Online/game time vs. irl time

An interesting concept that I have noticed is the difference in how time seems to pass online/game vs irl. It has always felt to me that there is some crosswalk of time between the two. In otherwords, knowing someone intimately in online/game time for say four months or so... seems to translate into a lot longer rl time.

Has anyone else felt or noticed that time feel difference?

Oh, I definitely think there is some sort of time warp bewteen RL and online life. Only I'm not sure from the way you posted, how you see it, Marcy.

I think online just takes so much longer that its easy to invest hours and hours of RL time without realizing it, when in fact, what you've said/accomplished in a day online compared to what you could have accomplished in RL in the same time frame is miniscule. That's one of the reasons I question those who say they've known their SO for months in a game and are ready, sight unseen to marry them. You just couldn't, given the time constraints in a game, know someone well enough to plan a life with them, even if you communicated 24/7 in game chat. One hour of online chat is like 10 minutes of RL conversation.

Now, there is a weird intimacy to online chat that seems very different than, say, talking on the phone. I think it is the fantasy that you bring to your online relationships that accounts for this. So there is this illusion that you know the person you are talking to, but really, your cyber personality knows their cyber personality. I think that fantasy heightens the feeling of having a longer, more significant relationship than maybe one really has.

I have spent WAY too much time thinking about this, but you have to understand how amazing this is to me! I harken from the days when Cpt. Kirk and Lt. Ohura played in the holodeck...never dreamed anything remotely similar could exist. I have to get a copy of the episode where he fell in love with the beautiful young woman who in the end turned out to be an elderly, broken survivor of a ship wreck. A classic AG/cyber love story!!

Yes, as my ex-gf has said "We know so much about each other it's like we are family"

It's only been a little over a year. I love still being a part of her life. :)
