BearsAngel 10-03-2003, 08:39 AM Extreme Makeover has become the favorite show for Dave and I. A guy who practically faints at the sight of blood races to the TV on Thursday night to sit with me and watch people's lives changed through plastic surgery. Yes, there are a lot of bad things you can say about it, but the bottom line is that they are picking people who really need the work done and who have been badly treated and who hate themselves because of getting the short end of the stick genetically. It's a rush to watch people laugh and stand in front of a mirror crying about how they look and saying "thank you" over and over.
Next week they are going to have a woman who looks far older than her husband. I wonder if she really is older. She looks awful and I know the work she will have done will make a big difference in her self-esteem. It will be interesting to see what they do for her.
This past week they had a woman who was teased so badly about looking like a witch that she stopped going out and her children got in fights at school defending her. Also there was a young man with a crooked nose, receeding chin and snaggly teeth who couldn't stand to look in a mirror. They didn't turn them into movie stars, but the difference in their looks improves them 100%. They can look in the mirror now and you should have seen the woman's husband as he looked at his wife. He loved her skinny, flat-chested and hook-nosed and now he thinks she's just amazing. :)
Normally I hate reality TV because someone always gets hurt or made to feel bad for the entertainment of others. This show tries to make people feel better about themselves and is about positive changes. It also shows what cosmetic surgery is meant to do and that it is far more than just face lifts and tummy tucks. It can literally change someone's life. On this show the tears are those of joy.
I can't say that I would ever have it done, but I am going to look into liposuction for Dave because he carries all his weight in his gut and it hurts him physically with aches and pains and he is at risk right now to develop diabetes.
What do you think about makeovers for those who need it or for yourself?
Peace,
Jane (56) who loves Dave (30)
Maria 10-03-2003, 08:47 AM I'm completely for.
Only people who have carried such a big complex or worked with them can really evaluate their need.
Very easy to criticize when you are able to live like you are. Years of therapy don't work for many of those people and they are practically "born again" after such interventions. No prejudice (like the one against esthetic surgery) is worth a wasted life.

