jesique 08-17-2007, 06:56 PM *sigh*
I'm freaking out. Hurricane Dean has now made me cry two days in a row and I'm guessing my emotions are only going to get worse.
I know the hurricane will be long gone by the time we're scheduled to fly out.....BUT they're saying it's going to wallop Jamaica as a Cat 4!!!
So plan B has been formulated. It sucks...and I hope like all get out that we don't have to use it...but here it is.
On Monday (after the hurricane is due to hit Jamaica) we will call our US contacts for the resort and see how bad the damage is.
Based on that....if we're unable to go...we're going to try to move all our vacation stuff to Feb. 2008. (we did get Trip insurance...thank goodness)
Then we'll get married here in Raleigh at the courthouse...and try and take a couple of days over on the coast. Like a mini-honeymoon.
Yall....please help me stay positive. I do really well until I hear on the news (and they're all talking about it of course) how bad it's going to be and see the news footage and then I just get all emotional.
I know if it's bad I'm going to just lose it. This feels to me like when I went to orientation at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. I registered for classes and everything. I was so excited to go there. Then I found out I got pretty much no financial aid and had to stay home and go to community college for the next two years.
I realize that in the grand scheme of things....this will be way worse for the inhabitants of Jamaica and everyone truely effected by this storm.
But I'm having a hard time getting out of the mememe thought. I've been counting down and looking forward to this vacation since April. I can tell you exactly how many more hours of work are left till we're scheduled to leave (30) and I've imagined how great it would be for so long...it's been my nightly thought to help me get to sleep.
This blows.
Nadine.
kindanice 08-17-2007, 07:35 PM Oh DEAR! Maybe it will just turn out fine. I sure hope so sweetie.

That's true. :D
The problem is I've been waiting for what feels like forever for a vacation! lol. I hate the thought of an even longer countdown. *sigh*
I'll deal either way. I'm just ready for the waiting to be over.
Nadine.
tinydancer 08-17-2007, 08:33 PM Awww Nadine,
I bet whatever happens...you'll be married, it will be great, and.......you get two honeymoons :D One on the coast right away and a bigger party in Feb!!!
Let us know how the resort came through the storm.
Blessings, TD
Belisama 08-17-2007, 09:05 PM Hang in there, Nadine! First of all, quick reality check: yes, Dean's been elevated to a Category 4 but remember that what you're reading in the papers/hearing on the news is going to be highly sensationalized! I used to work in the travel & leisure industry and one of our properties was located in Key West (lots of hurricanes down that way). Our clients would get so mad because we'd be given warnings to be cautious about bookings and they'd be yelling at us saying, "so what?? we're USED to that here!" The way I see it, hurricanes in those areas are like tornadoes here in Tornado Alley. Yes, they're to be respected and yes, they can do serious damage but *usually* that damage is pretty isolated, even if the big business/news machine would like very much for us to think otherwise!
That said, we'll keep our fingers crossed and watch the weather with you!
Sorry to hear this Nadine. My daughter just got back from Jamaica and had a wonderful time.
Living in Florida, and being used to hurricanes, I can tell you that anything can happen, but it's usually not as bad as they predict. A Cat 4 can turn into a Cat 2 or a Cat 5 at the drop of a hat, so let's hope for a downgrade. If so, it won't be too bad. Plus, they're used to hurricanes down there ALL THE TIME!
whiterose 08-17-2007, 09:49 PM I can understand how frustrated you must feel right now. :( Let's hope that it turns out to be less severe than anticipated. That does often seem to be the case.

Well then come to New England!! It's beautiful this time of year!!!! :D and you can have a little vaca hehe
Or have a little getaway near you.. Drive somewhere thats not to far and the two of you hibernate in a nice hotel somewhere and have a vaca :D I've done that when we can't go to far hehe
kittylane 08-18-2007, 09:39 AM Actually it is a blessing that we have the technology today so you know that your honeymoon may need to be changed, this is a very good thing because you would have been putting your life in severe and very real risk.
I lived threw a cat 1 possibly cat 2 hurricane two years ago, we were out of power for nearlly two weeks, like 90% of our supermarkets and gas stations were closed for nearly the full two weeks, some did not ever open due to the damage, friends of mine within a 7 - 10 mile radius were out of power over one month. I am a realtor, one of my listings was in a condominium of approx two hundred units, it was condemned and the people lived in the units with generators for upward to one year. This was in Coral Springs, if anyone knows where that is. Broward County for any of you guys that know the area.
Key West has been graced by God for some reason to not have a direct hit in our lifetimes. if a cat 1-2 hurricane has a direct hit, Key West with its frame houses will be history. A cat 3-4 will means many people will die.
If you are in the direct path of a hurricane as I have been and friends of mine have been, you get humbled quick.
It is not like a tornado, the area of a hurricane can be HUGE.
Have you forgotten what happend in New Orleans with a cat 4, this is very serious news.
Living in South Florida and knowing what a Cat 4 hurricane was and that it was heading for New Orleans upsets me knowing that the American Government did not send in military aid and put people on planes or trains, anything to get the people out and that is murderous in my opinion, even the news casters who were on the TV were so clueless. I was yelling at my TV for days, all of us were who understood what was about to happen.
I know this is a completely depressing post, I am sorry, I just think that we really do have to know that hurricanes are nothing to take lightly.
At the end of the day, you will be safe and able to live your life with your soulmate and that is what is really important.

