Harrison 08-16-2007, 05:57 PM That the USA can have a popular prime-time TV drama about a successful American businessman who's fortunate enough to have three (count 'em - three) wives (Big Love)....
but we CAN'T have one prime-time drama or sitcom about a successful OW who's married to a loving YM, and raising kids together, both of them just making their way through life??
LOL I am not mad or anything; I just think it's ridiculous and says a lot about sexism in Hollywood, that's all. I've said this before: At the rate we're going, pretty soon polygamy will be legal and mainstream, while people are still smirking at OW/YM unions and trying to put them down. It's all about who gets their message out there.
Harrison 08-16-2007, 05:58 PM P.S. Not trying to slam polygamy or anything. :D :p

Oh, the almighty dollar bill. Let's face it, people look up to rich people and worship money over anything that is worthwhile in this world. Why do people that don't believe in God believe in marriage? I don't get it?! What is the point of having 3 wives when most people can't even satisfy 1? This is purely status.

It doesn't bother me because I've never even heard of this show before you mentioned it. lol
Baglady 08-17-2007, 12:16 AM Well Harrison, write a pilot script and pitch it. I can imagine it now . . .
Theme: BBW, OW married to three younger men.

RobsGirl 08-17-2007, 09:07 AM Actually, there was a sitcom like that - Fran Drescher did it for FOX, then the WB while it was still around. It was on for two or three season - which is about how long Big Love will probably last as well, there's only so many storyline axis you can convert with those types of scenarios, although Fran probably could have kept going, there were still a few storylines they could have manipulated.
kindanice 08-17-2007, 09:14 AM I have never heard of it.
RobsGirl 08-17-2007, 09:21 AM It was called "Living with Fran" - it was a season fill in at the end of 2005 and basically ran as a season production during 2006.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402471/
(Bear in mind that this is the straight imdb side - it's updated mostly by fans so the entries aren't always up to date as they should be. On the imdbpro side, for industry workers, it's a bit more indepth.)
kindanice 08-17-2007, 09:24 AM Oh gosh. Sorry Molly, I was just answering Harrisons question. I wasn't very clear.:o
RobsGirl 08-17-2007, 09:26 AM LOL, sorry Kinda!! :o
RobsGirl 08-17-2007, 09:27 AM And writing comedy - especially sex filled comedy is hard, majorly hard!! I have a colleague who wrote for a season on Boston Legal and she said it was the hardest thing she's ever done - writing drama is SO much easier!!
ROSEBUD 08-17-2007, 09:53 AM Harrison...I only watch movies...I don't even have cable anymore, just too busy and uninterested in the shows. But that's fairly typical. It just seems some of these shows (and films too) are male Hollywood fantasies more than anything else.
The concept of a male lead with a female love interest who is actually the same age is radical (they have to be AT least 20 or more years younger), let alone an older woman. When I do see some castings where the wife is the same age or older, I'm quite surprised....I do see it happening a bit more. But it often seems that the leading men get older and the leading ladies get younger. And the former leading ladies are relegated to playing mothers, grandmothers, or some other frumpy role.
Fran Drescher's show, as I recall...I did see it a couple of times...was filled with dumb "boy-toy" jokes and far from realistic.
If Hollywood got a load of the real-life OW/YM stories from ageless, all the powers that be would probably collectively have a big heart attack!!! It would kill their concept of "reality".
I also agree that Hollywood promotes infidelity, disloyalty, and cheating in a relationship as well as casual sex. How many times do you see characters who are married, are engaged, or are otherwise involved suddenly meeting their "dream girl/guy" and they dump their current partner? And often they paint the current partner as either a drip, not worthy of the person, or somehow deserving to be dumped or cheated on. But I guess it's not "exciting" to have a character who has been celibate for three years after a long relationship, to work on "herself" or "himself" before entering a new relationship. God forbid you're not "with" someone at all times and also have someone waiting in the wings.
Kristin 08-17-2007, 11:51 AM I think Big Love will be around longer than 3 seasons.
Unlike the cliche-ridden Fran Drescher show, Big Love is a well-written, engaging, ensemble drama, which has many storie lines above and beyond the polygamy twist. That's just it - the polygamy is a twist in a family drama. It's actually a lot like Dynasty or Dallas without the big shoulder pads. There is a patriarch, an upstart, crazy parents & inlaws (more than average, of course!), crime, religion and sex. Lots of drama and comedy abounds.
But I hear that Ashton Kutcher has been toying with producing an OW/YM show.
The thing is, beyond the obvious boy-toy and sugar mamma jokes, how are our AGR relationships any different than same age relationships? Pretty boring, when you really think about it. Unless there is some twist above and beyond just an age gap to give it interest.
Polygamy, with it's completely foriegn (to most) family dynamics and slightly shady compounds and sexual curiosity, make for much more interesting tv viewing.
Maybe if the age gap involved a female superstar and her younger, unknown guy? I'd love to see a show about Cher and her bagel boy! LOL! Could you imagine being 20 years old and going from working in a bagel shop to living with 40 year old Cher?? Even Ashton & Demi would be an interesting story, because of the famous "tough guy" ex and a ready made family of girls.
But, my story would make for pretty boring tv. (Well, as it is NOW it would, LOL)
RobsGirl 08-17-2007, 02:05 PM I'm probably the only person here who doesn't think Big Love is well written. Its character development is poor, there's little broad scope - there can't be, the characters are polarized by their given environments and Bill Paxton spends way too much time looking overwrought with his circumstances, which kind of defeats the 'we're all one big happy family with benefits' scenario the production attempts to portray. That and Chloe Sevigny gives me hives, that chick can't act her way out of a paper bag...
Kristin 08-17-2007, 02:51 PM I guess I compare it to other offerings currently on tv. I suppose I'm not that picky - but it was still better than the age gap sitcom Fran had.
Lovaholic 08-17-2007, 04:09 PM Hey Harrison you can use my story. I actually think it has great potential with many spin offs.
Lets see.....
vym saves ow's life
vym friend of ow's daughter
vym graduates HS with OW's very GAY son
OW's very gay son dating OM
vym's mom dating OM his dad dates OW
OW's daughter is bi-casual
OW'S x husband is serial cheater & homophobe
OW belongs to prestigious Yacht club with many "important" people (all banging each other)
OW's best friend engaged to crack head
OW's other best friend just finds out her husband is gay
& he's now dating a gay OM
OW starting her own business with lots of stories & bodies (all types too;))
and then there's the AL connection....
kittylane 08-17-2007, 04:56 PM i would watch a show about different than the norm couples trying to cut it in the world, i think it could be a winner.
the world is not just black and white anymore. we all have our perspectives.

