Chatterbox 08-16-2007, 09:35 PM I saw him in May of 1977 (3 months before he died) in the Providence Civic Center. I had walked to the Center to buy tickets for another group and when I came out, it was raining. There were people hawking tickets for the matinee show for $25.00 (doesn't seem possible, but that's what I remember), so instead of walking in the rain, I said, "What the heck! Why not?" and bought a ticket.
I was WAAAAAAAAAAAAY far away so I couldn't "see" him, so I didn't know how overweight, bloated, etc., he was, but I could hear him and I could see his performance and I could see and hear the audience and he was absolutely amazing. Absolutely amazing.
A 6 foot 4 inch tough-guy acquaintance saw him that evening. He said, "Yeah, I bought the tickets for my girl's birthday. I didn't have ANY interest in seeing Elvis, but you know, to make her happy, I went. By the end of the show, I was pushing over gray-haired old ladies to catch one of the scarfs he threw after wiping the sweat off his face."
:D
He was really something. Anybody else have an Elvis memory?
jellybean400 08-16-2007, 09:59 PM That is a cool story, Chatter. No, i dont have any Elvis memories. But i liked your's :)
~Guinavere~ 08-16-2007, 10:30 PM My mother was a huge fan of Elvis (he is one year older than my mom), so as a little girl I remember going to the drive-in to watch his movies. I loved him too. Even as a little girl. My mother saw him in 1954 in a little place called Batesville, Arkansas. He was there to open a show at the county fair. She said she was screaming her head off even then.
The day he died I was at work and the news came on the radio I had playing in the office. I was so shocked and stunned and I cried. I couldn't believe he was gone at such a young age.
My friend just bought me the Life Magazine "Remembering Elvis 30 Years Later." Love it!
whiterose 08-16-2007, 11:02 PM I remember the day he died as if it were yesterday. While my mother was never a big Elvis fan (she much preferred Jerry Lee Lewis), Elvis was a huge part of my life while growing up. There was always an Elvis movie on tv some time or another. And of course, I watched his tv specials. But, I never fully appreciated his musical abilities until long after he had died. Over the years, I have grown to love some of his love songs. And, when my nephew died 2 years ago, Elvis' rendition of "Memories" was played at the service. I'll never be able to hear that song again without crying. :(
He had amazing talent and charisma. No wonder he is still well loved 30 years after his death.
kindanice 08-17-2007, 09:12 AM I saw him in concert. It was July 1975. My mother and a friend had tickets. At the last minute they decided to go some place other than the concert. So they gave the tickets to my cousin and I. They just dropped us off at the door of the auditorium down town. I was very young. SOOO young that I remember not being "into" Elvis that much. We just went more or less for something to do. :o Our seats were balcony to his left. We looked right down on him and had a great view. He had a lady with him that was very beautiful who sat at the side of the stage. I don't know who she was. I should research. I do remember that Elvis was physically very large at that time. And I remember thinking that he didn't look very healthy. He had diamonds on that I could see from where I was sitting. Also, I remember he called someone up and GAVE them a ring! It was a very BIG diamond ring.
I remember the day he died too. My mom was taking my brother and I to an amusement park out of town and it came on the radio. I remember we all cried.
PinkPanther_04 08-17-2007, 09:42 AM No Elvis memories for obvious reasons, but I came across this earlier and thought it was kind of cute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r4nOZVuULQ
jtsnmyhrt 08-17-2007, 10:07 AM I was never a fan of Elvis, although I grew up watching his movies. I remember the day he died, my family had just left Nashville TN and were on the way home. It was dark, and we were listening to the radio when they came on with "breaking news" of his death and they played his music all night long. It freaked my younger sister and I, because while in Nashville, we had seen one of his old cars and thought it was "cool". My older sister and uncle had seen him in concert, they are both HUGE Elvis fans. My uncle was to see him the day after he died.

whiterose 08-17-2007, 06:19 PM I forgot that I once spoke to a cousin of his over the phone. I worked in a call center and this person named Presley from Tupelo was calling. I jokingly asked, "So, are you related to Elvis?" She said, "Yeah, he was my cousin." :Thud:
