With gas prices nearing $4 per gallon, are there any cheerful drivers left on the road?
Well, if there are, chances are they're driving a green car.
People who own emerald green automobiles, it turns out, have the most positive attitude about the course of their own lives. Dark blue and silver are other colors chosen by upbeat people.
People whose car is: Have confidence that is:
Emerald green 5.5% above average
Dark blue 3.2% above average
Silver 1.2% above average
White Average
Sunny yellow 3.7% below average
Orange 4.1% below average
Bright blue 5.5% below average
Bright yellow 8.3% below average
Red 8.8 % below average
Black 14.6% below average
Red supposedly connotes an aggressive, high-speed personality, while yellow, theoretically, is for folks with sunny dispositions. But survey data show that people who drive red or yellow cars have below-average confidence. And black cars, supposedly a sign of power and elegance, are driven by the most downbeat drivers of all.
The automotive color-coding comes from CNW Marketing Research in Bandon, Ore., which asked nearly 1,900 Americans about their attitudes toward their own lives at several points over the course of a year. CNW also asked each respondent the color of the car they drive most often, which allowed the researchers to develop a kind of color-confidence index. According to CNW, here's what the color of a car says about the person who bought it:
People whose car is: Experience:
Black, dark blue,
or silver Consistent moods
White, sunny yellow,
or bright blue Modest mood swings
Orange, red, bright
yellow, or
emerald green The most pronounced mood swings
JennyJen 05-14-2008, 11:50 PM Hmm both my cars are black...:bgrin2:
tinydancer 05-14-2008, 11:52 PM Hmmm...I am silver by default (it was the best truck for the money)....I am typically a teddybear brown with beige interior type of gal.
I miss my Jeep Wagoneers.....they quit making them in 92'...probably had something to do with the 10mi a gallon thing lol but still....I do miss having one.
tinydancer 05-14-2008, 11:54 PM Well...considering I've seen one of your cars...I think your an acception lol!
JennyJen 05-15-2008, 12:00 AM Well...considering I've seen one of your cars...I think your an acception lol!
Thank you...I like to believe that as well!!!
Angel 05-15-2008, 12:38 AM Mine's purple. We call it the Barney-Mobile but I guess there's far too little of us to be included! :D
sheila4pd 05-15-2008, 12:44 AM The reason I pick silver is because I believe it is the color that best hides dirt. Does that make me upbeat?
dmjoy 05-15-2008, 02:05 AM Another silver car here.... for once I am on the good team ;)
Bodhi Tree 05-15-2008, 03:53 AM I owned two cars in my entire life and they were both silver. I didn't pick them for their colour, they just happened to be.
Petre's car is silver as well.
cindee 05-15-2008, 04:44 AM My car is tan (or bronze) with a tan tweed interior. Where do I fit in?
truckman 05-15-2008, 07:11 AM Hmmm...I am silver by default (it was the best truck for the money)....I am typically a teddybear brown with beige interior type of gal.
My tired F350 crewcab is white with a red interior. Only because it was the only color choice I had with the complete lack of options I wanted back in 93. After all, who needs leather seats in a worktruck?
I miss my Jeep Wagoneers.....they quit making them in 92'...probably had something to do with the 10mi a gallon thing lol but still....I do miss having one.
I always liked those... simple and durable. But only 10 mpg? Heck, my 7000lb crewcab does better than that.
grumpysgirl 05-15-2008, 07:19 AM im a loser...I did not pick my car color out..it was cheap..
white...ugly white:eek:
mnorman3 05-15-2008, 08:16 AM Hum. I'm currently driving a black car. But I picked out the CAR I wanted and got the color they had on the lot. LOL ::Shrugs Shoulders::
Let's see how my life as a driver went:
1st Car - Silver
2nd Car - Burgandy (would that be considered red?)
3rd Car - Burgandy/Silver two tone. (Hummmm I'm on both ends of the scale!)
4th car - white/silver two tone.
5th car - Green
6th car - silver
7th car - white
8th & geez finally the final car - Black.
Dang. I've owned a lot of cars.
Belisama 05-15-2008, 08:43 AM When buying cars, I almost always picked gold or bronze; second choice, metallic emerald green (NOT forest green!). Completely vain of me and I'm almost embarrassed to admit this but I always preferred those colours because they look good with my red hair!
p.s. I'm surprised there isn't anything about gold cars on the list - it's a pretty popular colour!
TALLBLONDECUTE 05-15-2008, 08:54 AM My car is black, I did not pick the car out of a car lot, I bought it used, but happy with the color of the car. My previous vehicle was silver and that one I picked it new out of a car lot, but my favorite color in clothing is red! :bgrin2:

