Alternative & Indie Rock - Share Your Favorite Songs

We've already got a Classic Rock thread, people really enjoyed it, so I think now its time to do a thread about modern rock music. Hopefully this will appeal to younger forum members who aren't into "Classic Rock", as well as others who like both, me included.

From the perspective of time, there is some overlap between Classic Rock and Alternative, because Alternative has its roots as far back as 1976, with groups like REM, U2, the Cure. There is some overlap between Classic Rock and Alternative music, but not much. Alternative music is the music you don't hear on Classic Rock radio. It encompasses music considered metal (i.e. Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers) punk (i.e. The Cure, Social Distrotion) and many others. Some alternative music is influenced by mainstream rock, country, folk & popular music too.

Indie music is the independent label, college band & public radio stuff you don't hear too often on mainstream radio. Many groups start off as independent label bands and land contracts with major record labels later in their careers. Some of my favorite artists fall in this category.

From my point of view the term Alternative includes the whole range of sub-categories of modern rock music, in other words the music not played on oldies or classic rock radio. To clarify I intend for this thread to include metal & gothic and other genres you may think of as being too hard core to be called alternative.

Hopefully you'll be able to provide a link to an audio or video file so we can all listen to & enjoy the song. Lyrics are cool if you can copy & paste them into your reply. Supplying a picture of the performers would be going all out.

If you're like me, its impossible to nail down just one song as your fave, I plan to post several, but not all at once.

Again, Have fun ...

Highway 101 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx_ILfZIrDw)

by Social Distortion

Take a drive baby up the coast, yea highway 101
I’ll pass Ventura and Santa Barbara too, just as fast as my motor runs
Gotta pocket full of memories, some happy and some are sad
Gotta girl standin’ by my side through the good times and the bad

Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains

Sick boy, sick girl, looking nice dressed up on a Saturday night
Take a walk downtown for a while and chase the pale moonlight
I can still hear the mission bells and the train rollin’ through your town
Gonna leave this world behind, we’re Southern California bound

Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains
Follow the palm trees under the California sun
I believe in love now, I believe in love again

I just discovered an artist named Jose Gonzalez who I suppose would fall into the indie category:

http://www.myspace.com/josegonzalez

Heartbeats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4_4abCWw-w) is a really great song, and was on a Sony Bravia commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bb8P7dfjVw). It's actually a cover of the original by another Swedish band called the Knife (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUGyFYUlquo). I like his version better, but the Knife's video does have awesome retro skateboarding action.

Rob and I have been talking about indie rock in the past. Here is the link:
http://www.agelesslove.com/boards/showthread.php?t=32822

Right now my newest favorite band is one called Holy F*** (yeah, that's really their name) from Toronto. Here is a description

Holy F*** is a lo-fi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lo-fi_music) improvisational (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_improvisation) electronica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronica) band from Toronto, Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto%2C_Canada). The band have been called "Toronto's evil supergroup".[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_****#_note-0) They are a part of Dependent Music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependent_Music), a music label/collective that began in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarmouth%2C_Nova_Scotia) in 1994.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_****#_note-1)
The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film sequencer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_****#_note-2) According to Pitchfork Media (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitchfork_Media), "The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the techniques—looping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_loop), splicing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splicing), programming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_%28music%29) and the like—of that music."[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_****#_note-3) Their music has been described as a "strangely melodic and pulse pounding free-form fusion of the heavy chug and groove rock of Trans Am (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Am_%28band%29) and the quirkiness of Beck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beck) rolled into one mesmerizing viewing and listening experience."[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_****#_note-4)

Okay then.

This is a band that I absolutely loved as a kid and have started listening to again in the last year. They're so indie their fans used to send them money to help buy new gear so they could keep playing. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

Trashcan Sinatras (http://www.myspace.com/thetrashcansinatras)

All the Dark Horses (http://www.trashcansinatras.com/audio/darkhorses120904.mp3)

on the sunset, horses silhouette
all is calm tonight
new horizon, keep your eyes on those stars
lighting a way

take me somewhere out there

through the fields, in the night
all the dark horses ride
no more reining in
now my aim is in sight
to the wild and the light

out of harm's way, where the traps all lay
tying you down, selling you out
beating you down - they're all over town
know your true self, or your truth might bend
they will turf you out in the end
don't heed a word they say
keep heading away

faraway, slow in motion
through the fields, in the night
all the dark horses ride
no more reining in
now my aim is in sight
to the wild and the light

long-lost summer days
are shining around again,
sky ablaze, ride away...

