!

Actually, probably even more relevant -- the TOWN I grew up in is gone. It was a mining town and the mine shut down about 15 years ago. There is absolutely nobody living there anymore except for a security guard.

We do have a virtual community on the internet now though!

So sorry to hear that.:(

My childhood house is still standing, but I don't think I'll go look at it again. My parents kept it while I went from elementary through high school, because it was zoned for some of the best schools in the district. When I went off to college, they moved to the opposite side of town (Las Vegas, Nevada).

When I left for college 20 years ago, the neighborhood, though not fancy, was certainly OK. My folks put a lot of energy and creativity into the house. They turned a long wall of the living room into built-in bookshelves, cabinets and shelves for bric-a-brac. The yard was nicely landscaped with shade trees and shrubbery, along with 3 planting beds containing cacti and other desert plants. Dad built an attractive rail fence around the front.

Since then, the neighborhood has become a complete slum--right down to burglar bars on altogether too many windows. I was back to visit in July and my Dad and I took a tour of the old neighborhood. Our former house is completely unrecognizable. The fence and the landscaping are gone. Cars are parked all over the yard and assorted other big pieces of junk, like, for instance, camper shells not attached to trucks, complete the effect. Houses where childhood friends used to live have also fallen into ruin. It was all pretty hard to take.

Wow! I'm glad nobody was hurt but still... between that and PinkCat's post...

what a hollow feeling; kind of like when you're a kid and a best friend moves away? That's what I'd imagine, anyway.

thanks everyone for your kind words. :bighug:

I haven't heard anything on how the fire started. I'm suspecting arson. When my family and I moved we sold the house and in turn the people we sold the house to apparently moved out and were trying to sell it so thats why it was vacent. I wouldn't want to move back in it as my old neighborhood really went downhill in the past several years. It's just that I have so many memories connected to that house. I still dream about it, even moreso than I do about the house I'm living in currently.

I'm greatful I have my memories of growing up there.
