Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 05:16 PM So, what's your favorite? Maybe a "top five in no particular order"? And, most importantly, why are they in your list?
This was brought up early Saturday morning as my Canuck and I were driving into Vancouver. He said, and I quote this verbatim, "there's no city in the world more beautiful".
Yes, it's in my top 10, but not at the top of my list. My "number one", without a doubt, is New York City. By far, the best and worst place I've ever been in. But, as time goes by since I've lived there, the "good stuff" wins out. (And, yes, I'm just dying for a New York bagel right now. *lol*)
Especially at this time of year, New York is, IMO, the best place on earth. Museums, parks, the decorations, and the odd hot dog. I've never been in any place like it.
So, what's your favorite?
PinkCat 12-10-2007, 05:22 PM Hmm...Vancouver, London, Montreal, San Francisco, NYC. I also really like Rome and Paris.
LADave 12-10-2007, 05:35 PM Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, Munich, London
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 05:35 PM Hmm...Vancouver, London, Montreal, San Francisco, NYC. I also really like Rome and Paris.
I've never been to London, sadly. :( I spent a year living in Madrid, and never made it that far north.
Speaking of, Madrid is one of my favorites as well. I've never spent an extended period of time in a city with a more friendly population.
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 05:37 PM Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, Munich, London
LA?? Care to elaborate on that one? (I mean, aside from pointing to your username? LOL)
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 05:42 PM Gosh....I have a few...as always, depends on my mood lol.
NYC, that's home to me....um, love Seattle, LOVE New Orleans, just not during Mardi Gras.
Montreal, Cairo, Zurich.....man....too many to think of right now.
Blessings, TD
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 05:44 PM LOVE New Orleans, just not during Mardi Gras.
Oh, I miss NO, even during Mardi Gras. Though, trying to sleep while living in an apartment on the parade route come Mardi Gras day is something that I wouldn't want to try again anytime soon. ;)
PinkCat 12-10-2007, 05:47 PM OH, I forgot Seattle -- I LOVE Seattle.

I love Seattle!
I just moved here in August. It's growing on me. ;)
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 06:19 PM Mishigas,.....I usually go in the summer when it is as hot as hell but just enough people to keep it interesting but I still have the St Pierre Hotel on Burgundy st. all to myself!!!
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 06:36 PM Mishigas,.....I usually go in the summer when it is as hot as hell but just enough people to keep it interesting but I still have the St Pierre Hotel on Burgundy st. all to myself!!!
LOL, TD...that reminds me of when I first moved there, back in the summer of 1998. I flew down in July, took possession of the apartment, and had a grand old time exploring the city. At the beginning of August, I flew back up to NY to drive my car down and I couldn't believe how the city had changed! Where it was hot when I had been there initially...it was just downright intolerable when I got back down there.
I drove down with a friend of mine, and we went to the Quarter one night. We had a few drinks on the balcony of one of the bars there, and, in the hour or two we were there, I maybe counted 20 people that walked by on Bourbon Street.
I moved from there in 2001. My main reason for it was the intolerable summers. Good for getting excellent rates in hotels, horrible for actually walking around. :D

BellaLove 12-10-2007, 07:18 PM Venice, Italia - the one place where you can take a photo anywhere and it will look like a postcard.
Paris, France - Amazing....straight out of a movie...awesome cheese
San Francisco, CA - Always a good time.....lots of culture....adventure!
Big Sur, CA - Relaxing, nature everywhere you look
Seattle, WA - well I've never been...but I KNOW when I do I will fall in love!!
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 07:28 PM Oh geeze....how could I forget Venice...........amazing place!!!!
Lol Mishagas....I grew up between Phx AZ and NYC.....I can handle it.
I just have to run back to the hotel and jump into my little courtyard pool and head back out again.
I love to wander and when my mind is engaged, I don't feel the heat.....hotflashes not included:eek:
JennyJen 12-10-2007, 07:30 PM New York...why cause it's my home and the ONLY place I've ever lived and one of the most amazing and greatest places in the world!!!
PinkPanther_04 12-10-2007, 07:57 PM I'm not the biggest fan of cities, but I like a few:
Kapaa (Kauai) is a lovely town with terribly friendly people in a beautiful place.
Key West is a very free, nonjudgmental place and has a really high fun-stuff-to-area ratio.
New York City also has a lot of good stuff packed in a relatively small area.
Albuquerque is beautiful and has incredible food - one of the few places I've visited that I'd really want to live in.
New Orleans, or at least the French Quarter, is like Key West with better food but no snorkeling.
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 08:04 PM Damn, missed Key West too.....I love it there!
Oh and speaking of "second cities".....Sedona, AZ, San Antonio TX, a few towns in NM, Boulder CO.
Gosh, wish sometimes I was back on the road!
But, there's no place like home
zoliepup 12-10-2007, 08:25 PM I don't really love cities... but to visit, there's none better than Seattle! To live here, well, that can be a different story!
Munich... I never had as much fun as my wild week in Munich. That's a great city.
I love Paris. I know most people don't, but I do!
But the best "city" in the world. It's gotta be Truckee, cuz that's home for me. (No smarty comments from the Mishigas gallery ;))!
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 08:29 PM Truckee????
Where the hell is that.....must have missed it in my travels LOL
zoliepup 12-10-2007, 08:31 PM Why, it's my home TD... best place on the planet as far as I'm concerned!

