Edit to add: PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST SONGS OUTSIDE OF THE A-Z RULE
I have an idea.
This will be a thread for World and popular music.
It will advance at a much slower pace than the other music threads but it will be very entertaining and most of all it will help members discover songs from different cultures.
We have members from different countries but also many members who are certainly open to cultures other than theirs.
Please feel free to comment on the songs that you discover or to post stories related to the song, including your own experience with it ie: heard it during a vacation, or your parents listened to it etc....
or to post translated lyrics or at least say what the song is about.

Hope this will work.

I'll start

A: Avec le Temps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiXcUTTLud4) Léo Ferré

I tried to post a link to one of my favorite artists....Enrico Macias, but I couldn't do it for some reason.

I love his music and heard it throughout my childhood. My mother is Italian by heritage, French by citizenship and was born and raised in North Africa (Tunisia) and he was one of many that my mother exposed us to.

I grew up with a lot of different music from many different cultures, so I think this thread is exciting that you started. Just not sure why I can't post the link to the video I attempted.

Anyway, I've looked at all of the music you provided and loooove it all!

Aaaaaah, finally some sign of life from a member.

I grew up with 2 of the songs by Macias, one was about leaving his coutry and the other was about a guitar. I was too young to remember the names. I'll try to find them for you.

Oh nooo !!! so sorry Blue Skies. I waited and waited and nobody posted. Please stay and post some more.

I LOVE that song :)

A late French comedian called Coluche, used to have a joke about that song.
One guy asked him what did the CCCP stand for on the Soviet flag? and he answered, it must be CuCurruCucu Paloma

Marianne, all you need to do is to go on youtube, find your song and post the link of that page. Please try again.

Italian Partisian song

B:Bella Ciao (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4UE40dUZL2Q&feature=related)

Oooooh, I loved this video and song! My mother was in North Africa as a child when Rommel (the desert fox) and his Afrika Corps invaded, so she and her family spent a good part of her childhood running from them.

I grew up with listening to her experiences and those of my grandmother, grandfather and aunts and uncles as well. I am very touched by the struggles of people that have to live in war conditions. My brother-in-law and his family are Palestinian and so I've been able to learn what their upbringing has been.

I guess my point is, that while I've never directly experienced living in conditions brought on by a war happening on my native soil , I have been surrounded by people in my life that have and when I see videos like the one you just shared, well, it just sends chills down my spine. Thank you.

Of course I'm aware that the USA (not America) is a new country.

YAWN.... I am not interested in arguing semantics. But we AMERICANS do not refer to the United States of America as "The United States of America" every time we speak about her. We have used our God given ability to manipulate the English language and just refer to her as "America" most of the time.

However, there are two assumed implicit goals resulting from your standoff-ish posts directed toward me:

1. You need to be right about something.

2. You do not want me to include me in your game.

Therefore, I will not participate anymore.

Have a nice day.

Wow....such arrogance! I have to admit that when I saw your first post and you indicated that you felt there needed to be some American representation on this thread, I thought, yup, typical American arrogance. Then I thought, no, don't assume that....he's just wanting to offer some traditional American music and contribute to this thread.

Your response here just confirmed my first impression. I am an American and I think the attitude you just displayed has unfortunately been very typical these last few years of a large majority in my country. How sad that you felt threatened by a "World Music" thread....how limited your world must be.

Oh well, you said you will not contribute to this thread. I say, Good riddance.

It's not "American Arrogance". It's my arrogance. And I am not threatened. I am frustrated.

But please, trust me. I am a good person. I just can't leave well enough alone.

Also, I cannot apologize for not being given access to such a powerful blood lineage as those that come from the Middle East, Russia, or The Asian countries.

I will accept "American Ignorance" however.

Actually, you're right. I shouldn't have made the statement so broadly. Of course not ALL Americans feel that way, but it's been my experience that a lot of them do. Either way it is typical of the "Ugly American" behaviour that I've seen, sadly, too much in the past 8 years.

This is about MUSIC folks, please stick to that.

My aim was open trough a GAME, a few windows to different cultures.

d2harvey posted a song that didn't really fit in here and I asked him if he could not post a more traditional song, which he did and which I enjoyed.

I didn't mean to be rude when I pointed out the difference between America and the USA. I was referring to what our friend here, Sheila, from Panama has explained several times. She is American too.

Please stay d2harvey and don't be mean to me.

And please folks DO NOT turn this into a political debate.

I am taking into consideration that the large majority of posters here are from the USA, so French songs for them will be considered "world music"

If my thread is annoying anyone, please PM me, and I will delete it, but not without a feeling of disappointment at the lack of openness of some members.

Toamna by Gheorghe Tudor (http://youtube.com/watch?v=xgN7LchXcaA)

I question if the name of that is accurate on youtube, because I could swear there was another song I heard by that name. But this is beautiful anyway.

And, to honor my Kentucky roots, here's some bluegrass music. If that's not American folk music, I don't know what is. I know that the origins are Celtic, but it definitely became it's own genre here in the bluegrass state.

Nadina, Lebanon.

I cried so much when I found this. Maybe the song isn't the greatest, but so many memories came back with it.

This little girl had gone to Italy to sing this song both in Italian and in Arabic (Lebanese song originally in Arabic) during the horrible years of the civil war, and won the first prize at the UNESCO.

in Arabic the name of the song is

T: Tiri Ya Asfoura (http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=aQTG0p36i9U&feature=related) (Fly O Bird)
