I would say one taboo is hunting humans! http://www.freeadpower.org/~mrsmiles/contrib/corky/smilies16.gif But many of our ancestors were canibals. Early Brazilians, for example, described that human flesh tasted like bananas. That's maybe why we are sometimes called a Banana Republic. http://216.40.249.192/s/cwm/cwm/eek5.gif
There are many taboos even nowadays, it depends on the society you are living in and your culture. Some taboos are well known in medecine (like not eating porc, which was very good in old times because it ended up protecting those people from certain diseases). Well, maybe this is less a taboo and more a rule nowadays.
Having sexual intercourse immediately before, during and immediately after female's menstruation is another one. Touching a woman (in old times) among Jews was a taboo for she was considered impure and this helped them to increase their population in a time when they really needed it, as a persecuted people with no land.
Incest is a taboo. It's something that disgusts many of us, but it was not always so, many societies accepted it and even expected it in royal families, like in Egypt, for example.
Taboos are not always bad, since they are often based in some reality.

That was Tabu. I used to wear it before I started buying essential oils and mixing my own. The perfume bottle was shaped like a violin, too.

Taboos are the written and unwritten rules of a society. And they do change over time and from culture to culture. What is a norm in one time and place is a taboo in another.

Pedophilia was a norm in classical Greece and Rome, now it's highly taboo. Revealing female legs were such a taboo in Victorian England and America that even tables had their legs covered, now it's quite the norm.

Ask any one who does business with cultures other than their own and they will tell you that taboos are alive and well in our modern world.

Take age gap relationships for example. If you go out and ask someone what they think of it, you'll get some interesting responces from their body language. With the exception of this site, i've never been in a place where age gap relationships were ok and the norm and perfectly acceptable.

Taboo's are interesting things. Its kinda interesting having an Anthropology class, because we've talked about Taboo's often enough. . .its funny whats taboo for us isn't taboo for a lot of other cultures. And the differences too. The Nuer have a very strong love for their cows, so much that they would never dream of slaughtering them for their meat and even rub burnt cow dung on themselves. I don't know any "westerner" who has that same mentality.

but, yeah Taboos are still alive and kicking

http://e4u.deltait.com.au/dressed/bek127.gif Brazilian indians ate mainly Portuguese and French people by 1500 and something, so I don't know, they described the taste as that of bananas.
But maybe you are right, people are so afraid of everything nowadays, they might as well taste like chicken...

cannibalisim
dating someone not of the age of consent (i.e. i'm 25 and he/she is 14)
stealing

Seems actually taboos are individual, and only the things that our minds cannot accept. For example, I have read tales of cannibalism, human sacrifice, pedophiles, etc. But with the people involved it did not seem "taboo." In their minds it was accepted...and therefore they were capable of. Maybe that is it...taboos are the things we do not consider ourselves capable of, and we cannot understand anyone else being capable of.
But then, I suppose society dictates a certain portion of it...as the example above about it being taboo for a woman to expose her legs... Hmmmmm...I am pondering here.

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One stops, looks at the other and says, "Does this taste funny to you?"

Sorry I couldn't have a thread about cannibals go by and not here at least one joke.

Lots of interesting things here....

Taboo has always grabbed my interest... mainly becuase what some considered wrong I found interesting. Sometimes I think I would rather have lived durring an age with a more relaxed view of things.

what if everything was accepted and had a place.

older/younger relationships a norm

what if a child didnt feel violated when an adult..umm... went further than they should in our day and age? What if it was just another experience people shared like talking. A lot of what if's.

Its kind of wierd to admit this... but if a society that accepted something as freaky as being a pedefile existed there woundnt be anything wrong with it. It would out in the open... kids wouldnt feel different for having the experience... adults wouldnt feel like freaks becuase they had it.... very interesting.

Here is something that is very taboo in America..... guys holding hands or showing really sensitive effection for one another. I dont think there is really anything wrong with how we do show one another we care for eachother... its just a trip. My borther went to India and took a picture of two male police officers walking down the street holding hands. They were good friends... I guess.. maybe they dont even have to be that good of friends to act that way there.

women certainly have a lot more freedom in this area.

I hate this, because I thought the original topic of this thread was interesting, but I am going to remove posts. *sigh* Lets try once again not to be rude or offensive and respect everyone's opinion.... :) and no rude names, please.

"sink to his level ","...because you my sweet pet have potential."
In all fairness, please excuse me Joennalee, better a low level 'going nowhere' nobody than a self-rightous fool, so caught up in their own megalomania they actualy buy their own bs.