Oh, I say nothing. :D
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 08:48 PM Hey TD...
My parents live there as well.
Beats the heck out of suburban Long Island as far as they're concerned. A bit too rural for me....fifteen miles to the grocery store is too hard core for this city chick...
LOL, though, you just have to love the ability to say that you live near "Donner Pass". No matter how well people know you, the "cannibal connotation" is priceless. :D
zoliepup 12-10-2007, 08:58 PM Aww, Mish... I was braced and ready!
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 09:01 PM Aww, Mish... I was braced and ready!
I was just there over Thanksgiving. And, aside from the previously-mentioned trek to Safeway....I won't argue with anyone who loves it.
Though....maybe....for some people....the quietness is a bit deafening. LOL

tinydancer 12-10-2007, 09:18 PM I onced danced at a Million dollar Barmitzva (sp) in Huntington LI....or at least that was where we got off the train and picked up by our Limo.
The food was awesome LOL!
lynn59 12-10-2007, 09:19 PM Okay I am biased...and okay our winters suck.....but our summers make up for it...and our museums, food, lakefront, skyline, blues, festivals and friendly people......cannot be beat. Seattle would have to be my number two choice. Such a cool progressive city.

Wow, I've always wanted to visit Chicago. I've been all over the country, and everywhere in the midwest, except St Louis, has been off my radar.
And, what's up with everyone digging Seattle? I'm thinking that I should appreciate my new hometown a little more....lol
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 09:23 PM True story that LOLOL!
Crazy I'm tellin' ya!
The pay was great too.....anytime we get fed and paid well.....we're there!
Chicago is a pretty cool city....for the midwest:p

Oh, absolutely! I would love to visit, and see what so many love.
Though, I DO know better than to visit sometime other than the winter. (There is a reason why I lived in So Cal for so long....LOL)

lynn59 12-10-2007, 09:52 PM OK....I guess I will go :D
Would love to have you TD. I love to show off Chicago. I was in NYC this spring...Chicago is a big city but is much more centralized and easier to get around and I think cleaner and the people are super friendly. Just my opinion! I thought NYC was awesome too! So yeah Chicago is a great introduction to the big city.
pasquali 12-10-2007, 11:01 PM I'm not an experience traveler, but I love my Amsterdam, Holland. I love getting out of the Central Train Station in Amsterdam and catching wiffs of hashish in the air. I love the freedom, the tolerance and the openness of Holland. My first night there I was blown-away by how people don't blind their windows - I felt like I was on another planet. I want to learn Dutch and live there. Beware of standing under tram power lines or lampposts as the one of the millions of pigeons there will drop a plopper upon your head as I found out the hard way. And, oh by the way; canals, canals, and more canals - love it.
Mishigas73 12-10-2007, 11:08 PM My first night there I was blown-away by how people don't blind their windows - I felt like I was on another planet.
That reminds me of a great lesson my mom taught me. Blinds are open, and you're in a compromising position? Just smile. When my Canuck goes to close the blinds in the bedroom, I like to mention that. :D
It's great to hear someone so passionate about a city though.
Thanks for the input. :)
tinydancer 12-10-2007, 11:27 PM Good Lord...how could this old hippy leave out Amsterdam
Right up my alley ;)

