Favorite musician: James Taylor...if I didnt have to work I'd be one of those groupies that follow him around=) rofl
Tyger74 05-17-2003, 06:48 PM Sing,
Awesome post ;). I have so many favorites and it depends on the genre. If I was going to to point out one person that really stands out, it would be Kenny G. His sax playing really puts me in the mood.
Savannah 05-17-2003, 07:52 PM Song: Black Sabbath's Paranoid
Musician: Bon Scott
socalhotrodder 05-17-2003, 08:26 PM Ohhh this is so hard - picking just one that is....Music is of so many genres are such a big part of my life...
As far as songs go...
Elton John's Tiny Dancer, The Doors' Riders On The Storm, Guns & Roses' Sweet Child 'O Mine, but for a favorite I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin's 10 Years Gone.
Artists...
Probably Dion & the Belmonts, Zeppelin, or the Rolling Stones...
Sorry I couldn't pick just one!!! ;)
~schr~
singalou 05-17-2003, 10:34 PM ooooo riders on the storm...havent thought of that one in a while=)
SUSAN203 05-17-2003, 10:47 PM I also find this one tough-I'm a musician and my musical tastes vary so much, especially for someone my age. I think Mozart is a genius......and I also love everyone else from Duke Ellington to Garth Brooks to AC/DC to Anne Murray!
I really love Chicago......seen them in concert about 14 times and going again in a couple of weeks. Right now I can't get enough of the Celine Dion version of "I Drove All Night"......also done by Cyndi Lauper and Roy Orbison. I also love the meaning of "The Dance" by Garth Brooks and "I Made it Through the Rain" by Barry Manilow.
singalou 05-18-2003, 12:19 AM I DROVE ALL NIGHT...to get to YOU...WOOT! gotta love that DRIVE=)
jordan 05-18-2003, 12:55 AM favorite song....hmmm, there are so many to choose from....I will go with this one, though, a song which I just have to turn the volume all the way up for when I hear it...Jukebox Hero, by Foreigner....I don't even like Foreigner all that much, but just that one song really gets me pumped.....
SUSAN203 05-18-2003, 08:33 AM Jordan-What a great song! I feel the same way about it. Also, (as much as I hate to admit this) "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins really gets me going. When it comes on the radio, I always kick the volume up to 10!
Polly 05-18-2003, 09:49 AM My most favorite song of all time (I'm a musician too) is:
"Never Let You Go" by Steelheart. That guy has a voice that absolutely transcends anything I've ever heard out of a human being!!!
Favorite musicians: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Stevie Vei and my close personal friend (keyboard player for Darryl Worley) Larry Hazelbaker! :)

Favorite ballad? "You've Got a Friend" by James Taylor
ukfireball 05-18-2003, 05:37 PM My musical taste varies depending on what kind of mood Im in, and I have a very broad range of music, but right at the back of the record cupboard, I have a fantastic Jimi Hendrix album, with my two favorite songs 'Vodo child' and 'All along the watch tower' - my poor neighbours :D
moonlitdaydream 05-18-2003, 05:43 PM Hi everyone
I am suprized that no one mentioned the Beatles or Lennon. but of course thier is no comparison with that group of musicians or John Lennon in particular. Any one that knows music and takes it seriously, would no doubt rate John Lennon as the greatest musician/songwriter/permormer of all time. No one will ever surpass the Beatles. And 99% of artists got thier start by getting into the Beatles and Lennon. Greastest song? In My Life
and Strawberry Fields

I agree-I don't think it's 99% at all. I think that perhaps today's musicians who were around when the Beatles were around listened simply because it was popular at the time.