Is it a joke, or do they seriously believe that whatever scale they have invented for measuring confidence is reliable enough to justify stating that the owners of silver cars have exactly 1.012 times the confidence of white car owners, while drivers of yellow ones have exactly .963 times it?

tinydancer 05-15-2008, 04:53 PM LOL...who knows....just another way our tax dollars are probably being spent!
Kristin 05-15-2008, 11:43 PM Hmm both my cars are black...:bgrin2:
One is black and one is silver/grey.
I wouldn't say I was downbeat at all! I just wanted a car to impress clients. They kind of expect us Realtors to have a luxury car (not that I can afford one, but have to look the part) so I specifically picked a black car with a tan leather interior.
Our other car is grey and we got that from my parents for $1 and less than 40k miles on it. Can't complain about that!
My "dream" car would be a blue-grey Mercedes convertable or a red Mustang.
Maybe I'm just a split personality! LOL!
Although, I think my black car looks slick and it's the nicest car I've ever had and I'm VERY happy in it!
The last car I had was green/teal and I HATED that car!
Maybe for the black car stats they just happened to get a lot of old people, hearse drivers or limo driver that are depressed or hate their jobs! LOL!

Well, there you have it. They're bi-polar! LOL

I love my black car. It's the best car I've ever had with all of the bells and whistles. I'm HAPPY in my car! lOL!
Confuzed 05-15-2008, 11:53 PM my car is a black blazer...windows are all tinted black too so its extra black lol
JennyJen 05-15-2008, 11:54 PM my car is a black blazer...windows are all tinted black too so its extra black lol
Windows have to be tinted black in my car...its a rule...I get pulled over left and right cause it's illegal in NY but still..they must be black! So the car is really black on black on black!
I can't find the pics I had of my cars...crap!

What do you mean they HAVE to be tinted?
I think in NC they are going to up the illegal tint fines to like $300 or something stupid, i think its only 200 now. I think 30% is the legal limit in nc.
Blue Skies 05-16-2008, 02:01 AM My car is white with a finely burnished, multi-layered patina of urban atmospheric fallout. :tongue2:

hahahahaha! :bgrin2:
Inahnia 05-16-2008, 08:42 AM LOL...let's see:
Most of my early cars were given to me or bought from relatives:
I have had: a light blue car
a beige Volkswagon beetle
a pale green car (the green lizard)
a yellow Pinto
a red Lincoln/Mercury sport coupe (bought from my sister)
a red Honda Civic (my Dad gave us)
a medium blue Toyota Celica (my Dad again)
a silver Ford Probe GT( i LOVED That car...first one I ever bought Myself)
I WANTED to buy a purple car at one point, and looked at a metallic burnt orange one too
another Red Honda Civic (second one I bought...and the first and last Brand NEW car I ever had...but it got totalled :()
replaced with a silver Honda Civic just like the red one only second hand
Man i have had a LOT of cars!
My husband ( who IS bipolar) has a medium green Nissan truck...but I think he got that one from his Dad....
I have YET to have a car the color I REALLY want.....which would be bright robin's egg blue or turquoise...kind of the color of the little question mark post icon....because, like Kelley....I think it would go well with my red hair! :fooddance7:
truckman 05-16-2008, 11:09 AM Let's see how my life as a driver went:
I'll play this game. Not many of these cars were repainted by me, therefore not even remotely similar to the original colors. In fact, many of them arrived into my life with many pieces missing and/or covered in multiple colored primers. Also, many of these cars were in my life in parallel. I generally have a full driveway :)
1st car - 1966 GTO convertible, deep maroon with white roof/interior.
2nd car - 1969 Ford XL Convertible, dark red with black interior/roof.
3rd car - 1957 Thunderbird convertible - "powder blue" outside, white inside.
4th car - 1970 Mustang Fastback - Yellow with black stripes outside, black inside.
5th car - 1970-1/2 Ford Falcon station wagon - metallic green outside, black inside.
6th car - 1971 Caddy Eldorado - white inside/outside.
7th car - 1970 Road runner - never made it to paint - was always in primer.
8th car - 1988 Plymouth Reliant in "Cordovan" which is an ugly brownish reddish color. Basic commuter car until I added a turbocharger :)
9th car - 1989 BMW 735il (black/black - V12!)
10th car - 1990 Town Car - I hacked this up from a 4-door sedan into a 2-door convertible, then painted it black and the interior remained factory grey.
11th car - 1992 Ford Taurus - blue outside, grey inside, also hacked this up and converted it from front-wheel-drive to rear-wheel-drive, installed a much larger motor, a corvette suspension all around, and added a turbo. Wolf in sheeps clothing.
12th car - 1992 Lincoln Continental in dark green/grey interior. Added supercharger and after a few years I rebuilt the engine with fancy parts to withstand 7500 RPM redline. FUN to drive :)
Cars in the driveway:
13th car - 1999 Crown Victoria "Intercepter" white outside, tan leather inside.
14th car - 1993 Olds Delta 88 in grey all around (got for free, and it's been crazy reliable so I use it as my "work in brooklyn" car.
Now, onto trucks :)
1st truck - 1981 F350 crewcab, black interior, zebra exterior, sat on 48" tires and had 22" of suspension lift (I was very young at the time, so this seemed "reasonable".
2nd truck - 1979 Bronco - rust/primer/more rust.
3rd truck - Chevy C30 dually crewcab in faded red with random grey primer spots, random interior colors depending on what the parts came from :)
4th truck - Dodge D200 extended cab, in "copper" with a black interior. This one got a large engine with a pair of turbos, and was a ton of fun to drive.
Trucks in driveway:
5th truck - 1993 F350 crewcab, white exterior/red interior - it has 500,092 miles on it and she's still going.
There were other cars/trucks that passed through, but I either sold them off as "unfinished projects" or scrapped them because they disintegrated faster than I could get to restoring them, sad to say.
After this weekend there may be an Edsel added to the list if I like what it looks like when I take a visit :)
Somehow looking at my vehicle history, it seems that I may be personally responsible for any gasoline shortages :(
TALLBLONDECUTE 05-16-2008, 11:09 AM I forgot I also have this car... Black and silver. 1961 220S Mercedes Benz.
PS Sorry I do not know how to make the pic bigger!
Kristin 05-16-2008, 01:29 PM My husband ( who IS bipolar) has a medium green Nissan truck...but I think he got that one from his Dad....
I have YET to have a car the color I REALLY want.....which would be bright robin's egg blue or turquoise...kind of the color of the little question mark post icon....because, like Kelley....I think it would go well with my red hair! :fooddance7:
OK, that's scary how he actually fits the profile! Did he ever have yellow or orange, too?? That would be too coincidental!
Is the color you talk about for yourself (robin's egg blue) the color of your shirt in your avatar? You DO look good in that color!
JennyJen 05-16-2008, 06:33 PM What do you mean they HAVE to be tinted?
I think in NC they are going to up the illegal tint fines to like $300 or something stupid, i think its only 200 now. I think 30% is the legal limit in nc.
I mean I can't drive a car that doesn't have tintied windows, it's this thing I have, the windows have to be black!
And Kristin I've been going nuts trying to find my car pics...for the life of me I can't remember what I did with them...
Blue Skies 05-17-2008, 06:06 PM Somehow looking at my vehicle history, it seems that I may be personally responsible for any gasoline shortages :(
Truckman, you forgot to include your darling 3-year-old son's vehicle(s) too.
I sense that a dynasty is in the making there. ;) :)

eponavet 05-17-2008, 06:51 PM Metallic green toyota tacoma pre-runner, a bit jacked up for clearance and traction on all the dirt roads and fields I drive through. I had a choice of white, dark red and green....I picked green and have always liked it, although it shows dirt more than I like, b/c I DON'T like to wash my car! :tongue2:
truckman 05-17-2008, 08:35 PM Truckman, you forgot to include your darling 3-year-old son's vehicle(s) too.