Lorena 10-03-2003, 02:53 PM is also in the health chat section.....not stories on it but asking others their thoughts.
VenusScorpio 10-03-2003, 04:47 PM My Aunt told me about this show last week. She wants to get on but needs another to do it with? She asked me if i'd try to get on too. I said, no no no! I'm just really scared to death of going under the knife so to speak and anesthesia. But, I'm excited if she does go for it.
Maria 10-03-2003, 04:54 PM Venus, do you have to be two or is it your aunt who doesn't want to go all alone?
VenusScorpio 10-03-2003, 05:10 PM I've never watched the show , yet. So, I'm not sure If they do "doubles", but knowing her she wouldn't want to do it alone.
Now, I have watched a makeover show (not sure of the name) in which they do two people at a time, friedns, mom & daughter, boyfriend&girlfriend, ect.
swanqueen 10-03-2003, 07:19 PM First of all I am totally NOT against plastic surgery.
And I agree these people on this show are more extreme than some of us.
But what about the rest of us homely people that don't get on the show and don't have money?
Don't we deserve love?
Lorena 10-03-2003, 10:21 PM your sense of humor is what makes you beautiful........you are to cute.:)
swanqueen 10-03-2003, 10:59 PM Hey Lorena I'm serious. :)
Lorena 10-03-2003, 11:03 PM I don't know who's worse me or you?........Woman you look back in that mirror because as far as I can see even with curlers and all...your an attractive woman!
PoliteSuccubus 10-03-2003, 11:05 PM If I went I'd want my boobs reduced to a reg size (where I could go shopping for bras instead of special ordering) and for the scar on my belly to be corrected. When I was 11 I had surgery and it healed skin-to-muscle instead of skin-to-skin and when I was preg with my daughter the doctor said there was a good chance I'd herniate.
Anything else would be optional. I'm just very plain looking and so don't need any other work.
swanqueen 10-03-2003, 11:15 PM I have a small (lol) list of nips and tucks I'd like as well.
swanqueen 10-03-2003, 11:30 PM yes a lady at work had it done, insurance paid for it, she looks GREAT.
Polly 10-04-2003, 07:41 PM BA this is a great thread! I was afraid to read it, because your usual stance on plastic surgery is not to do it but to be happy with who you are, however I can see how in an extreme situation you would endorse plastic surgery.
I'm shallow and vain, so I endorse all types of plastic surgery! :D Tummy tucks, boob lifts, lipo, varicose vein removal, nose jobs, gimme the works! Just make me the bionic woman! Who cares if I'm more plastic than organic tissue?
My friend, who suffered from low self-esteem due to extremely small breasts, got a breast aumentation. They took fat from another part of her body and injected it into her breasts, and it stayed there. She has "D's" now. Apparently the surgery is the safest there is as far as increasing breast size.
PoliteSuccubus 10-04-2003, 09:08 PM My old job would have covered it, but I am currently jobless.
If I get a job that will cover it again I prob will get it done via my insurance, but will take vaction time to do it on. It feels wrong somehow to take time off for personal issues, which I feel this is.
I've been out of work since July 1; I quit my last job and had one waiting for me...but surprize surprize, when I went to get it the guy who was gonna hire me was gone and the new guy didn't want me.
Then I hurt my leg and need to rest it.
BearsAngel 10-04-2003, 10:35 PM Polly, I am against plastic surgery for vanity only because any time you undergo total anesthesia you run the risk of complications which include stroke and death. James Brown's wife died on the table having yet another face lift. It's a serious surgery and needs to be approached with caution.
I do think people need to be more comfortable with themselves -- if there is not a physical defect that becomes the focus and makes you miserable. I have heard of beautiful women who had a number of surgeries trying to be even more beautiful because they couldn't believe in themselves. Sometimes instead of a tuck you need a shrink.
As I age I see more and more of my years on my face. I don't wrinkle. I have the kind of skin that becomes very soft looking and is almost as bad as wrinkles. I can't say that in 15 years I won't want surgery, but I'm also hoping techniques and anesthesia will have really improved.
I wish you luck in your quest to be the bionic woman. I hope your bank account can keep up with all the work you want done. You are gonna make your surgeon a very happy man. :)
Hugs,
Jane
Polite....I had a breast reduction surgery done when I was 20 yrs old. I was this skinny girl with boobs that needed to be hauled around in a shopping basket. (I'm kidding, of course) I managed to pass this trait along to my beautiful daughter, who also had the surgery done at the age of 20. Both times it was covered by insurance. I don't feel that it's just cosmetic, those things were painful to lug around. Not to mention horrible for self esteem. I have always been thrilled with the results. And, the surgery did not prevent me from nursing four babies, either. Both of us look more in proportion, and feel SO much better mentally and physically.
BA, I love that show, it is too cool. It is wonderful to see how happy those people are. I've only seen the show a couple times, but it always brings a big smile to my face to see their joy. The dental work they do is amazing, too! It would be awesome to just hand yourself over to someone and say "fix me all up, please!!!" heee.

swanqueen 10-05-2003, 11:22 AM Ok if we're confessing here. About 20 years ago... well I was married to a YM who had a crush on a beautiful woman at work with a brick sh*t house bod. I had nursed my children and I swear to you my breasts looked like something out of National Geographic, you know those African women that are just flaps of skin dangling where boobs used to be?
Well at that time it only cost $2000 so I put it on my charge card. I went in with a picture of me before nursing and I said "make me like I was" and he did. It is so perfect that no one on earth could tell. In fact I never even told my third husband. My gynocologist (sp?) said I should never tell any one, no one would ever know. I didn't get made large or anything. Just back to how I was.
My guy doesn't know this. But his dad is a plastic surgeon so I don't think he'd have a problem with it. I mean women like me put food oh his table all his life :D He may guess when I'm 70 and still got "perky" boobs though :)
Oh Swan, you are so funny!!!! Lol!!!
Hey, it's been so long for me that I forget that I had it done. It never even occured to me to mention it to my Mike. Just on this last visit, he finally noticed.....he never even noticed before....he was totally blown away. I mean, he didn't care, but was just shocked that he didn't know something about me. Yeah, if done well, you can hardly even tell.
I say good for you! If it's affordable, and you can do it, do it! It's gotta be for the right reasons tho. And yes, there is ALWAYS a risk.
Had I not gotten that surgery before babies, and THEN nursed them, man, I'd have boobs down to my ankles. Thankfully they survived the nursing intact. :)

swanqueen 10-05-2003, 03:21 PM In my case someday there will be a coffin filled with slush and two silcone "blobs" floating around, probably til the year 4000.