LADave 12-11-2007, 12:57 AM LA?? Care to elaborate on that one? (I mean, aside from pointing to your username? LOL)
I'm surprised that I'm still the only one who's mentioned Los Angeles. I do have to admit that a big part of the reason why Los Angeles is my favorite city is that it has been my home for sixteen years, and very likely always will be. When I moved here right after college, I was in some ways young for my age--inexperienced and shy. The streets and sights of Los Angeles were my milieu as I became truly adult. Most of my friends are here. My favorite places are here. My life is here.
I love to travel and look forward to doing much more in the future. But the homecoming is always good. I always have a good feeling when I step off a plane into the LAX terminal.
Now, here's some of the stuff that makes Los Angeles neat.
Museums: Getty, L.A. County Museum of Art, Huntington, Norton Simon and many more. There's even one called the Museum of Jurassic Technology, dreamed up and founded by an eccentric genius.
The climate--'nuff said.
The ocean, the way the hills and mountains drop steeply into the water along much of our coast, and the way the light and mist combine into a luminous atmosphere. My gf (33 years my senior--I'm usually on the other side of the boards) lives in Santa Barbara, 90-some miles away. One of my all-time favorite drives is the run along the coast route between Santa Monica and Santa Barbara.
The sheer diversity of people, and things, and activities. I'm never bored in my town--there's always something happening! I meet all kinds of interesting people when I'm out having coffee, running errands, etc.
Food: I really enjoy dining out, and there's EVERYTHING here. Within two blocks of my apartment building are restaurants offering the following cuisines: Thai, Persian, Italian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Oaxacan (far southern Mexican) cuisine. Oh, and there's a good old American diner, too. Then, of course, the city has a big selection of fine-dining restaurants for more special occasions.
Now, I'll admit that Los Angeles, though its full Spanish name translates as "The City of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels," is not heaven. Traffic BLOWS! A catastrophic earthquake at some point is a real possibility. A lot of the city's streets are butt-ugly stretches of gas stations, strip malls and altogether too many billboards.
But, back to all the good stuff I described and that fact that this humungous, sprawling, smoggy city is HOME. That's why I LOVE L.A.!

1 general store; 1 diner where you can get a burger, fries & coke; 1 bar; everybody knows you by name.
Not necessarily my favorite town. But a good counterpoint to everybody else's choices. :bgrin2: Small town Americana. A throwback to what America used to be.
tinydancer 12-11-2007, 02:25 PM Ah... Geo, look up Berkeley Springs WV....it is the east cost equivalent lol!

Ok, my cities:

Riyadh - living here has taught me so much.
tinydancer 12-11-2007, 07:08 PM Awww thanks MAMA Amina!
I would love to see Mecca one day!!!
And Cairo is magical to me.....even the not so nice sections.
I have yet to really see Tibet, Bhutan to be exact, but I pray i will one day.
Paris is very pretty too....So much beauty both man made and natural.....I wish I could see it all and that others would leave that beauty alone!

I'd pretty much have to agree, so I named it my number 3 city. Although, I'd say it ties with my number 2, San Francisco. S.F. is a drop-dead gorgeous city! If you haven't visited San Francisco, definitely go sometime.

Too funny! Not a Disney fan, I gather? ;)
Kristin 12-11-2007, 08:07 PM I like Disney - but the towns around the parks are pretty cheesy and beat-down. At least they were when I was there. I had family living right there in the same area - you could practically walk to the park. I disliked the smog, as well. I was in CA back in the mid 80's. LA didn't do much for me, but I didn't see much of it.
Paris and San Fancisco are two of my favorite cities, too!
Mishigas73 12-12-2007, 02:45 PM In my four years living in LA, there were a couple of bright spots. One of them was Disney (though getting to Anaheim on the 5 was a hassle a lot of the time).
For me, driving through a lot of OC was like driving through a lot of LA. Strip malls, smog, California drivers, generally "blah". Nope, there's no love lost between Mishigas and the LA/OC area.
I do love being where I am now. I'm in a way more "suburban area" than I've lived in in years. Though not *quite* as quiet as where my parents currently live, it IS nice not to have so much ambient noise at night. And, also, knowing that you're close to Seattle and slightly less close (but still a reasonable drive) from Vancouver, is great for me.
zoliepup 12-12-2007, 02:56 PM Mish-

Oh, I see... I looked at zoliepup's link, and there was a map. My friend, back in 2001, picked me up in Reno and took me to her place (she lived in Quincy) and I think we must have driven through Truckee. I remembered the name. It IS a really neat area. Just a wee bit too "remote" for permanent living for me.
