Self Help BooksTyger74 05-31-2003, 11:31 PM Does anyone recommend any good books dealing with self help themes? Books by Dr. Wayne Dyer for example. southerngal 06-01-2003, 11:44 PM Hey Ty, Yeah, I'm reading a good one right now. I think I wrote about it on the thread about books, but its so good its worth talking about again. Its "Mars and Venus, Starting Over" by JohnGray. I think it can help anyone who has gone through a divorce or lost a spouse. And there is a part dedicated to women starting over and one for men starting over - how to go about healing your broken heart and moving forward. It talks about how many ways women "push love away" and how to deal with the past so you can find love again. Its just a good book and I'd recommend it to anyone. Southerngal Tyger74 06-02-2003, 12:17 AM South, Yes, I like Dr. Gray. I have two of his audio books. One is called Powertalk with Tony Robbins featuring Dr. John Gray and the other one is called "What your mother couldn't tell you and your father did not know". Any tips or ideas that you have that you can share with all of us about his ideas? southerngal 06-02-2003, 12:29 AM Yeah, Ty, in this book, he is basically saying we all need love, but sometimes after we've lost a loved one or endured a painful divorce or broken heart, that we find lots of "excuses" not to try again. I know its been true about me. I just filled my life up with doing so much for my kids and other people that I "didnt have time" for anyone. But Dr. Gray says we "need" to take care of ourselves first, and that its not selfish. Otherwise, all these other people or our children feel responsible for making Mom happy. It really has made alot of sense to me, because I have a tendency to put everyone else before me. I have a hard time doing anything for myself:confused: but I"m working on it. Southerngal Tyger74 06-02-2003, 01:13 AM Blondie, I remember Dale Carnegie. He wrote "How to stop worrying and start living". I also seen that book you were mentioning and I haven't browsed at it yet. melisande 06-02-2003, 01:38 AM you would do well to check your facts before posting. 'i'm ok, you're ok' was written by a pioneer in the field, dr. thomas a. harris, NOT the thomas harris who wrote 'red dragon', 'silence of the lambs', and 'hannibal'. big difference honey. my self-help book recommendation is 'Thou Shalt Not Be Aware: Society's Betrayal of the Child' by Alice Miller. a must-read for anyone with childhood issues that have not been dealt with. Nessa 06-02-2003, 03:29 PM anyone got any self help books for someone who's read ALL the self help books and is still really screwed up????:D Actually I can't remember the author but I found a GREAT book was "how to heal a hurtful relationship". I think the guy has a website. Let me see if I can find it when i get home later. Genevieve 06-02-2003, 05:13 PM Hello, Not certain what types of reading you enjoy, but I have also read many things by authors such as Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, and even The Celestine Prophesy books. Though these may not be considered to be "self-help", they do offer various perspectives and did open my eyes to certain things. One book I would highly recommend is called, In The Meantime by Iyanla VanZant (I may have spelled the last name wrong). If you get a chance to check any of them out, let me know what you thought of them. Take care, Gen Tyger74 06-02-2003, 05:18 PM Gen, Which books do you have by Deepak Chopra? Genevieve 06-02-2003, 05:43 PM Hello Tyger, I have read The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, and have copies of How to Know God: The Soul's Jouney into the Mystery of Mysteries and The Path to Love The latter two I have not read in-depth. I also have an audio tape collection of Chopra's entitled, SynchroDestiny: Discover the Power of Meaningful Coincidence to Manifest Abundance in Your Life which I have listened to, and is published by Nightingale/Conant. This publisher also publishes audio tape collections by Dr. Dyer and others as well. Not sure if they have a website or not. One line I do recall of Chopra's goes something like this.. "If you want to find love, be more loveable." I believe that is from The Path to Love I'm really not some kind of guru.. but those books and tapes were very helpful to me at a difficult time in my life. :) Gen singalou 06-02-2003, 10:51 PM Tyger...this is a good one for all those lovely self-defeating mind games we play at times=) Battlefield of the Mind...Winning the Battle in Your Mind by Joyce Meyer. Jannie 06-06-2003, 03:29 PM but written mostly with women and children in mind..... The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift by Gavin DeBecker, (not sure if Im spelling that correctly) A MUST READ for women and A MUST if you have small children or are planning to have a child. Dateline did a piece On Gavin a couple of years ago....he is very well known in the world of security and teaching children and women how to be safe in relationships and in life. They are fascinating, rivoting books that are easy to get into. |
