John-311 12-14-2003, 09:10 AM 81.)I'm terrified of crabs (the ocean kind, not the high school locker room kind, eeww, thats gross).
This summer I wanted to send seashells to someone who lives far from the ocean for their B-day. So I swam out to a rock where the good shells are - where there are also tons of crabs - armed with a broken hockey stick for protection. I was all nerves and any crab that came within five feet of me was instant seafood salad. I got the shells though. I felt like Indiana Jones with the snakes.

85. I had my 15 minutes of fame in 1996 when a student put LSD in my drink, and I was rushed to the hospital. I made the national news and the front page of my newspaper, and every talk show (except Oprah) wanted me on to discuss the sordid details (which I did not as I am a privat person). My friend nearly ran off the road when she heard it on the radio in Missouri, and I had former students calling me from all over the states hoping I was OK. One, who was a Navy Seal, heard it and wanted to come home " and flatten the guy". I was forced to give a TV/news press conference to tell exactly what happened, which then was played on some of those shows even a year later without my permission. There was a trial, but all the student got (besides expulsion) was a 2 year probation and he had to write a letter of apology, as the lab had thrown away the evidence by mistake so there was no submissible evidence. In truth, I wish those 15 minutes of fame happened in another venue!!!

Dan_Shues 12-14-2003, 08:29 PM 98) I never missed a day of school from the grade six, all the way to my next to final semester of college.
The only reason I missed that day in college? Well, like now, I was working at the college in the IT Department. The college was (and still is for the most part) in dire financial trouble...and on a morning like two weeks before Thanksgiving, they fired 35 people. One of them, was a friend that worked in web design department. He would often come over for lunch and me, him and two other coworkers would play multiplayer games in the office...
That day, I skipped my afternoon class and we all went out to lunch one last time.

Jannie 12-14-2003, 09:37 PM 99. I once went on a 5-mile hike up in the mountains in Washington State. Once we got to our campsite, there were only us (we had another couple with us) and some other people camped at the bottom of a some shale rock on the other side of the lake. We thought what a dumb place for them to be. In the middle of the night, there was a rock slide, but it was small and they moved their tent. :)
It started to rain the next morning and poured for 3 days. We packed everything up and hiked 5 miles down in the pouring rain. I had to go to the bathroom, and so on the way down veered off in the woods. EVER TRIED TO get wet jeans and thermal underwear up after it is so wet you can wring water out of it????
My friend had to help me and we started laughing so hard we were crying, but we finally managed to get them up but never zipped. lol.
Jannie 12-14-2003, 09:43 PM 101. I was once in a motorcycle accident. I was a passenger, we were in front of a semi truck and hit loose gravel, lost control and flipped over. Burned my leg by the knee, ripped my pants on the knee, grass burn on the knee, and sore, but that was it. Then it came a storm and we got rained on all the way home. The guy that I was riding with hands were almost frozen to the bars by the time we got back to college.

RobsGirl 12-14-2003, 10:05 PM 2. I do not believe in seat belts. When I was pregnant with my third child I was in a major accident driving home with a friend. We hit ice and she let go of the wheel. We spun out and were hit by a state utility truck. I was not wearing my seat belt and was able to roll into the middle as we spun and wrapped my legs around the gear shift. The front of the truck was literally IN the front seat. Had I been wearing my seat belt? I'd either be dead or in a wheelchair right now and I most certainly wouldn't have my son. Thus, I do not wear seat belts. I've only been ticketed for it once and when I fought it in court, I won.

Genevieve 12-17-2003, 05:43 PM 67. I had three pregnancies in two years.. all pregnancies were somewhat dangerous for me, as I developed high blood pressure with each of them, and had to be watched closely. My first baby was born prematurely (7 mos.) and only lived one day. That was the worst heartbreak of my life, nothing before or since has ever hurt so much.
RobsGirl 12-17-2003, 06:10 PM 68. Speaking of pregnancies. . .I had placenta previa with all four of my pregnancies. That's practically unheard of and I ended up having to go through all sorts of tests like some guinea pig because the doctors just couldn't understand how it could happen with all four. The first child had been swallowing blood for 3 days, was swollen and had to have stomach pumped, was about 2 weeks early and was super tiny, but not preemie, she wore cabbage patch clothes, lol, the second child had the cord wrapped around her neck, didnt' want to come out and had myconium staining and rapid breathing. She was 9 pounds and was in the nursery for a few days with the 1-5 pound babies, looked like a monster beside them. I felt like conquering the world after the third delivery compared to the other two, but then The third child was severely jaundice and you know how that put jaundice babies in the incubator with Velcro patchs over their eyes and private areas to protect them from the lights, well he actually RIPPED THE GLASSES OFF. The nurses said they never had seen a baby do that EVER and so we got no sleep making sure he didn't do it again, a 24-hour watch, and the only thing that made him quit screaming and crying was playing Big Band music in his incubator.....so needless to say by the time he got well, they had to wheel me out in a wheelchair, I coudl barely walk and I was crying hysterically from exhaustion. lol
whiterose 12-17-2003, 07:43 PM 70. Aww Genevieve, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your first baby! I lost my first one, too, but it was very early on in the pregnancy. Like Jannie, I did not go into natural labor with my other two -- both were induced.

