larasteele 11-19-2007, 01:14 AM Okay, for fun, let’s play "5 things."
You ask a question, and people have to list their top five answers to that question. Your answers can be as outrageous as you want--for example, if asked what five cars you want to own in your life, don't think about what you can afford NOW, just shoot for the moon!
Here, we can let a question sit for a day or two, so people can add their answer, then add a new 5 things question.
I'll begin: I’ve been watching the Discovery channel all day, so travel is on my mind. What five places would you love to visit in your lifetime?
larasteele 11-19-2007, 01:15 AM The top five places I want to visit in my lifetime:
1.) Antarctica (penguins, auroras, and a zillion stars you can’t see in the city.)
2.) Ireland (a whole lot of culture and places I’d love to see there)
3.) France, especially Paris. (Too many reasons to list!)
4.) India (a culinary and cultural wonderland)
5.) a very small, uninhabited island in the Caribbean (solitude, sun, sand, and peace!)
Harrison 11-19-2007, 01:37 AM Top five places I want to visit:
1) Norway!! I want to hang out with Haraio and Aina and admire all the fine-***, flaxen-haired, Viking BBWs that roam that beautiful country.
2) South Africa - Lions & impala... and Crocodile-hunting...crocodile burgers... crocodile gumbo... crocodile hush puppies... MMMM. :p
3) Jamaica - wanna hang out with Goodchild and listen to Jamaican women talk in that cute, sexy accent. *swoon* They are soooo charming....
4) United Kingdom - haven't visited Manchester yet
5) Holland - Dutch people are sooooooo cool. LOL! What a happening country!
joelstrouble 11-19-2007, 02:32 AM Harrison, you would be more than welcome to come visit! :p
Top five places I want to visit:
1. India!
I want to ride this train!!! :D
http://www.jeffiscool.com/pictures/IndiaTrain.jpg
2. South Africa... for the same reasons as Harrison :p
3. Egypt, to see the pyramids and Amina :p
4. Rome, Italy
5. Holland... No, I'm not copying you Harrison ;)
I have been to Amsterdam once, but I didn't get to see much of it because we only spendt one night on a hotel just outside the airport so we didn't get to see the town. Rason we stayed there for one night was because of a screw up from the airline, we were comming from Morocco and the had forgot to put us on the passager list from Amsterdam to Oslo, so we had to wait for a plane the next day... It was all good though 'cause we got to go to a grat hotel for a night and have a great dinner and a nice breakfast for free :D
But i kinda feel cheated out of seeing Amsterdam.
The is one more reason for wanting to go to Holland and that is that Joel is 100% dutch... :p
whiterose 11-19-2007, 06:12 AM 1. Ireland

Egypt
Israel
Italy
Iceland
China
It was extremely difficult to pick only 5 places I want to see. I have at least 10-20 more countries for the same reasons I'd love to see (Ireland, France, Spain, England, Japan, India for example), and none of those places rank any lower to me.

Ah, you have discovered the challenge of the "5 things" game....choice and prioritizing! I know I would love to visit many more places than the five I listed, but I had to pick my top five! :)
LENAE 11-19-2007, 04:53 PM These are soo fun!!! :D

PinkPanther_04 11-20-2007, 09:05 AM Okay, I've got a new question.
What are your top 5 favorite bands or musical artists? If you have a particular favorite album or song from any of them, go ahead and list that too.
1. Paul Simon (Graceland)
2. Creedence Clearwater Revival (Willy and the Poor Boys)
3. U2 (The Joshua Tree)
4. Stevie Ray Vaughan (Texas Flood)
5. Tom Petty (Full Moon Fever)
I'm kind of curious whether these will go roughly along generational lines. I know mine don't really fit in that sense, in that all the albums I listed came out before I was 10.
scott2075 11-20-2007, 06:31 PM 1. Type O Negative
2. Kamelot
3. In Flames
4. Chicago
5. A Perfect Circle

What are your top 5 favorite bands or musical artists? If you have a particular favorite album or song from any of them, go ahead and list that too.
EEK! A tough one!
Here goes:
1.) U2
2.) The White Stripes
3.) The Beatles
4.) Tori Amos
5.) Matchbox 20
Tricky, tricky: I could add about 20 more to this list!
Good question, PinkPanther!
Angel 11-20-2007, 08:49 PM 1. Tori Amos. The entire Little Earthquakes album as it was the first music to give my inner turmoil a voice, just replace God with parents. I particularly like the song Crucify (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jftFhb0xnU). To this day she is my all-time favorite.
2. The Ramones. Weird; rebellious; love them! Poison Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUwDX84JDbg) or I Wanna be Sedated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMD7Ezp3gWc)
3. NiN. I love this video The Perfect Drug (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0s5UOVsMDg), but my favorite song by NiN is The Hand That Feeds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk7SKP4PJ2w)
4. Linkin Park. Love them! My marriage...Numb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXYiU_JCYtU)
5. Chingon. My fiance listens to a lot of traditional Mexican music like this: Banda Machos - La Suegra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpkqA0EBVEQ). So it was nice to find this group for us both to enjoy since I'm not a big fan of the traditional style. Though I won't deny it's quite humorous to see the entire lawn crew (who are Mexican) sitting in front of my window eating their lunch and jamming to what sounds like a Mariachi Band invaded my house. Anyway, I get the privilege of having my fiance sing this updated version of his favorite song in my ear. This band are a few members who are also in another great band called Del Castillo. The song is Malaguena Salerosa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyp8Us-ixkk&feature=related) and given the above info there is no way it doesn't make my top 5!
larasteele 11-20-2007, 09:13 PM 1. Tori Amos. The entire Little Earthquakes album as it was the first music to give my inner turmoil a voice. Replace God with parents and you understand me. Particularly the song Crucify (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jftFhb0xnU). To this day she is my all-time favorite.
OMG, Angel, you rock! I love that song. Just yesterday, I put it on a mix CD for one of my kiddos. I told her what the song had meant to me and she listened to it; she said she could use the song when she was angry. (Which, given the kiddos I work with, is a LOT!)
I actually put a LOT of Tori on that CD...it was a female-power mix. We also giggled over the "Happy Phantom" and decided we too, would run naked through the streets without our masks on if we died today. :)
Glad to find another Tori fan!
~Guinavere~ 11-20-2007, 09:29 PM Ok...hmmmm
In no particular order:
Pink Floyd

