I only just recently saw this movie for the first time, a few weeks ago. Yes, it is somewhat unconventional, which is why i think its somewhat better than most.
Even though its got Tom 'dont you look at me !' Cruise in it, Magnolia is a very symbolic and deep film.

The Frogs - are washing over, and cleansing away the old person, and bringing in the new. I suppose you could look at the rain in many ways, although the director never really liked to discuss the way in which he meant the frogs to symbolise the characters various life issues.

From how i see it, the film is all about 'letting go', the frogs represent in part the 'spiritual plague' that must be endured, if we as humans are to proceed forwards in life.

The film is rife is biblical references, esp. to Exodus 8:2. A nice allegorical tale of various personal stories, each character having to leave and move onto new unknown lands.

A clever and thought provoking movie. Fortunately i have a spider phobia, and not frogs.

Apparently this is an actual phenomenon...say there is an extreme weather pattern in one area, such as a tornado, and things (like frogs) get pulled up into the clouds...well, what goes up must come down, therefore, the sky lets loose with a rain of frogs. Scientific explaination approximate here, I learned about it a long time ago...but you get the gist.

great movie though.
