I seem to NOT be able to post to the American Clothes thread.....so I will say my 2cents here.
I HATE being told NO when I'm NOT doing anything wrong, or hurtful.

I feel this way about my country......It is no different than apologizing if my child or animals do something to hurt someone........I apologize and try to be the best mother I can be. Teaching them right from wrong and HOW to behave in the world.

I doubt you specifically are being moderated TD, perhaps there is some glitch in the system.

I used to hate, hate, hate, hate ANY form of moderation...but, the reality is that places like this NEED moderation. You can go to other unmoderated sites and see how much "fun" they are. Typically they're not very classy places and sooner or later the very folks wanting "freedom" have lost a lot of it due to how limiting things can be when people lose control.

Having "freedom" doesn't mean that we should be irresponsible with it or use it to hurt others.

The moderators here are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They don't want to over moderate, but they also don't want things to get out of control (which has happened in the past)....then, once people have "freedom" and some are saying anything and everything, allowing their emotions to rule them - other people start complaining about how the site has taken an "ugly turn".

For the most part I think we can say pretty much anything we want here, it's HOW we say it that matters. Bullying and making fun of people who have a different opinion than you do is really not appropriate. However, people have managed to talk about very controversial topics with out having themselves moderated.

In the end, this is just a website, it's not that big of a deal. We should really be worried about the other forms of policing going on in our real lives - things which will have a much bigger impact on our realities.

And I agree, many people need to understand respect and until they do, freedom is not a possiblity here or in the real world.

I think that we pretty much know who stands for what.
Before I post I pretty much know who will disagree with me. If I post "Every woman should start a diet today", I know that Harrison will raise a ruckus.

Joke apart, I also think that it does not matter how polite you are in your posts, you will still say things that go against what most people think around here. So there will be disagreements.

If we do not want any debate or discussion, we will come to the point where we will not even be able to say "yukk" in a "Do you swallow?" thread.

I agree with you Amina, we should be respectful, but all seems to be relative. It is funny how we call it bullying or making fun of when the person under attack agrees with us and how we turn a blind eye if the person is one we disagree with. Very few people here are dead center, balanced and equitable(?).

So before I continue with this rant, I will echo Epo.

Happy happy, joy joy!!! :)

Thanks Amina.
Yes, we all do have our opinions don't we?
I know that I will stand up for mine as honestly but as respectfully as I can be.
Sometimes I do get upset though but, to me, it is more about "what can I say to educate, from my perspective, than bully. Bullying doesn't help anything..........people won't listen if they feel your ATTACKING their ideals.
I learned that over and over again in my past.
Blessings, TD

Okay, I really wanted to copy and paste Amina's entire post because she's spot on but these two paragraphs are really the crux of it all.

We HATE overmoderating but, if we aren't watchful things really do have a way of getting entirely out of control.

And yes, Amina is EXACTLY right about what you can say. I've talked to many members here both in PM and in IM in an attempt to clarify. You've ALL got a right to your opinions on any given subject (duh) and you even have a right to express your point of view on said subject (surprise!) but how you say it makes all the difference.

Example A: "I hate how you always say ABCDE because obviously that implies that you think 12345 which leads me to believe that you're the type of person who will ZYX789 like all the other sheep who are just like you."

Yeah. That's not going to fly. Never has never will. But y'all are smart and some of you have discovered more "creative" ways of expressing yourselves that may not technically cross the line but sure comes right up to it.

Example B: "My personal observation has been that ABCDE can tend to lead to things such as 12345. I am strongly opposed to this because the evidence I've seen supports conclusion ZYX789."

That one works.

C'mon guys, it's not rocket science. Whether overt or thinly veiled, if you can't keep the personal ugliness out of your post, it's going to be moderated.

TD, you were not singled out for moderation on any specific thread, I promise! If anything of that nature was going to be taking place, you'd be informed in PM.

Speaking of PMs, please feel free to send me a note if you have any questions or concerns. I should be here and/or available on yahoo much of the afternoon.

LOL, yup that is right.

Also note how we get people here with horrible spelling and grammar, but it is only when we are in a discussion, when we become the grammar and spelling police.

I thank all who are kind to me in this regards considering English is my second language, but when "your" is used instead of "you are", ahhh the temptation to correct the other person is overwhelming.

I have found mods to be very balanced. The few mods messages I have gotten tend more to do with links I have posted that break the rules.

Nadine.

I agree with you completely, Nadine.

The only difference I might see is the size of any particular site. Although, suprisingly enough, for as large as it is, Ageless has fewer active posters than one might expect.

In over four years of active membership here, I was never moderated. That included all the times when Captain1997 and I ran amok acting silly and irreverent (aaahh, the "good-old-days" :p ;) :D ). Although, there were plenty of times that Maria threatened to send us flying through cyberspace to Sexually Speaking. lol! I guess most people knew it was all in fun.

