Science Goddess 10-30-2007, 11:15 PM About an hour ago, I felt what I almost thought was my imagination...what felt like a small earthquake. I spent most of my life in the Bay Area so like many natives or long-time residents of the Bay or other earthquake-prone parts of the state, I can feel an earthquake almost before it happens. And I can definitely feel the little ones.
Well, we don't have many earthquakes in these here parts of California, so I wasn't sure. EDIT: The only reason I felt it was because I was sitting here, reading. It felt so small, I thought that the cat rubbed against the leg of my desk.
But, sure enough...there was a 5.6 quake not far from my hometown at 8:04. That's pretty good size! My friend said that she's at her brother's house at the epicenter...the lamps were falling over, as was the china, and they all had to run outside!
5.6...everyone should be okay.
Anyone else feel it?
Only some of you native Californian will get this...but I'm actually bummed at missing out on being there. Yes, I experienced the 89 Loma Prieta quake first-hand so I know what a 'real' quake can do. But until that quake, most people that I grew up with could relate to how cool and wierd it was to wake up at, say, 3:00 in the morning, wondering why, and then feeling a small quake. It was hardly ever "Oh my God!" Rather, it was usually "Hey, cool!"
Starrypup 10-31-2007, 12:02 AM I went through Loma Prieta, but I was over 100 miles away in college. Sure our pool cracked and the whole thing washed into my apartment... There was some structural damage, but nothing major.
My SO, on the other hand, lives 3 miles from Loma Prieta. He was 6 at the time of the '89 quake:eek:, but he remembers it vividly. I've been through their family albums of the quake and the damage was impressive. How their house withstood is beyond me. It is something like 120+ years old, and didn't have a foundation at the time!
Anyway, I wasn't clear from your post if this 5.6 was on LP or somewhere else, so I'm gonna have to go look it up and call Chris if it was!
Edited to add: usually I am immune to earthquakes... what I mean is, everyone else is like, "Did you feel that?" and I'm like, "huh? I didn't feel anything..." so I always get excited when I feel them.
Strwbrries 10-31-2007, 12:18 AM Im in Tracy, Ca and we felt it. It was a shake nor a roll. I was surprised to feel it since Im told that we dont get earthquakes in the valley but being from San Jose I felt it right before it hit.
I was at work when it happened and both bosses on call this night are from the midwest, they were scared. lol they couldnt understand the happy happy joy joy atmosphere that we had going on.

I TRULY laughed out loud at the second part of your post! I remember back in the early 80s having a big ol' quake in San Jose...and a girl that had only been out from the midwest for, oh, less than a year, got so freaked out...she packed up and move back the following weekend.
See? Same thing, eh? You felt it before anyone else because your internal radar is tuned.
dmjoy 10-31-2007, 12:23 AM I was on the treadmill, so I didn't feel a thing. Like zoliepup I am usually the one who misses them, in the car, sleeping, on the treadmill etc.... When I do feel them I get hyper and excited, doesn't take much these days I guess
Hopefully there was not much damage and no one was hurt.
Starrypup 10-31-2007, 12:26 AM I can't get a hold of Chris. It seems his phone service is out... but it was on the Calaveras fault and centered in the Alum Rock neighborhood of San Jose.
That's good news for Chris and his family I think, and from what I can tell there is little damage other than a few broken glasses. No reports of injuries or fire. There is one broken water pipe in San Jose. I hope everyone is safe and sound!

Ah, sorry, I meant that I felt it at 8:04 tonight. It was centered in Alum Rock (San Jose).

LP was at 5:04 but it, too, was in October...this is earthquake season, for those that believe in that sort of thing.
I lived in the Santa Cruz Mtns during the 89 quake, not far from Loma Prieta. (Heh...wonder if I know your SO's family..?) I was...let me think...where are my toes...24 at the time. Pool was about 1/3 empty. Kitchen floor was just china and food and silverware. Cracked floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows. And so on.
Kinda took the edge off the thrill of earthquakes. When you finally experience one that can do some real damage, you tend to wonder if each one you feel is going to turn into another one of those.