My brother introduced me to Tegan and Sara (http://www.myspace.com/teganandsara) about a month ago, and I really really love them. They are twins and they are very cute and their music is very good. These are my two favorite songs off of their latest album, The Con.

Relief Next to Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6liwEZmaVc)

I miss you now,
I guess like I should have missed you then.
My body moves,
Like curtains waving in and out of wind,
In and out of windows.
I can’t untangle, (I can’t untangle)
When I feel and what would matter most.
I can’t close an eye, (I can’t close an eye)
Can't close an eyelid.
Now there’s just no point.
In reaching out for me.
In the dark, I’m just no good at giving relief.
In the dark, it won’t be easy to find relief.

And I’m not proud,
That nothing will seem easy about me.
But I promise this,
I won’t go my whole life,
Telling you I don’t need.
But I promise this,
I won’t go my whole life,
Telling you I don’t need.
I'll tell you now,
I guess like I should have told you then.
That thunder moves,
Like damn drawers slamming in my frame,
Slamming in my framework.

I can’t untangle, (I can’t untangle)
what I know and what should matter most.
I can’t close an eye, (I can’t close an eye)
Can't close an eyelid.
Now there’s just no point,
In reaching out for you.
In the dark, I’m just no good at giving relief
In the dark, it wont be easy to find relief

And I’m not proud that nothing will seem easy about me.
But I promise this, I won't go my whole life, telling you I don’t need
But I promise this, I won't go my whole life, telling you I don’t need
But I promise this, I won't go my whole life, telling you I don’t need
But I promise this, I won't go my whole life, telling you I don’t need

Dark Come Soon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD3Vro2gs1Q)

Dark, you can't come soon enough for me.
Saved from one more day of misery.
Everything I love, get back from me now.
Everyone I love, I need you now.

Don't forget a million miles from me.
Safe, and another day can pass by me.
Everything I love, get back from me now.
Everyone I love, I need you now.
So what? I lied,
I lie to me too.
So what? I lied,
I lie to me too.

Hold out for the ones you know will love you.
Hide out from the ones you know will love you too.
Right to the edge, I'm barely there.
Slow to make my move, I'm almost there.
Everything I say, I say to me first.
Everything I do, I do to me first.
So what? I lied,
I lie to me too.
So what? I lied,
I lie to me too.
Hold out for the ones you know will love you.
Hide out from the ones you know will love you too.

Dark, you can't come soon enough for me.

Good songs PP04, I've heard the Trash Can Sinatras live.

Here's something obscure .

This is a live recording of Unto the Resplendent (http://ia301217.us.archive.org/3/items/mermen2005-03-18.flac16/mermen2005-03-18-d2t02_64kb.mp3) by the Mermen.

Its instrumental, no lyrics. Being an independent band, the CD featuring the studio version of this song is no longer available new. Used copies go for $50 or more on eBay & Amazon. The studio version of this song is also featured on a Surf Music compilation CD sold by Starbucks.

I am so jealous. I came across their first album, Cake, when I was 11 and actually wore the tape out eventually. I got into some different stuff and kind of forgot about them for a while, but made a Pandora (http://www.pandora.com/) station for them a year or so ago and liked some of their newer stuff. I spent the Amazon gift card my mom got me for xmas on several of their albums and a DVD, but I've never seen them live.

Pandora is a really great tool for finding new artists, by the way. You create your own "radio stations" based on a song or artist and it finds other songs that share common musical characteristics. Most of the artists I've discovered on it I'd have never heard on the radio, even if I listened to the radio.

That's okay, the live version is great! It's on my iTunes now! That's like total stoner music, by the way.

Tegan and Sarah are not only twins, but Canadian Lesbian Twins... or CLT for short! Whenever Chris hears an indie pop female vocalist he assumes its them and is like "Is this CLT?"... No, Chris, Arcade Fire does NOT sound like Tegan and Sarah.

I love T&S and Arcade Fire both though!