Hey for those of you who don't know, it is just etiquette in Texas to pull over to the right and let semi's by on the road, so they don't have to slow down or just basically get out of the way when you see one speeding up there. You will be going down a highway in Texas and the semi just has a clear shot, even the police do it, its just what we do.

whiterose 12-19-2003, 06:28 AM 87. My first husband seems to live in a state of denial. On our honeymoon, he was the only person who did not exit the water when a 7 ft shark was spotted swimming nearby. He remained on his raft while the shark swam right beside him!
But, he was also the same guy who refused to believe that Muhammad Ali was standing right next to us in line at the cinema in Louisville, even though Louisville is Muhammad Ali's home town AND even after people started asking him for autographs.

90. On the maternal side of the family, my great-great-great grandfather was a full blood Cherokee Indian who married a white woman (scandalous back then) and they owned a general store, .....on the paternal side of the family, my great-great uncles came from England, there were 5 brothers, went to the Carolinas and married 5 Cherokee women, then got ran out of there for some reason to Texas. lol

In central Texas at least, it's also customary to pull over to the right for anyone that wants to get by on a two-lane road, since there aren't too many straight stretches where you can pass. I've seen several people who weren't familiar with the tradition get people upset at them without even knowing why. :p

94. I once was in a volunteer amateur dramatics group, and played a small part in Humpty Dumpty for a local theatre :)
95. When I was 20, I lived with my brother and his first wife, who owned a rather large horse ranch.
One night I had a young man over that I had the hugest crush on and had finally gotten the chance to "have him all to myself", as he visited me while my brother and his wife were out on the town with friends.
A small wind storm kicked up as we were lounging in the living room having a couple of beers when a cop knocked on the door.
Three of my brothers horses had gotten out and they were running amuck all over the neighborhood.
It was up to me to get the dang horses.
(there were no cell phones back then for me to call my brother).
Well, this young man that I had over was a bonafied "city-boy" and had never even ridden a horse, let alone chase three of them down.
Well, I grabbed the bridles and off he and I ran after these VERY large Tennessee Walkers.
We found them, of all places, running around the track at the high school and the three of us, (the cop decided to join in), ran round and round this track after these horses trotting along as if on a casual trek in the country.
As soon as I would get close enough to get the bridle on them, they would raise up, whinnie like he_ _ and bolt.
Scared the HECK out of my city-boy, (and the cop too, I think)!
LOL
It wasn't easy, but I was able to bridle each one and my city-boy, the cop and I trotted all three horses back to the ranch.
That young man told me it was the most exciting date he ever had and we ended up together for almost a year.
Dabrake 12-19-2003, 09:35 PM Hehe...lol...Sage. Good story.
96. I've also chased horses, pigs, and cows all around my neighborhood.

Genevieve 12-19-2003, 10:14 PM Sage, whenever my horses got loose, we'd simply go out there with apples or carrots, and call them.. as soon as they saw what we had, they'd come to us! LOL Even my then 7 year old daughter would grab one by the halter, and he'd follow her like a puppy. :)

Yep, Genevieve, that would have normally been the case, but with the wind storm that night, these horses were full of spirit!
Funny how storms bring that out in them.
Glad that kind of thing didn't happen too often while I lived there.
They sure were beautiful horses though....
Jannie 12-19-2003, 11:14 PM 97. My mom used to make her own butter and my job was to take turns churning it. I still have the bottom part of the churn, but no one has located the top yet.
Also, on a side note...I used to go with her to milk our one dairy cow in the mornings. She would make me stand behind her as we walked through the grass to the little barn in case there was a snake or something on the path. Once when I was about 6, outside the barn there was a rattlesnake and King snake fighting. I said KILL THEM, and she said no, the King snake kills poisionous snakes, don't ever kill one of those. She told me we would go milk the cow and when we came out the rattlesnake would be dead. I was terrified, but when we came out, SURE NUFF (as we say in texas) the rattlesnake was dead. :)

