Tyger74 03-06-2003, 04:22 PM I been on the computer for some time and I notice that when I play certain games, the pc tends to "lag". I been playing this online RPG game and sometimes I wonder if it is "their" server that causes lag or my pc. Does anyone know? Please post your pc questions here. Thanks
CaptainWankhard 03-06-2003, 04:29 PM It's probably server lag on thier side. I used to play Diablo and that shit was annoying as Hell. I added another stick of 128 Meg memory and it helped alot. What kind of comp do you have and what connection?
Tall Guy 03-06-2003, 04:59 PM If you notice that it lags the same when you are doing single player games, you can run a defrag. Unfortunately Ty, there are about a million recommendations to solve your problem. I know you have DSL, so it shouldn't be a problem on your end. What is your ping to the server in question usually. If it is sub-100ms then you should be just fine, if it is under 50 then you're rockin dude.
Is it a lag or is it a frame rate drop? If it is frame rates then you'd need a new video card. If you only have 128 mb of ram, then a ram upgrade could be suggested. I recently had a problem with my computer lagging, and reinstalling the network card drivers of all things seemed to help. You'll have to elaborate more on your problem and describe it a little better I think in order for us to provide you a more conclusive answer.
Anyone else have any questions?
Tyger74 03-06-2003, 05:04 PM Hey guys,
I like the ideas you posted on the possible problems. I been playing runescape for a bit over 6 months and what happens is when I go to SF server, during certain times I lose the connection when I am fighting monsters and then it reloads and the screen opens up to where I left off but I see alot of damage on my character. I might need to boost my memory card but somehow I think it is their server that has problems since runescape has been as popular like Everquest. Too many people going to SF server. I just reformatted my hard drive to get rid of excess junk.
Tall Guy 03-06-2003, 08:43 PM And, unfortunatly, there isn't much you can do to fix that to tell you the truth. You've got broadband, so you're doing the best you can. All I can say is just stay out of the SF server. If you can give me the name of the place, and the address I can go knock on their door and ask them why they won't let my main man, Tyger, play on their server!
Let me know, yo!
Steve
tyger, i am a computer gamer. i put together my computer so i'd have the specs i needed. it needed to be fast enough, i needed to max my ram, and i needed an excellent video card. my game is a heavy duty one, and it runs beautifully with no lag.

Tyger74 03-08-2003, 04:02 PM TG,
I am thinking about trading this pc I currently have to better one. I really like listening to streaming music like from moontaxi and even if the processor is not the fastest, at least the video card and memory will be good. Thanks y'all for the sound advice.
Tall Guy 03-09-2003, 12:53 AM Keep us posted as to what you plan on getting, perhaps some of us puter geeks can recommend a good solid computer for you, that you won't have any problems with. Keep us posted

Gypsyheart 03-09-2003, 02:25 AM I play Everquest on a cable modem and previous pc had major lag. Drove me nuts on raids when we had 40+ ppl in one spot with lots of stuff happening. I got new pc with more ram (256) and a high end graphics card. Made all the difference on the lag.
I believe the biggest factor is video card RAM. There was some tweaking in the INI file for Everquest to restrict the rate of transmission from the server that helped my old pc some. Don't know if your game might have similar settings you could adjust.
I say get another pc or if not, upgrade the video card to something with more video memory and made for high end graphics.
Good luck

yellowrose 03-09-2003, 07:24 AM Ty, how old is your computer? How many mg is your video card and RAM? How much space is left on your hard drive?
If it worked before but all of a sudden you are having problems, make sure you have plenty of space left on the hard drive. A lot of people do not realize that this is important too. Free up some space and see if this helps. Good luck!
rob-admin 03-09-2003, 07:33 AM Hi Folks,
I think I picked up one of those pain in the you know what scripts while surfing. Quite often, when looking for a page I simply type the dot com word into my address url eg: www.software.com. When there was no such site, I would simply get the MSN search page but now it brings me to a page with pop ups and so forth under www.xjupiter.com or something like that. Very annoying. Anyone know how to clear this out and go back to default type settings?
Thanks,
Rob
Bella 03-09-2003, 09:57 AM Actually I've had this happen a lot. go under tools, internet options, programs, reset web settings, and that should take care of it.
Also go online and find a program to clean up your spyware, like lavasoft's adaware, that'll clean it out of your registry too.
I hate those darn things.
rob-admin 03-09-2003, 10:51 AM Found it!
Good information. I found a file under my Program Files that was causing all of the problems. Incredible how they get away with this stuff.
