One of a Kind 11-25-2007, 09:37 AM My game is Texas Hold'em poker.....I play in pubs, for points. No money involved.
I have had an excellent Fall season, and am quite proud of myself.
Currently, I am first and 2nd at the 2 places I play at (that could change in a heartbeat). I am ranked 3rd regionally(if I stay in the top 10 til the end of the season, I receive an invite to the Tournament of Champions in vegas!), and 43rd nationally. That is pretty exciting for me.....the best part are the "props" I am getting from all of the guys (still mostly a man's game). I am having fun, being aggressive when I need to be...and the best part-I have taken over running the game at my fave pub! The owner and I are going to have a meeting, and plan some exciting things for next season, which will bring in more players, and increase their profits.
I have made so many friends playing. Good people, whom I know have my back. keeps me occupied.
Just thought I would toot my own horn....

Rozie 12-01-2007, 02:08 AM This is the first time I've seen this post. Funny how some posts just kind of get buried. My BF made me watch Silent Hill the movie when he came up around Halloween. It was great; so artsy! I find it sort of comical that a first rate movie is based on a video game. He says I need to play it...says its really scarier as a game.
cuteguy37048 12-01-2007, 02:19 AM I play Texas Hold'em alot.
I like to play by percentages. I can generally tell what's in a person's hand by seeing my cards and what hit the flop. Sometimes I don't even need the Flop though.
I base my percentages on an MIT type of system.
I'm not a pro though. I also never play for money. I have my own set of clay chips though. I also have a portable poker kit I can carry with me.
last1standing 12-01-2007, 09:22 AM I play on PokerStars; mostly $20 and $50 multi-table SnGs. I'll occasionally play a MTT on the weekends when I have the time, but that's rare. I've had a good (for me, anyway) year; I'm up about $9K for the year so far. My oldest son Steve (who got me started) is the "shark" of the family though; he has a calculator in his head...figures odds and mathematical probabilities instantly. Its a rare weekend that he doesn't take down between $1-5K.

Is this real life money?
marcy 12-01-2007, 12:01 PM Now Dev and I play poker irl with another couple a few times a month. It is fun although usually someone is pissed off during the evening (okay usually one of the wives... we're bitter and we like to win LOL).

IDK
But it can be. I know a pro, he's a friend of mine and he does tournaments. I'm self taught though.

In this case, yes...although most sites have "play money" games as well. Obviously, the intent here is to foster interest in the game and give "newbies" a place to develop their skills a bit. The problem though, is that the quality of play in these "pretend" games tends to be very wild/weak/loose. There is a LOT more to good poker than just "catching" good cards. Anyone (almost) can win when the deck is "slapping them in the face", but playing profitably on those nights when it seems you're being dealt "trash" nine out of every ten hands is very much a skill.
Rozie 12-01-2007, 03:19 PM OMG! I'm playing the wrong games. Because of real money traders in these fantasy games, the economy is all goofed up and I am a pauper in my games. I should be playing poker for real dough!!
cuteguy37048 12-01-2007, 04:25 PM Ok, Start with Blackjack. Learn about the MIT Blackjack team. Then move to Texas Holdem.
For hold'em, there are books by professionals. Dig into guys like Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, and other professionals.
Read up on the late great Stu Unger. Learn from his mistakes and his genius. He never had a book I think but he was the best there ever was in Texas Hold'em.
There are videos by proffessionals as well. Howard Lederer has one. He taught his sister to play as well and now she's the top ranked female professional who won the World Series of Poker in the 5 card Stud category (I think it was stud, she won two events that year outside of Texas Hold'em).

Agreed. You might also want to add Daniel Negreanu's name to the list. His mental approach to the game is - at once - both lethally effective and unquestionably honorable.

I'd like the add the following:
Position
Passive
Aggressive
Loose
Tight
Bluff
The Nuts
And these last two; you absolutely MUST have a firm grasp of in order to be a successful hold'em player.
Pot odds
Implied odds
cuteguy37048 12-01-2007, 05:14 PM lol The Nuts lol
