Call out the instigators
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now
Lock up the streets and houses
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now
Hand out the arms and ammo
We're going to blast our way through here
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together
Geo55 01-26-2008, 12:49 AM Unchained Melody
The music for Unchained Melody was composed by Alex North and the lyrics by Hy Zaret. It is one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, by some counts having spawned over 500 versions in hundreds of different languages.
1950's The song was written as the theme for an obscure 1955 prison film titled Unchained (where the song gets its name). Todd Duncan, the baritone who performed in the original Porgy and Bess, sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. Les Baxter released an instrumental version which reached #2. Al Hibbler followed close behind with a vocal version that reached #3 on the Billboard charts. He was followed soon after by Jimmy Young whose version hit #1 on the British charts. Roy Hamilton's version reached #6, while June Valli took it to #29. Rockabilly legend Gene Vincent recorded it for his second album in 1956. Harry Belafonte sang it at the 1956 Academy Awards where it finished fifth in the voting for the Academy Award for Best Original Song of 1955.
1960's In 1963, an uptempo, doo-wop version of Unchained Melody by Vito & the Salutations hit the eastern U.S. regional charts. The song regained national popularity when another version was produced by Phil Spector in 1965, performed as a solo by Bobby Hatfield, although credited to the Righteous Brothers. It climbed to #4.
1970's On June 21, 1977, just six weeks prior to his death, Elvis Presley performed Unchained Melody for what would be his last television appearance, Elvis In Concert. A recording of Unchained Melody from a live concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan, featuring Elvis on piano was included on his last record album Moody Blue.
1990's Unchained Melody reappeared on the Billboard charts in 1990, reaching #19, after Hatfield's recording was used in the film Ghost. It reached #1 in the UK, becoming the UK's top selling single of 1990; it also later reached #1 in Australia, staying at number-one for 7 weeks from November 1990 through January 1991. The doo-wop version by Vito & the Salutations was used in the film Goodfellas in 1990.

Tourniquet 02-01-2008, 01:23 AM just to show how much a cover can depart from the orginal
Turn the Page by Bob Segar which was later covered by Metallica is one example , another one actually departs even more by each cover is
"My Tourniquet" By Soul Embraced (a death metal band)
the song was then covered/re imagined by Evanescense who turned it into a more pop sounding song, it was then covered yet again by the band Static Heaven who took the evanescense style version and re did it as a techno song
some others are "Working Class Hero" By John Lennon which has been covered by multiple other people and bands including Marilyn Manson and Green day
"straight edge" by minor threat has been covered by almost every sXe punk band on the planet, but the NOFX slow version is the funniest (who arent sXe)
"Enter sandman" by metallica was covered by Motorhead and sounded simaler
Ozzy's "Iron Man" was covered by Dio (not sure if that counts) and i liked his version better
"snap your fingers (snap your neck)" by Prong was covered by Demon Hunter and redone as a death metal song which is like better then the orginal
The Plasmatics "sex addict" was covered by My Ruin on "the shape of things to come" mini album, which i also prefer over the orginal

Geo55 03-25-2008, 10:02 PM Misirlou (often mis-spelled Miserlou)
Misirlou is a song popularized in the USA by the originator of the surf music genre, Dick Dale. Introduced in 1962, it is Mr Dale's most popular song, one of surf music's most famous songs. It has been used in countless movie soundtracks and television commercials.
Most people are under the impression that Dick Dale wrote the music for Misirlou. This is not so. Misirlou originated in Greece, about 1927, as a sad love song about an Egyptian Girl (Misirlou is Greek for Egyptian Girl). It is a popular belly dancing song in the Middle East, and it is a wedding song in Israel. The song is well known and popular throughout the Middle East and in Greece.
Also unkown to Americans, there are lyrics to the song Misirlou:
English Lyrics
Desert shadows creep across the purple sands.
Natives kneel in prayer by their caravans.
There, silhouetted under an eastern star,
I see my long lost blossom of Shalimar.
You, Misirlóu, are the moon and the sun, fairest one.
Old temple bells are calling cross the sand.
We’ll find our Kismet, answering love’s command.
You, Misirlóu, are a dream of delight in the night.
To an oasis, sprinkled by stars above,
Heaven will guide us. Allah will bless our love.
Ah, ah, Misirlóu
Translated Greek Lyrics
My Misirlou (Egyptian girl), your sweet glance
It's lit a flame in my heart
Oh, my love, Oh, my night
Your lips are dripping honey
Oh, Misirlou, magical, exotic beauty
Madness will overcome me, I can't take any more
Oh, I'll steal you away from the Arab land
My black-eyed, my wild Misirlou
My life changes with one kiss
Oh, my love, Oh, my night
From your sweet little lips
