RobsGirl 12-09-2007, 12:48 PM Yesterday we spent quality time wrapping up baby clothing and blankets to be delivered to our project mommies to be, then we took the kids to pick up a few items for toys for tots - I'm a firm believer in giving all the year around, not just the holidays. Later in the day we had dinner with some friends, one who is a counselor for VOA, we spent quality time talking about community action and donation requests that come out of the blue. People would not believe what some folks ask for - he gave me the link to the following article. Ya'll HAVE to see this, it really one takes the cake...

christina923 12-09-2007, 12:54 PM if anyone gave.
*sigh*
and i'm sure some did
RobsGirl 12-09-2007, 12:58 PM Seriously, I was floored - that somebody would have that much GALL to make a public request like that. I thought surely it had to have been somekind of joke - until we called a friend in Brooklyn this morning and she said she'd seen the ad with her own eyes.
grumpysgirl 12-09-2007, 01:02 PM Well crap if its THAT easy...dang I swear some people! How will they continue paying for it ya know what I mean?? You can't have champagne on a beer budget..if they can afford the 600k to 700 k stop blowing it on other crap and save up like the rest of us LOL
I vote for santa to give them a swift kick in the behind!!
LadyInWaiting 12-09-2007, 01:06 PM sheesh  At least they spent the money to place an ad. Usually they just post on craigslist, but I guess they figured anybody that could toss that kind of cash around probably doesn't read craigslist.
scott2075 12-09-2007, 09:10 PM This is nothing but greed and vanity. It makes my stomach turn......
TheMercenary 12-09-2007, 09:34 PM I will not discount it as a greed. They are simply doing everything they can to save their nest. It just happens that it would cost million dollars to save this nest.
RobsGirl 12-09-2007, 09:50 PM These people make seven hundred grand a year, they can afford a half way decent apartment in NYC without having to shell out a million...this is greed and keeping up with the Jones squared, imo.
Lovaholic 12-10-2007, 07:51 AM I wasn't sure where you were going with the post, but it reminded me of a situation several years ago.
My older children were preschoolers & we had decided to help a "needy" family. It was exciting & I felt my children were learning a great lesson that they could continue every Christmas.
We were given a "family" and their wish list. It consisted of 2 adults & 2 children. They were asking for sweatshirts, cd's, makeup & school supplies. Well, I went a little overboard, but I couldn't help how great it felt to give. At the time we were a family of 6 living in a 2 bedroom home, my car was on it's last legs, I was barely working & my husband was never around. Nonetheless I was thrilled to donate.
We were told to deliver the gifts at the family's home.
:eek:I almost died when I pulled in. It was in a neighborhood of mostly rentals less than a mile from the ocean. A new Escalade was parked in the driveway and when we went in the house I was shocked to see a big screen tv, massive stereo system and game systems. I was so angry!!!
Here I was trying to feel good & I felt "taken". Damn I had been married for almost 10 years & we still had not bought a new tv or furniture (all hand me downs) and my car was 15 years old & purchased used!!!
It was so sad & I felt this family was being greedy. Yes, they may have had financial difficulties, but "duh" no wonder look where their priorities were?!!!
My children couldn't understand why we were "giving" to a family who appeared to have more than us. It was a perfect time to discuss material wealth.
Now I know that's a "negative" story and my resolution is to be AL positive...
So,,,
My children would often ask if we were rich. I would say yes; very rich, but not the way you think.
WE ARE RICH WITH LOVE!!! And that is what I preach to my kids & my family..
And now to you my ageless friends....money means NOTHING without love!!
We are all so blessed & rich to have love in our lives.
Now you know why my name is Lovaholic:yes:
Bodhi Tree 12-10-2007, 08:27 AM LOOOOOOOL, that's awful !!!!
I have a friend like that. He moved here at the same time as I. We met in LA 25 years ago, so oooold friend.
Last year he kept crying that he is broke, sooooooo broke and desperate.
So, we went out one evening and I paid for his ticket to see a photo exhibition, then took him out to dinner, even gave him metro tickets. Then all of a sudden I thought "wait a second !!!!! this guy OWNS a 150 sq m flat in the heart of Paris that he entirely redecorated recently, he OWNS a huuuuuuuge house in the countryside that he also had renovated by an architect, he OWNS a car and a motorcycle, and I EARN LESS THAN MY FREAKING RENT ":eek::eek:
I think poverty is very relative. To some being poor means not knowing how to pay grocery bills and feed the kids, and to others it means going on vacation and staying at a 5 star hotel only twice a year instead of 4.
Hey, it's all relative. If you're income to debt ratio is in the red, you're poor whether you make 20K/yr or 200K/yr.
These peeps wanna stay in their hood, and can't afford to do so. Yeah, they could move to Queens, the Bronx, or even Brooklyn, but it ain't the UWS. If I got sqeezed out of my hood due to finances, I'd be hard pressed to figure out another place to live that would make me happy.
Hey, it's better than the investing in the sex trade industry!!

Hey, they're just askin' - I mean, they aren't threatening to kill a kid a day until they get their million. If people want to give them money - that's their choice! There are untold numbers of people that spend thousands of dollars (millions?) to cover the cost of fund-raising functions - I say, let them give the money directly to the "needy"! :p
With the money they have to get a house already (6-700k) we could sell this place, buy 2 new houses in a NICE area in Philly and rent one of them out!
They should just accept that they have to deal with a lack of choices like most people do from day to day. :(
Lily42 12-10-2007, 11:41 AM Makes me very sad, when I do not even have the money for groceries,am feeling guilty because I would like a bag of apples so I can eat them at work but figure the kids need to have juice instead--and barely enough for gas this week.. Some people have no clue what broke is...
Just selfishness, or no clue about what their priorities should be in life..
Happiness not dependent on money...or stuff... Thanks be to God..