I'd watch it, but you'll need to add in the part when the OW comes to NYC to see YW JJ and gets wasted on Jager!!!! Now that is a TV show...LOL

JennyJen 08-17-2007, 07:17 PM So true Miss Jenny!
I don't lie chick, I just live the life of a good reality show!

Kristin,
I still haven't gotten around to seeing 'Big Love.' It just isn't that interesting or compelling, I guess. We have cable and I've come across it while channel-surfing. However, I trust others' judgment that it's a good show.
Was Fran's sitcome based on a OW married to a YM and raising kids together like I speculated about?
Polly 08-18-2007, 05:49 PM I've seen the previews for Big Love, but frankly, Polygamy just pisses me off! It's like giving a man a license to openly act like a pig! On one of those previews, one of the wives is plotting against the other two, so to me, it seems like this male pig has three women competing over him! Arrrggh! I don't like women with multiple men either. I don't think it's a good thing. Maybe I'm a bit Puritanical, but that's how I see it.
Agegap relationships just aren't that funny. They'd be good drama though (at least MINE turned out to be!) I had all the makings of a cheesy novel right here in my own home.
I would have watched a show about Cher and the Bagel Boy. Wouldn't that have made great reality t.v.? I wish they were still together. I thought they made a great couple.

Polyamorous relationships involve ALL people being OPEN, HONEST and RESPECTFUL of each other. There are many men AND women who thrive in these types of relationships. We don't need to get into it too much I guess, but please, don't assume that people who find that a different type of relationship makes them happy are "pigs". It's insulting, not only to the loving men, but also to the many WOMEN who are living happy, healthy lives in this type of relationship.
Feel free to call cheaters or liars "pigs" - or worse - but please, a little respect.....it seems clear you do not know much about polyamory and I don't think it is appropriate to make such harsh judgements about a topic if you don't understand it.