I don't agree with moderation (all the people here who've been mods for years are some of my dearest friends, and they've always known how I feel, in general, about moderation and banning) but I do respect the job they do, and I understand why it's done.

Joke apart, I also think that it does not matter how polite you are in your posts, you will still say things that go against what most people think around here. So there will be disagreements.
Most definitely. And there are people who seem to think that disagreeing with their opinion is tantamount to attacking them, or think that asserting something repeatedly in increasingly sarcastic tones equates to a discussion, or can't see the difference between emotional and rational arguments. Those are the people who usually cause problems, particularly in low-moderation environments.

I used to post on a board that was primarily populated by atheists, and most of the forums were geared toward serious discussion of moral, philosophical, theological, and political topics. It was very low-moderation, and the only time anything got out of hand was in the main political forum, in threads having to do with Israel and other contentious issues. And it's not as if everyone agreed with each other on other topics. Heck, they even argued about the validity of different varieties of atheism. It's just that most of the posters understood basic rules of debate and logic, and if someone started in with an ad hominem attack or some other logical fallacy, or was arguing from emotion rather than from reason, they'd get called on it and would usually back down and either excuse themselves or start arguing in a more reasonable manner. So I don't think anything more than tossing out obvious trolls is needed if the posters themselves are actually interested in having constructive discussions, don't mind people disagreeing with them, and have an aversion to emotional argument.

On this board I'm sometimes apprehensive about telling someone they're using a logical fallacy or something like that, because I expect either that poster or a mod to accuse me of attacking them on a personal level, when the truth is that you can't have a meaningful discussion if those sorts of things are allowed to stand. So I think, depending on the crowd you're dealing with, allowing posters to monitor themselves and each other can actually work better than a heavy-handed sort of moderation, which tends to stifle debate.

I have ALWAYS been a proponent of the moderating that has been done in this forum, [DELETE].

(On a funny note, it's one of my favorite things when a poster tells other people to get back to the topic but they don't mean the topic of the thread, they mean the topic THEY want to talk about! LOL )

I also have been a proponent of reporting posts that one feels is in violation of the rules, [DELETE]... BUT WAIT ... that's not a problem - that's the way the forum is set up ... BUT THEN they run BACK to the thread to continue getting their digs in!! I just wish we could call balony balony without people turning into whiney babies.

I wish we had a rule against being a jerk in addition to the rule against calling someone a jerk. And I wish there was a rule against being an insensitive idiot, in addition to the rule against telling someone they're an insensitive idiot.

I have ALWAYS been a proponent of the moderating that has been done in this forum, but now, it's turning into kindergarten and there's a lot of moderating about things for which there are no rules that seem to be completely arbitrary judgments by a moderator.

(On a funny note, it's one of my favorite things when a poster tells other people to get back to the topic but they don't mean the topic of the thread, they mean the topic THEY want to talk about! LOL )

Thanks for letting me know Kel
All in all, I know that I am a good girl and, other than some colorful language:eek: sometimes, I try to be a responsible adult:rolleyes::p
Moderation is a tough thing to do.....no doubt.
Even the word itself is hard for some to follow..ie, drink, smoke, etc.... in moderation.
I think it all boils down to a posters "intent" as to what is moderated but intent is a hard thing to try and get a handle on with some people.
I like this place b/c I DO feel very free to have an opinion and I know that I will not be personally attacked w/o someone standing beside me.
I left that other site b/c (and ABSOLUTELY no offense to my friends from over yonder) but it would get downright evil and hurtful with all the vomit that would come out of some posters mouth.
It became NO FUN to be there.
Plus, for ME, I didn't like that there weren't enough people in an OW/YM relationship....not enough balance.
The last straw for me was when I was hurting really badly and I started a thread and NOT one person responded to my pain at that time. It is very hard to not take that personally.
I wish there were no need for any laws but sadly, until ALL people can be respectful and share their views w/o going for the throat, in otherwords SELF MODERATE, there will always be a need for a "babysitter".
Oh, BTW........no moderator needed for the LOVELY CHATTER

Well, whether we agree with moderation or not, we have to have it. Another site spun off this site under that whole premise, grownups not needing moderation, and now that site also had moderation and bannnings. In fact, as far as my memory serves, every single site that has spun off this site (that are actual public sites) has moderation and bannings, even though the memberships are far less than the membership here.

As far as the membership numbers versus number of posting members, I don't really have the figures on that..however, some things I do know...we have about 300 different registered members visit the site every single day (not the same 300 registered members), and we still have about 25-30 new members who sign up every single day, so about 150 new members each and every week. These figures are only registered members, and I have no clue how many people read the site every day without being a registered member.

In other words, we have a lot of registered members who read every day and do not post, we have a lot of unregistered people who read the site and have no inclination to join, and we have a lot of new members who sign up to be a member after reading the site, but then who do not post.

I very much would like to change those statistics and see more people participate...