Rock N Roll
Country
Jazz

Aw, thank ya! And awesome! It is great to find another Tori fan! Little Earthquakes is a great album for internal turmoil I think (well all of them rock, but that one in particular). Love the Happy Phantom story. :)
I always called her music style "happy confusion". It has always felt like the grounding wire to my crazy thoughts. Made it safe to have them if that makes any sense.
Love finding another fan as well!
jesique 11-21-2007, 09:45 PM Mmmmm...thats a good one...In no particular order...

larasteele 12-08-2007, 12:38 AM This thread is languishing, so, new topic.
The five best STORIES you have ever read (no specific category--all open.)
1.) The Sandman graphic novel series by Neil Gaiman. (This is cheating a bit, because it is a collection of stories---however, it counts, as the stories are inside other stories. If you have always thought of comic books as low-brow, check this out. It is amazing, intelligent, creative, and Endlessly Delightful.)
2.) Dune by Frank Herbert (I'd love to cheat again and say the whole Dune series and Dune universe, but this book will do, as it opens a whole new--well, universe, to everyone who reads it.)
3.) Lord of the Rings: Return of the King by JRR Tolkien
4.) The Dark Tower by Stephen King (Last book of Gunslinger series)
5.) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling
(Anyone see a pattern? I love stories that continue; as well as stories that open up a whole new world. Each of these books expanded my ideas of what the world, the universe, and life can contain. These stories stay with me, and make me think, dream, and hope: what if....)
Your turn!
Lily42 12-08-2007, 12:14 PM My five favorite stories
1) The Incredible Journey
2) Celestine Prophecy
3) The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
4) Purpose Driven Life - not really a story but a great book
5) The Bible--- for me continues to be a timeless incredible story of life, death, lust, sin and life in general; sprinkled with grace and love & an amazing ending
I could go on and on though I love booiks I could have bene a librarian, I would be happy to read everything in the world... I like serious deep stuff, stuff that makes you think, and stuff that is just a fantasy or an escape to a different zone.. I loved harry potter as well for that aspect, and hate to see the end of it.. Also like westerns as they send you away to another time and place... It was tough to just pick five --- Another one I really liked was called Instructions to the Cook- A zen masters take on living a life that matters.. Found that very illuminating.
ahh maybe I will just read today... it is twenty below wind chill here today brrr...

I read the bible often too, Lily.
PinkPanther_04 01-04-2008, 09:32 PM What are your five favorite websites? Besides this one, of course.
1. Boing Boing (http://boingboing.net/): A directory of wonderful things
A blog about nearly everything. It focuses on art and innovation, DIY stuff, copyright issues, and privacy, but also covers science, technology, politics, civil liberties, and all sorts of weird, wild stuff.
2. Pharyngula (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/): Evolution, development, and random biological ejaculations from a godless liberal
The subtitle pretty well says it. PZ rules.
3. Pandora (http://www.pandora.com/corporate/): radio from the Music Genome Project
A sort of internet radio station where you create your own stations around artists or albums you like and it plays other songs that sound like that artist. You further tweak the playlist by voting on the songs it plays. It's a great way to discover new artists you may never hear otherwise.
4. My Yahoo (http://my.yahoo.com/)
My homepage, which has one of my email accounts, weather, yellow pages, news (mostly science news from the wire services), and other assorted stuff all together. I'm probably going to switch to iGoogle (http://www.google.com/ig?tab=mw&hl=en) as soon as I get used to it though, since I use a fair number of their products.
5. Daily Kos (http://www.dailykos.com/): State of the nation
I read Think Progress (http://thinkprogress.org/) and Crooks and Liars (http://www.crooksandliars.com/) regularly as well, but I like dKos best. I used to have a problem with its format (just seemed too busy visually for me to read it much), but I seem to have gotten over that.
zoliepup 01-04-2008, 09:45 PM Hmm...
Can't do songs, it's too limiting. How about if I do favorite artists/albums of 2007.
Cloud Cult: The meaning of 8
Midlake: Van Occupanther
Spoon: GaGaGaGaGa
Band of Horses: Ceased to begin
New Pornographers: Twin Cinema
Points to anyone who is familiar with my favorite bands ;)