YOU'VE GOT TO BE CAREFULLY TAUGHT
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

oh don't get me started defending the beatles... :)
lennon was indeed brilliant, but i think that the beatles were as well. however i do agree that not 99% of all modern artists were influenced by them. perhaps elements of their work as filtered down through music of the last 40 years, but you'd be hard pressed to find consistent traces of them outside the 'pop music' realm.
my own musical tastes are pretty fluid but at the moment i'd have to say that 'this is a low' by blur is a strong favorite. that song makes me weak in the knees.
singalou 05-19-2003, 01:50 PM well im NOT a "tried and true" ELVIS fan....but really...would the evolution of rock as we know if today been possible without? I hardly think anyone would disagree...perhaps he was not the ONLY one, but definitely had a tremendous impact on the music we have today.
singalou 05-19-2003, 05:26 PM yes *smiles...i'll type the 'why', but have to do a bit later tonight...cause its too long for me to compose now...u know..have to run daughters to choirs concert...pick up son from baseball practice, go back to concert...AND find which road will get me there because the main one is closed, hehe. But for starters....Americans embraced Elvis because he 'embodied' the ideal of the 'american way'....classic 'rags to riches' story....plus in the latter 1950's young americans notions about being independent from parents, from religion, from the 'values' of that time...elvis became the 'king' of rock and roll, but also of the emerging youth culture because of HIS style...he was cool, a bit '****y', wore black leather...and combined white country with blues in a style never before know to man....the emergence of rock and roll.
melisande 05-19-2003, 05:41 PM Do you think that Shakira or Britney Spears has listened to Elvis???
WHO GIVES A RAT'S ***?

And here you have it in a nutshell.
This site's interesting and well, varied members, some who agree with one another, some who do not.
The reason why I like this place :D
As for music, I may have said before that I am a big fan of Northern Soul.
So my recommendation for a great track would be 'A Little Togetherness' by a band called The Younghearts.
It's a real floor shaker :)
singalou 05-19-2003, 06:22 PM *smiling here...yes we DO tend to get off subject but SOMEHOW=) we are all GROWING and learning here...and AL...im guessing...the Eagles...Hotel California? AND...not to stray too far off topic AGAIN:(...but i think most of today's stars DO listen to and receive something from the past...learn from it...transform it....some transformations, perhaps, would make our grandfathers roll in their grave...but elvis was thought by the communist to be the influence behind the raid on the berlin wall too....evil at best=). Thus is progress......and the beat goes on.

Embarassingly enough I bought the Justin Timberlake CD a month ago and its fantastic!

Jesse 05-29-2003, 11:28 PM "Doesen't anyone like the Beatles? I am amazed at yr responses. Am I am in the music biz as a promoter!!!!!!"
I LOVE the Beatles - I just love Pink Floyd a bit more *g*. I limited myself to one favorite because the original poster seemed to be indicating it. I could easily have put "Eleanor Rigby" in place of "Dust in the Wind." For that matter, I could have also put in Richie Havens' "Handsome Johnny."
In my opinion, the Beatles are the most influential rock group ever, bar none, and some of the most creative musicians in that genre. Rock would be very different today if they hadn't come along.
I'm 36, so my teen years were (unfortunately) in the 80's, when music really sucked. I spent my high school years listening to 60's and 70's rock instead, so my 48-year-old gf and I listened to the same music in our teen years. I can actually sing more songs from that era (including obscure ones) and quote more "classic rock" trivia than she can, believe it or not. It wasn't until midway through the 90's that I first started hearing new rock again that I liked - I try to pretend that 1982-1992 didn't exist *g*.
My musical tastes run all up and down the spectrum. I don't tend to care for electronica (except for when it's used in movies) and dislike most jazz that's been done since the 40's (especially atonal), but I like a little bit of just about everything else, from Mongolian traditional to Klezmer to Bluegrass to Ethereal Goth to Tin Pan Alley, etc. I'm particularly fond of popular music from 1890-1920. When I listen to MP3s or CDs, it isn't unusual for me to go from Godsmack to Cab Calloway to the Sound of Music soundtrack to the Sex Pistols to Die Dreisgoschenoper (Threepenny Opera), etc.
When it comes to Western Classical music, I either love it or am totally bored by it. I tend to favor the Russian and German composers more, and like the harder, more dramatic stuff best, though Pachelbel's Canon (definitely not a hard sound) is one of my all-time favorites. I just finished taking a grad class in Music Librarianship, in fact - the focus was mostly on Western Classical.
When it comes to playing instruments, though, I mostly stick to bluegrass and mountain music (I play banjo). If I branch out to another instrument in the future, I would like to learn flamenco guitar.

