Genocide..
They said it could never happen again... But it is happening. Armed conflict in Darfur, Sudan has left over 450,00 dead, forced more than 2.5 million people from their homes and placed millions of people - in Darfur and the neighboring countries of Chad and Central African Republic - at risk of starvation, disease and further attacks.
United Nations officials have called this the world's worst humanitarian disaster today.
gen·o·cide [jen-uh-sahyd]:
–noun the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group.
Men, women, and children are being murdered by their own government paid militia. Since the beginning of the genocide, 450,000 people have died.
Not only murdered but:
-raped
-slaughtered
-displaced
-suffered from malnutrition
The militia, otherwise known as the Janjaweed, are killing animals as well and throwing them into any and all water supplise, along with, burning all food supplise and housing the people own -- consequently creating malnutrition for all, especially the hungry children.
Background: Nearly three years into the crisis, the western Sudanese region of Darfur is acknowledged to be a humanitarian and human rights tragedy of the first order. The humanitarian, security and political situation continue to deteriorate: atrocities continue, people are still dying in large numbers of malnutrition and disease, and a new famine is feared. According to reports by the World Food Program, the United Nations and the Coalition for International Justice, 3.5 million people are now hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced due to violence, and 450,000 people have died in Darfur thus far. The international community is failing to protect civilians or to influence the Sudanese government to do so.
There is so much you can do to help! From spreading the word about this conflict to researching.
There are shirts for sale ! Wearing a shirt will raise a great deal of awareness! Wearing the shirt will create tons of questions from friends and allow you to spread the word. The lack of education on this genocide is incredible. Most people, when asked about Darfur, answer with "What's Darfur?" http://www.savedarfur.org
Won't you join in saving lives?