See George, I didn't respond to this thread b/c I'm not big into music. Sure I have favorites, but I don't really do the whole "indie" thing and I'm pretty much always flipping the radio in the car anyways. Plus I've never been one to be able to "classify" things. I just know what I like! LOL

That being said, I've always been a fan of the goo goo dolls, esp the older music, and seether, three days grace, hinder, live, RHCP, lifehouse, but I like some pop stuff that's on the hit stations, plus I like a few sting songs esp "whenever i say your name" hmmm... i listen to classic rock/soft rock/classical the only thing I can NOT stand is rap and christian, lol (no offense) I throw the edge stations on and I'm good to go, esp if I can break out some air drums on my steering wheel!

I love many songs, so a favorite is very hard to pin down. I think Sting and Stevie Wonder are geniuses and some of their lyrics are amazing. I love Nate King Cole's' "Unforgettable," which isn't genius, but it reminds me of the biggest love of my life, Alicia. BUT, 41 years later the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" is STILL ahead of it's time. Below I shall paste the lyrics, but you must listen to the song itself to appreciate its inventiveness.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I'm crying.

Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.

Mister city policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like lucy in the sky, see how they run.
I'm crying, i'm crying.
I'm crying, i'm crying.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.

Sitting in an english garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don't come, you get a tan
From standing in the english rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.

Expert textpert choking smokers,
Don't you thing the joker laughs at you?
See how they smile like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied.
I'm crying.

Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel tower.
Elementary penguin singing hari krishna.
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.
Goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob g'goo.

Second Nature is a local Ventura band that combines influences of metal, punk and reggae music to create their own unique sound. The band performed from 2003 to 2006, and went on hiatus about a year ago when the vocalist decided to focus on his art carreer. Later in 2007 the drummer met with an untimely death. The band's web site is no longer up, but they have recently created a My Space (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=29221656) site were you can browse a selection of their songs.

The remaining 3 members have formed a band called Smoke Signals. Without a vocalist the band is currently playing instrumental compositions of their own creation. They have cut a CD, but they don't have a web site yet. The lead guitarist Justin has taken over duties on drums.

Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJkOyc_phy4)

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

recently I started listening to Elliott Smith again...but as far as love songs goes...almost anything by Death Cab for Cutie is good.

Oh and I really love the Juno soundtrack.

This is a cute song from Barry Louis Polisar:

If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee.
And if I was a tree growing tall and greeen
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves

If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee.
And if I was a tree growing tall and greeen
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were a river in the mountains tall,
The rumble of your water would be my call.
If you were the winter, I know I'd be the snow
Just as long as you were with me, let the cold winds blow

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were a wink, I'd be a nod
If you were a seed, well I'd be a pod.
If you were the floor, I'd wanna be the rug
And if you were a kiss, I know I'd be a hug

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

If you were the wood, I'd be the fire.
If you were the love, I'd be the desire.
If you were a castle, I'd be your moat,
And if you were an ocean, I'd learn to float.

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea

In The End (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIwWqYSbzGA)

by Linkin Park

It starts with ...
One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It’s so unreal
Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on / but didn’t even know
Wasted it all just to
Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried
so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought beside me
I’m surprised it got so far
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I
I tried so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I tried so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

Rise Above This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ3Jsn2uWMM)

by Seether

Take the light, undarken everything around me
Call the clowns and listen closely, i'm lost without you
Call your name every day when i feel so helpless
I'm fallin' down but i'll rise above this, rise above this

Hate the mind, regrets are better left unspoken
For all we know, this void will grow and
Everything's in vain, distressing you though it leaves me open
Feels so right, but i'll end this all before it gets me

Call your name every day, when i feel so helpless
I'm fallin' down, but i'll rise above this, rise above this
Call your name every day, when i seem so helpless
I'm fallin' down, but i'll rise above this, rise above this doubt

I'll mend myself before it gets me
(i'll mend myself before it gets me)
I'll mend myself before it gets me
(i'll mend myself before it gets me)

Call your name every day, when i feel so helpless
I'm fallin' down, but i'll rise above this, rise above this
Forty eight ways to say that i'm feelin' helpless
I'm fallin' down, but i'll rise above this, rise above this, rise above this, rise above this doubt

A Common Disaster (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjKEkDKaa1k)

by The Cowboy Junkies

A candle burning for everything I've ever wanted
A tattoo burned for everything I've ever wanted and lost
I had a long list of names that I kept in my back pocket,
but I've cut it down to one and your name's at the top

Won't you share a common disaster?
Share with me a common disaster
A common disaster