moonlitdaydream 05-30-2003, 12:55 PM Thanks Jesse for yr honest opinion. I too also enjoy various music genres. But, no one will ever or has ever topped the beatles, as far as music goes. Thanks for agreeing with me there.
By the way, the song kansas did; Dust in The Wind was written by a band from my home town. They were popular here with it, but sold it to Kansas.
TraptPoet 05-30-2003, 01:10 PM I have to agree with ANARCHIST's list of essentials and with NAFADDA with her emphatic choice......
BUT this one should settle it: (And you can ask any critic)
Best Song: SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT, by Nirvana
Best Band/Musician: NIRVANA
Best Lyricist: KURT COBAIN of Nirvana.
The Beatles are great, and so is floyd, zepellin, japlin, hendrix, lennon, elton john, the clash, the smiths, pearl jam, the cure, elvis costello, elvis presley, Eagles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and others....BUT these are only great exponets of the genre.
TO HAVE ACTUALLY CHANGED THE WAY MUSIC IS SEEN, AND TO HAVE ACTUALLY CHANGED THE STANDARDS IN WHICH MUSIC IS MEASURED..... ONLY ONE BAND, SONG, WRITER, AND MUSIC ERA CAN BE GIVEN THIS ATTRIBUTE..
that is Kurt Cobain, the band is Nirvana, the song is Smells Like Teen Spirit, the era is the early 90's
there you go, bring on the hate mail.....lol ;)
moonlitdaydream 05-30-2003, 03:22 PM And where did Nirvana get his inpiration from? Not everyone digs Nirvana. He may have appealed to a certain generation, but cannot measure up to the great ones before him. Sorry, Nirvana dosen't jive with everyone. I would neve4r buy his music.,
nafadda 05-30-2003, 04:22 PM hey TrapPoet....we do both agree GREAT music came out of Washington state,be it Pearl Jam or Nirvana....:)
Kurt might still be here if he would have got rid of that wife of his :(
I think Nirvana was great...and I like what's left of them,(Foo Fighters,DAve Groll is sooooo FUNNY,Gotta love those videos)
I do like many kinds of music,BUT......PEARL JAM ROCKS and EDDY VEDDER IS "THE MAN":D  ;) :)
Jesse 05-30-2003, 07:16 PM "By the way, the song kansas did; Dust in The Wind was written by a band from my home town. They were popular here with it, but sold it to Kansas."
That's very interesting - what's the name of that band? Did they put out any records?
To the Nirvana poster:
This is all IMHO, of course.
I really have to respectfully disagree with you there. Nirvana did help to pull rock out of the dead zone that was the 80s and early 90s, but their sound was hardly unique. Much of the "grunge" approach to fashion and music was simply a rehashing (watered down a bit) of late 70s punk - in fact, grunge is really just a punk/hard rock fusion, in many ways. In that sense, the Sex Pistols et al were much more original that Nirvana (even they had their influences). The Germs, the Dead Kennedys, and many others were doing such stuff long before Cobain came around.
I do like Cobain's music, but I would hardly say that it changed the way that music is viewed. I think that it did energize a younger generation that had grown up with a lot of crap in the 80s and early 90s, so to them it probably seemed highly original. When you look back through the history of rock as a whole (and the blues and other genres that led to its development), Nirvana isn't really that important, in the grand scheme of things.
- Jesse
Jesse 05-30-2003, 07:31 PM Sorry if I came across as a bit opinionated in those posts - on re-reading them, I realize that I may come across a bit too strong in them.
There was actually some music in the 80s that I liked, most of which can be found on the "best of the 80s" CD collections. The decade as a whole was (to me), though, sort of a low point in the history of rock music. I'm no authority, though - ultimately it's all a matter of taste *g*.
- Jesse
nafadda 05-30-2003, 08:39 PM Jesse you didn't come off as too opinionated at all....you just know how you feel and what you like....that's cool:cool:
we all know anyway that Neil Young is "the Godfather of Grunge"......RITFW
I do not like Nirvana and Pearl Jam
ummmmm,ok:confused:
one thing I LOVe about Eddie Vedder (besides the music and the fact that he cares about social and environmental issues )is that he doesn't give a rat's *** who doesn't like him or what he has to say, because he knows soooooo many people LOVE him anyway(kinda like me)
