TONIGHT (Thursday the 4th) my 120-pound, 5-feet 7-inch 14 yo son with size 12 and growing men's shoe size, is playing his first High School football game (american football) !!!!!!!!!!!

His coaches whom I call behind their backs (and not lovingly) Coach Neanderthal and Cromagnum act like they are training these kids for the marine Corp.

Anyway, I do not know If I can watch my baby get beat up!!!!!!
:( He plays the position of Wide Reciever. I told him to run fast and dont get hurt. He just laughs at me. I WILL DIE if he gets hurt....This kid has already had a broken foot (his sister ran over it with her volkswagon!!! and a broken arm from running into a wall at school)

Okay any words of comfort out there from moms who have been through this and guys? HELP!!!

Wide receiver = he will get tackled. However, its a good position and an important one. But its not anywhere near as bad as a running back. Don't worry, just cheer him on and hope he kicks some *** and gets a touchdown or two.

He'll do great, I'm sure. The good thing about the coaches working them so hard is that they will have an easier time during the game. Heck, he might even score the winning touchdown, then think of how happy you'll be. :)

Thats true, thanks Romial, nice thought, the winning touchdown and his girlfriend is a majorette in the band!!! :)

And thanks Dshogun, I forgot about that, that the tougher the training, the easier the game...

He is just my baby and well its hard to watch someone ram into you baby!!!! lol

BUT I guess might help him be tougher later on in life because he is thinking of joining the military eventually. OH GOSH, why cant he just be still and stop making me worry!! lol

is get him on the basketball team! :D

I am an overprotective mom...my son (same age as yours) plays baseball and basketball! whew..but you know what? In all honesty, he has gotten hit smack in the eye with a baseball as it FLEW off the bat. His older brother had broken bones from baseball. He has gotten huge knots on the head from slamming down on the basketball court and one of his friends on the basketball team was knocked unconcious in a game and his nose was bleeding...(not from being hit on nose but from head hitting ground so hard!) scary!! So at least in football they have all that protective gear!

He will be fine! You will too!! :D Just don't be one of those mom's that gets into it on the sidelines! LOL! I hate those kind. I am so easy I find myself feeling bad for the other team if we are way ahead. lol...they give me looks in the stands when I say "awww" when the other team makes a mistake. :P

HAVE FUN AT THE GAME!

The thing is too, you know how boys are,....you gotta watch everything they do...DID YOU SEE THAT MOM??? I usually have my face covered or looking the other way so I don't have to see him smashed and BUT I always say YEAH IT WAS GREAT!! :)

well you are right about sports. My daughter hurt her ankle in volleyball last week, rolled it...so at least they have protection like you said.

My son is a skateboarder, broken wrist, broken elbow so far. You should see how high he goes, he jumps up on rails and slides down them, flys in the air and flips his board. At contests I am always very nervous. People ask me if I'm afraid he'll get hurt. I say no, I'm afraid he won't do his best.

tonight, in his football career and in his future endeavours. He's learning team work and discipline. (And he's using some of that energy that gets stored from sitting at desks all day). Just remember when he's getting hit and tackled, he has his protective gear on. He's exercising the preventative measures he's learned in practice.....

He's going to do Great and I hope ya'll win.

You will handle it well to Mom.....

Like swan's son, he could've decided to get into skate boarding.

I think that's the #1 sport that contains the most injuries...

You hear about SOOOOOOOOoooooooo many people getting injured from skateboarding.

Gosh....I have a 12 year old who is in his 4th season of a Youth Football League (full tackle). He started when he was 9. I was so scared, and hoped he wouldn't like it and continue in his little league baseball (which he still does ) But he LOVED it and so I let him continue although I kept telling him I wanted to put him in a bubble. I just pray alot. So far he hasn't been hurt, but we know it is a possibility....but so is riding down the street on a bicycle...but like I said, he enjoys it so much....kinda like I enjoy riding my horse, knowing I could break my neck with one fall...but I love it, even after being stepped on, run through tree branches and kicked in the mouth.

Our first game is this Saturday....GO COUGARS!!

Up here, the sport of choice for most boys is HOCKEY. Some parents put toddlers in skates -- the kids can skate before they can walk properly!

Yeah, they've got protective padding, and the play is "no body contact" up to a certain age (14?) but there are still plenty of injuries. I remember going to school with 12 and 13 yr old boys who already had partial dentures to replace adult teeth knocked out playing hockey!

WELL HIS TEAM WON AND HE IS OKAY, BUT one little boy on the team broke his arm !!! :( Thanks for all the advice. :) and Romial in answer to your question, he did GREAT...He never got tackled but he tackled some people and he is the one that tells the quarterback the plays so he did good on that too. :) AND HIS girlfriend ran up to the fence after the game and gave him a hug through the fence!!! He was nervous about playing in front of her. lol

I had my son in wrestling for one season. At the first competition (which lasted all day) I saw a kid get his arm AND leg broken by another kid IN ONE MOVE! That was it for me. After the competition was over, I took my son out of wrestling. He's skinny as a pencil (genetics on his dad's side) and it would have been a matter of time before someone snapped him in half and I'd be changing his colostomy bag forever.

However, I DO believe sports are so important and teach kids lessons on many levels, such as how to do their personal best, how to work with others' strengths and weaknesses to achieve a goal, and how to have fun doing something healthy and good for their bodies. My son was always kind of hyper so I put him in soccer at age 5. He's now 14, and has been on select soccer teams since he was 8. Soccer might not seem so dangerous, but the thing about it is, when you've got an offensive front lineman running at the goal like a runaway train, and you're a skinny little defensive player trying to stop him (literally by putting yourself in harm's way) as is my son, you can really get the sh!t knocked out of you! I've seen my son get knocked into, fly up in the air, do a somersault, and come down flat on his back! The older they get, the more violent they get, and with soccer, the only protective gear they have is shinguards.

Anyway, such is the life of a sports mom. I get a few more gray hairs with every game, but when my son comes off of the field, sweaty, breathing hard, and smiling, I figure I'd rather take my chances with sports than with an idle kid left with too much time and energy on his hands, turning towards drugs!