Dabrake 12-20-2003, 12:48 AM 99. I once(about 12 years ago) had to kill a rattlesnake that was in my back yard (cause there were no king snakes around). I was afraid he would get my dogs(I had 3 german shepherds at the time) and so I shot it with my 22, had a couple of neighbor boys help me skin it cause I wanted to keep the skin.....but when I stretched it out on the board, it was so full of holes since I really wanted it to be dead.:D
I did that all while my husband was at work. He about died laughing when he saw it.

whiterose 12-20-2003, 08:49 AM 100. As a little girl, I took piano lessons. I always walked home by cutting through backyards since it was quicker. One time I attempted to exit my piano teacher's backyard through her gate, which was vine covered, heard a hissssss, and looked straight into the face of a snake. I have no clue what kind of snake it was. Who cares?? -- all I know is that I didn't like it! But, I turned around and ran all the way home the long way, even though it took twice as long to get home.

Dabrake 12-20-2003, 01:58 PM 2. I talked earlier about having to kill a rattlesnake.....well, I actually had snakes as pets while growing up. A king snake, a whip snake, and yes a rattlesnake(my dad was a snake hunter). The rattler used to sit in a wooden box cage on a piano in our small foyer right next to the front door, and would rattle when someone came in the doorway and stood. Well, my dad put a white mouse in the cage to feed it.....several weeks went by without the snake eating it......so the mouse actually took a bite out of the snake and killed it!

I'm full blooded Albanian and used to go to Albanian picnics when I was a kid. There families would get together and roast whole pigs and lambs, dance in big circles holding hands to a live band, and try and match up their children with other Albanians.
My cousins and I used to tell the bartender that we needed beer for our uncles, then go into the woods, shake them up, and squirt them on eachother. There were also fun games for the kids, like races and such.
When I think of my childhood, I have to smile. I wish I could have passed some of that culture on to my own kids, but the family get togethers died with my grandmother 14 years ago.
Oh, and I know a few workd in Albanian, mostly bad ones. <wink>

Jannie 12-20-2003, 06:58 PM 6. I used to live in a very culturally diverse neighborhood in Seattle. The people behind us were Spanish, the people beside us were Vietnamese, In front of us were Cambodians and Philipinos.
The Spanish and Philipinos had constant birthday parties, and we got invited to the Philipino parties all the time because they had 2 little girls our girls ages. It was fun. The Vietnamese beside us had a teenage daughter who babysitted for us. Their names were Mi (me) Ti (tea) mie (MY) and ANDY. LOL The Cambodians didnt speak a word of English and had a herd of kids and when I had garage sales, they swarmed on me like bees and I ended up just giving it all away. lol
whiterose 12-20-2003, 07:30 PM 7. One of my most favorite memories when I was a little girl was spending time with my "Pappaw". He was my great-grandfather and was the only male grandparent I ever knew. Both my grandfathers died either before I was born, or shortly afterward.
I loved my Pappaw. He loved me and we had lots of fun together. Sometimes we'd go out together at night to catch nightcrawlers that we'd use as fish bait the next day.
I loved watching my Pappaw shave with the straight razor. He always did that at the kitchen table right after he had breakfast. He drank his coffee from a bowl. Don't ask me why he had such peculiar habits, but he did.
On Sundays, he'd get his car out of the garage and drive it a quarter of a mile to the small grocery store in town. It was the only time he ever drove that car. Some of the local elderly gentlemen hung out at that grocery sitting near the coal stove, and telling tall tales. They would give me candy and tease me about cutting off my thumb which was always in my mouth (no kidding please -- I was only about 5 yrs old).
He died at the age of 88 when I was 10 years old, but I am so fortunate to have so many memories of him.

I went for a test to work for a bank once, and at the end of the test they asked me what job I would like, I was the only person ever to have scored 100% seemingly!:D
Okay -- that does it -- one of us was switched at birth!

Including a completely anonymous vehicle chosen at random in a parking lot 13 years ago by my ex's brother, to test my memory for number sequences. He has since forgotten that he ever did this; I am stuck with the licence number in my head! Also my ex-husband's social insurance number, which I haven't needed to know since 1986.
