A few days ago, I heard that Air France and British Airway's beloved flagship..the Concorde will be going to retirement this year. This jet flies from NY to Paris in less than 8 hours. I forgot how fast they get there. The reason was the high cost of fixing the planes and other things. I personally think that rich investors should keep these planes going somehow. I hate to see something that has a rich history retire so fast. Here in Los Angeles, I heard that the Concorde landed here back in 1971(I think). Angelinos should know this one! I wouldn't mind using this supersonic jet as a means of transportation if money wasn't a problem. Heck, talk about super fast anti jet lag! LOL! :P

The Concorde could make it from New York to Paris in roughly 2 hours. The standard 747 makes it there in about 5.
The concorde traveled upwards of Mach 2, which is roughly 1300 miles an hour. (don't quote). The Standard 747 travels just a hair lower than Mach 1 (i think mach .8)
It costs about $10,000 to fly on concorde accross the pond, but unless you join the Navy, Marines, or Air Force. . you aren't likely to fly faster than the speed of sound. There you are traveling twice the speed of sound. Its really unfortunate that they're being retired. But it does cost a whole lot of money to fly and opperate those jets. They certainly did kick ***. It was always a dream of mine to fly in one. . .but i guess some dreams are unattainable.
But, one thing I can say is that in todays world, where engineers are constantly trying to figure out how to fly further faster, I have no doubt in my mind that in my life time we will finally figure out a cheap and easy way to flight as super-dooper-sonic speeds ;)
Do any of you watch the Discovery channel shows? Namely the "Exteme Engineering" show. About a month ago they had a show on there and they suggested a supersonic pipeline underneath the surface of the ocean, in which the train would travel at approximatly Mach 5. Using magnetic lift technology, it wouldn't run on tracks so the ride would be so smooth. It sounded like a good idea to me. . .Although, admittedly, i would be a little scared traveling that fast under water. . .but i'm sure it'd be alright.
Anyway, i'm going off on a rant here

Tall Guy, I used to watch Discovery a lot and love that channel, but haven't had time to watch any TV lately :D Sorry I missed that show tho.
Did they address the issue of the pressure involved if you were travelling under the ocean?? Just wondering.

A couple of weeks ago Richard Branson of Virgin was on tv here saying how he has offered to buy the concords from BA and continue flying them, however they are not willing to let him buy them. They are determined to put them out of action.