It was sizable in 'feel' but not really that big a deal, it sounds like from exchanging TMs and emails with my friends. I can't get through to either of their cell phones and they can't call out to me.
Not a structural problem but rather the phone lines are flooded. Probably the same with Chris' phone.
Strwbrries 10-31-2007, 12:35 AM Yeah I was definately tuned. I stopped mid type and looked at my seat mate who is from the east coast and then it hit. lol. She was all what? then I called out EARTHQUAKE.
I grew up in the Alum Rock hills and all of my family is in San Jose. My mother hasnt called so she should be ok. I have to admit I was worried afterwards, I was sure it had to have been bigger since we felt it in the Valley, I thought for sure it would have been centered in Oakland or Frisco.
San Jose has been hit with some after shocks the strongest I think was a 2.1, should be interesting to talk to my sister when she comes down tomorrow. It was only a 5.6 that shouldnt even crack a wall.

How funny! If you grew up in and around Felton or the LG/Santa Cruz border, I bet you would know Chris or at least some of his friends. Did you go to LG high or to SC (or elsewhere)?
You and me, SG, parallel lives, I'm telling you! Bay to Tahoe... science chicks... snow lovers... you used to have the young guy thing going... Long lost sisters maybe?!
Alawiy 10-31-2007, 12:43 AM I was lounging on the bed and my daughter said "earthquake!"
I barely noticed it at first. But it kept rolling for a LONG time. First time having an earthquake in this place we moved into in August, so I don't know how it really compares, but I thought it was a weird feeling quake. For the first time I was just enjoying it! ha!
I wondered if it scared my husband. He's from Egypt. But he was on the phone and just continued to talk although he smiled and nodded. After he got off the phone he started talking about earthquakes he's been in. I guess that they have them pretty regularly in his part of the world. He said even if there's a quake over in Greece or somewhere on that side of the Mediterranean, they can be felt in Egypt.
Normally, I can tell when a California earthquake is coming. I could have told you if I was paying attention, but this time I wasn't. A california quake makes my stomach bloat up and get hard like I'm carrying a big rock in my gut. Hurts, too. It will do that a couple days before the quake and then go away the day after. Well, it did this, but I didn't pay attention to it this time.
Edited to add: Was in the 89 Loma Prieta quake - up on the 19th floor of a building. Thought we were all gonna die. Now THAT terrified me. I remember even thinking at the time, "Now I truly know the meaning of the word 'terror'!"
If there's going to be a quake over in the Indonesia area of the Pacific, I'll get a certain kind of headache. It's like a...hmm... like my head is full of water and it bangs and throbs so hard that it cuts off my hearing. Didn't realize this was a signal until the earthquake before the tsunami. Man that one (that headache) made me think I was having a stroke and gonna die. I had to lie face down on the bed for a while. Since then, every time I get a similar type of headache, I go run to check the geological sites and sure enough!
My son slept right through tonight's quake... and most others.
I hope there wasn't any major damage anywhere. I guessed the quake to be a 4.0. It didn't seem strong enough to be anything else, but I guess it was far enough away that it was just a long rumbly roll by the time it got here (San Francisco). Felt kind of good. Reminds me of the California dairy commercials where the cows are standing there when the earth quakes and when it's over they say something like "aaaahh... those foot massages are never long enough!"

Umm, I grew up in Los Gatos and lived there most of my life. My sister lives in Felton. My mom, Boulder Creek. I went to LGHS, briefly. Was just down in SC and Monterey last month.
You need to PM me or tell me here what you do for a living...are you in the environmental field?
TOO weird...

LMFFAO!! :happy0188: Exxx-actly!
Interesting...all of those symptoms you mention. I've been feeling weird...kinda toxic...for the last few days, and have had a terrible headache for the last three days.