I found myself a friend,
but he's crooked as a stick in water
So now I'm writing fairy tales
to catch the spirit of revenge
He's got a plan to steal my little sister,
but I'm not too concerned
'cause I will get him in the end

Won't you share a common disaster?
Share with me a common disaster
A common disaster

Going to find me someone to share
A common disaster
Run away with me from a life so cramped and dull
Not worry too much about the happily-ever-after
Just keep the Caddy moving
'til we're well beyond that hill

Won't you share a common disaster?
Share with me a common disaster
A common disaster

I really like this one to When Kai and I were going through all that BS with the parents we would listen to this together and cry
Chasing Cars lyrics

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Breathing from a hole in my lung
I had no one
But faces in front of me
Racing through the void in my head
To find traces of a good luck academy
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh

Sparks ignite and trade them for thought
About no one
And nothing in particular
Washed the sickend socket in drove
Resent nothing
There’s good will inside of me
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh

Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line
Lately I’m a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line

Something I will never forget
I felt desp'rate
And stuck to the marrow
Invisible to everyone else
I'm a sex change
And a damsel with no heroine
Ooh, Ooh, Ooh

Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line
Lately I’m a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line

I don't need no time to say
There's no changing yesterday
If we keep talking and I keep walking in straight lines

Wake me up low with a fever
Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
Walking in a straight line
Lately I’m a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line

it is one of those songs that when you are down it reminds you to pick yourself up and go go go

Dreams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogeV4mpx0Lo)

by The Cranberries

Oh my life is changing everyday
Every possible way
Though my dreams, it’s never quite as it seems
Never quite as it seems

I know I felt like this before
But now I’m feeling it even more
Because it came from you

Then I open up and see
The person fumbling here is me
A different way to be

I want more, impossible to ignore
Impossible to ignore
They’ll come true, impossible not to do
Impossible not to do

Now I tell you openly
You have my heart so don’t hurt me
For what I couldn’t find

Talk to me amazing mind
So understanding and so kind
You’re everything to me

Oh my life is changing everyday
Every possible way
Though my dreams, it’s never quite as it seems
’cause you’re a dream to me
Dream to me

Stellar ~ Incubus
You are stellar

Meet me in outer space
We could spend the night;
watch the earth come up
I've grown tired of that place;
won't you come with me?
We could start again.

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do
How do you do it?
It's better than I ever knew

Meet me in outer space
I will hold you close, if you're afraid of heights
I need you to see this place, it might be the only way;
that I can show you how
It feels to be inside you

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do.
How do you do it?
It's better than I ever knew.
How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do

Ohhh...

You are stellar.

You are stellar.

How do you do it?
make me feel like I do.
How do you do it?
its better than I ever knew.

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do.

How do you do it?
Make me feel like I do.

All That I Am (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLq3XAXs2JQ)

by Rob Thomas

I am the one winged bird for flying
Sinking quickly to the ground
See your faith in me subsiding
See you prime for giving in
I give you all that I am

I am the sound of love's arriving
Echoed softly on the sand
Lay your head upon my shoulder
Lay your hand within my hand
I give you all that I am

And I breathe where you breathe
Let me stand where you stand
With all that I am

I am the white dove for a soldier
Ever marching as to war
I would give my life to save you
I stand guarding at your door
I give you all that I am

I am the one winged bird for flying
Sinking quickly to the ground
I am the blind man for a watchdog
I am prime for giving in
I'll show you all that I am

And I breathe so you breathe
Let me stand so you'll stand
With all that I am ...............

And I breathe where you breathe
Let me stand where you stand

And I breathe so you breathe
Let me stand so you'll stand
With all that I am

For those of you hurting tonight, my thoughts and my heart are with you.

Little Wonders (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT6EVIIcLLo)

by Rob Thomas

let it go,
let it roll right off your shoulder
don’t you know
the hardest part is over
let it in,
let your clarity define you
in the end
we will only just remember how it feels

our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders,
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away,
but these small hours,
these small hours still remain

let it slide,
let your troubles fall behind you
let it shine
until you feel it all around you
and i don’t mind
if it’s me you need to turn to
we’ll get by,
it’s the heart that really matters in the end

our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders,
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away,
but these small hours,
these small hours still remain

all of my regret
will wash away some how
but i can not forget
the way i feel right now

in these small hours
these little wonders
these twists & turns of fate
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away but these small hours
these small hours, still remain,
still remain
these little wonders
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away
but these small hours
these little wonders still remain