I agree. Hurricanes change quickly, and also the weather reports are often very sensationalized, like someone else said.
I hope it turns out the best for you.
jesique 08-18-2007, 10:41 AM Thanks yall. I'm trying hard to stay Positive.
I know exactly what kind of damage a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane can do. All I can see currently in my mind is pictures from the aftermath of Katrina. :( Not exactly the pictures you want in your mind of your weddingmoon.
Not much to do but wait. And I never was good at waiting. I have no patience for it. Hence the countdown and how long and hard it's been to wait this long!
I'll live. It'll be sucky...but I'll live. I've gotten over huge disappointments before...and I know I will again.
Nadine.
Angel 08-18-2007, 04:33 PM Awwww Nadine. :bighug:
Stay positive like you're already doing. You've come up with Plan B and you can't control Mother Nature. She's a testy little thing and she's just jealous that you found the man of your dreams and she hasn't (which is really sad after all this time)!
I sent a request to "J.C." (the JC, the one all those WWJD bracelets are circling for, lol). He's like the MacDaddy of miracles. So I've requested one in this case. Though I'm not sure my influence is very high (I never returned his lawnmower and he's been a bit testy since then).
Okay my attempts at being the class clown aside...
I had completely forgotten how this would affect your trip. My heart goes out to you. It's okay to be bummed, but wait until Monday to feel anything.
Can you do a bunch of stuff this weekend so you won't think of it? Whatever you do, don't sit at the TV all day worrying. It will just upset you more because you can't control things right now. So get out and celebrate a bit this weekend and deal with whatever comes Monday.
Oh...if you like to drink...getting a bit basted will help. LOL.
:bighug: Nadine :bighug:
(My little hugs are all in time and look cool together, ha! ...it's the little things for me)
Belisama 08-18-2007, 06:45 PM Hey, Nadine. I don't know if this will help you or not but, in case you aren't already visiting this site, here's a link to the Jamaica Gleaner (Jamaica's Newspaper) that will most likely be your most accurate (non-sensationalized) source of hurricane-related news in the area:
http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com
You probably already have this link, too, but on the off chance that you haven't:
www.go-jamaica.com
We're watching and saying our prayers for you two!!
jesique 08-18-2007, 09:52 PM Thanks yall.
I've been putting in requests to the big man upstairs too Angel...although I'm not sure how much weight I have with him either....I think he's still ticked that I'm living in sin. :)
I have to laugh yall...I have to or I'll just cry some more.
Tonight my only prayers are for the people of Jamaica. This is going to be a million times worse for them than for me.
I feel so selfish thinking about how this is going to ruin my wedding...when this storm will ruin people's lives and homes and everything.
I am trying hard to keep my mind off it. Alec and I went to a reception for some friends of ours tonight but had to dodge out early cuz I couldn't stop crying...so we just went to dinner together...which was very much what I needed. Tomorrow I'll probably try to take in a movie with my friend and spend some "girl time" with her.
It's hard because I know exactly how devistating this storm is going to be and I have lost about 85% hope....but I talked to my mom this evening and she seemed un-fazed by it all...like it was no big deal and we were still good to go.
But anyways...please keep Jamaica in yalls prayers and thoughts. I know the island and it's people will be in mine.
MrsHedgeHog...thanks for those links...I'll definietly be using them!
Nadine.

Hang in there, Nadine!!
You gotta be tough... cool, calm and collected for something like this ya know?
I would try to find a beautiful wooded cabin site in the Smokey Mountains or something.... a nice country drive.... just the two of you and maybe a few friends.
Then save the huge blowout party for later. :D
Lovaholic 08-19-2007, 09:53 AM Nadine:
I was scheduled to go to Jamaica the week after 9/11. Everyone told us not to fly etc. but I figured it was probably safer than any other time. Get to the airport & they cancelled our flight because of a hurricane. It never hit!
Went back again in May & the weekend said there was a huge hurrican coming. Just a litle rain.
Went to Ocho Rios in November last year. It rained a few days & wasn't real hot, but Nick & I had the time of our lives!!!
So, with that said I hope it just blows over & you guys go & have a blast. And have a BBC drink for me they are delicious!
