What do you al do when you start to feel bloated? Sometimes when I get too hot my hands start to swell up and get all itchy and tingly. Anyway, I haven't figured out what the hell to do about it. Anyone have any pointers or suggestions?

Thanks

Steve

are you posting just to have you name on the board all the way up and down????

Shhhhhhh, quit bustin me out :)

Actually, this is something that I do suffer from. Its a pain in the ***. Its been unusually hot here in San Francisco these past couple of days. It was 89 in the city yesterday. having that kind of weather when you are coming off a cold spell is not cool.

I already drink tons of water every day. I drink on average about 6 of those 16 oz water bottle thingies a day. Which, i think is about 12 servings of water or something like that.

Anyway, anyone else have any suggestions. How about when you are already bloated?

Are your feet and abdomen swollen also, Steviepie? If so, I would go to see the doctor. At the least, maybe he can give you a prescription for a diuretic. Or you can go to Whole Foods and ask the folks in the vitamin and herb department for an herbal diuretic. Also, you can try a B-complex vitamin. Whatever you end up doing, you will also have to decrease your salt consumption. You can try NoSalt. It works as well for me as regular salt, though I know people who can't stand it.

Sorry to say this, but I am loving our heat spell!

You may need a diuretic. Try Lasix but drink plenty of orange juice or bloating will be the least of your worries. Trust me, I should know.

Lasix is a diuretic that's used by professional bodybuilders prior to contests so that they can appear alot leaner with very little water in their muscles.

Oh and btw, the Lasix can only be prescribed by your doctor, unless you but it from an underground source.

Oh, please, don't use any Lasix (furosemide) or other diuretics on your own! These are drugs that cause ion depletion (sodium and potassium) and you have to be careful about them.
Try drinking more of those isotonic drinks when it gets too hot, you are probably losing water and electrolytes (potassium, sodium) with your sweat and that might explain the swelling. If you take lasix, you will lose even more electrolytes and you may get worse. Diuretics work well for people retaining salt, but I don't think this is your case, although to be sure you would have to measure your tension and confirm you are not suffering from hypertension.
Sometimes swelling is caused by hormonal changes as it happens in many women, progesterone being a hormone that facilitates water retention, the mechanisms are very similar but the causes are completely different.

The only other advice I can offer other than what Patricia and Maria already suggested is to drink a cup of hot water with natural lemon juice squeezed in it, as soon as you wake up. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have more than one cup per day, if the bloating is taking awhile to come down.

Lemon is a natural diuretic.

It works for me, I hope it works for you, too.

Sincerely,

Yvonne

Thanks Yvonne,
I've read that somewhere before and completely forgot about that. I read that, other than your suggestion, drinking water with either lemon or orange juice squeezed in it (though lemon is the stronger of the 2) is also good. But personally, I think your idea is better since drinking that before bedtime would give it time to work in the body during rest.

MARIA:

You're right, I sit corrected. I apologize for suggesting a drug that, I forgot until I posted it, killed quite a few bodybuilders who used it and too much potassium at the same time. Potassium has to be replaced when using a diurectic and too many bodybuilders have taken in more potassium than the heart can handle.

I agree with Maria. You might be drinking too much water and draining yourself of electrolytes. But a lot of people have dependent swelling of the extremities during very hot weather. If you're okay the rest of time, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's just your hands, maybe you are getting into something that you're allergic to.

I agree with Smarsh and Maria, about steering clear of diuretics.
But you also mentioned itchyness, could it be some form of hives?
I get them alot when its hotter out or if my cloths are a bit tight, I even get them ocasionally in my throat!
Have you tried antihistimines?
It does sound like it may be an allergy.
