101 Things You Didn't KNow About US!

I thought it would be interesting for us to list things about US!

When we reach 101 posts about us, we'll just start over again.
All you need to do is list one thing about yourself that you think is interesting and that we may not know about you.

Please feel free to list as many little tid-bits about yourself that you like, but please do it one post at a time.

Okay, I'll start with the first one.

1. I am Dyslexic

2. I have almost died three times...at birth, age 12 and age 32.

3. At age 16, I hitch hiked across country from Northern Ohio to Athens, Georgia with truckers.

4. I'm allergic to yellow food/drugs dye. Tartrazine is the only one I was tested for, to be more specific.

Any drug or food artificially colored in yellow makes a part of my body, usually eyes, but eventually my upper lip, swell.

5. I placed a child for adoption when I was much younger....

6) I have developed, caught, or however you get it, a seizure disorder.

7) I have 4 piercings :D .........

not including my ears, have 9 in them 6 inna left an 3 inna right :D ........

8. I used to have very long hair close to my arse(Took me 5 yrs). I also had dreadlocks before. I changed my hair color so many times from brown, light brown, reddish brown, light blonde, and platinum white.

9. I sailed solo (36'er) from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Bermuda (~860 NMi).

10) I've been arrested twice but never charged with anything.

13. I've never done anything interesting.

14. I suffer from severe Panic Disorder, (panic attacks), and they are especially bad while driving. I CANNOT get onto the freeways somedays as it is so bad.

15. In the early 90's I was a romance novelist.

18. I can't believe I'll tell you! The whole world! I once cheated on the train fare in Japan and was taken to the office, to pay a fee. I never felt so embarrassed again in my life!

20. I was once smacked upside the head by a waitress in a restaurant in Nuremburg, Germany,(late at night) cause I was falling asleep at the table. (1972)

21. I left my first marriage by never coming home from vacation with my two small children.

22. I am adopted and found my birth-family in January of 1996.
It's a long story, but I now wish I hadn't found them.

Some Advice
DO NOT go looking for your birth-family unless you are in a VERY secure and stable place in your life.
You never know what you might find and it very well could be something that you do not want to be associated with or make part of your life.

23. I bought a small hot chocolate at Gloria Jean's and paid with a $10 bill. The lady gave me back $9.90 rather than $7.90 so I counted my change and gave her back the $2. The 90 cents was placed on the tip jar. :D

24. I'm allergic to most plants and my dad was a florist. . ..go figure.

25) I was once permanently banned from a bowling alley following a bar fight.

26) I used to be extremely myopic, and wore contact lenses from the age of 12 -- until I had Lasik surgery, and now have 20/20 vision.

27. I have seen George Thorogood twice, and both times got so smashed I threw up, at the concerts. George rocks. One burbon, one scotch, one beer. Ok George, if you say so:D

29. I had a stalker for a three year period.

30. I have a severe case of "lazy-eye" in my right eye and also have a bad astigmatism.
Because of my lazy-eye, people always think I am looking over their shoulder.
I wear tri-focals, but don't care them much.

52) When I was a kid I fell asleep in the stylist's chair while getting a perm. I'd just come back from an all-night party at my church.

53. In Junior High and High School I avoided math like the plague. I ended up teaching Algebra and Trigonometry to adults in trade school.

I double-majored in college.

55) In 1997, when my union took us all out on strike, I went into a big panic about money -- and decided to take on another job. I found work within 2 days, and worked for the three-month duration as a cab driver -- on the night shift.

56. I speak fluently 5 languages, Japanese, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and I can understand Luxembourgish enough to live.

I love snow.

58) I had a job for a month selling cable television subscriptions door-to-door by myself in bad neighborhoods in South Forth Worth.

59. I have been married twice and both guys were named Michael.

60. We own a race car, and on the weekends I pack up my kids, and go drag racing. :eek:

61. I once played (in a band) to a crowd of 1,000 very, very rowdy bikers. It was the most exciting night of my life! :D

62. When eating a meal, I always finish my serving of one food (like, mashed potatoes) before I start eating the next item (like, green beans).

63. I was born about 2 1/2 to 3 months premature. With no complications even though my birth weight was 2 lb's 7 oz. and dropped to 1 lb. 13 oz.

66. I did some modeling in my younger days. A few tv commercials and some print ads. Only local stuff but it was fun to wait for my commercial to come on tv with a group of friends.

67. I played on a club field hockey team as the goalie and when we played the US National team players, I only gave up one goal & got a compliment from the head coach.

And Sage...I hate pumpkin pie too! (as well as watermellon...my mom calls me the anti-American)

I have been given gifts by airline companies about four times for helping passengers with some kind of health problem, including a patient with hypertension who might have developed a stroke if not treated on time... :)

71. I got the lead in my high school's production of "Up the Down Staircase." I was the Teacher (can't remember her name, but she was played by Sandy Dennis in the movie). I was only a sophomore, but had such a strong reading presence, I beat out a bunch of senior girls for the part! :)

72) I was almost suspended from school in 5th grade for wearing a grim reaper costume on halloween. We were allowed to wear costumes, but someone decided that mine was inappropriate. :rolleyes:

73. I got suspended for fighting with my best friend over a guy in 9th grade and went to in-school suspension high as a kite all three days.

74) When I go hoarse (like I am now)...I sound lower than Bowser from Sha-Na-Na

74. I starred in our Senior musical - Once Upon A Mattress as Queen Aggravain.

76. I have never met my birth father..not even sure if he is still alive. I did talk to him on the phone about 6 years ago. He sounded very nice but I am chicken to meet him yet afraid how sad I will feel if he dies and I never do.

I was the star of a movie/TV Yucatecan beer commercial in my bikini on the beach of Isla Mujeres in the Mexican Caribbean. I got so drunk on the beer that we had to keep drinking (they would open a new bottle for each scene--couldn't let that good stuff go to waste!) that I refused to shoot the scene where I was supposed to swim with the giant turtles because they were penned up for the tourists' amusement. Viva turtles' rights!!!

78. I took piano lessons for years and STILL can't play the piano!!

79. One of my earliest jobs was selling encyclopedias door to door. I starved.

80. I'm a natural blonde and have colored it auburn for years.

98. I used to beat up all the little boys on the playground during recess.

I was in a comedy film when I was in my twenties. It was filmed in California and was produced by a Filipino production company. It was a blockbuster hit in the Philippines and is still shown on t.v. there. My name was on the credits in all the newspaper ads and posters for the film. I never went to see the film as I was shy in those days and was too embarrassed to go into the theaters in San Francisco - I was afraid the other movie goers would recognize me:rolleyes:

I was told that Don Johnson (pre Miami Vice days) and Davy Jones (of the music group the Monkees) were both in that film.

100) I have double-jointed thumbs too!

6. When I was very young, I used to watch alot of Benny Hill late at night even though it was too raunchy.

7. Seven, how appropriate, Im the seventh child of 7 children. I have 2 brothers, 4 sisters.

Until the age of 6, I lived in a 4 room shack with a hole in the living room floor, tar paper for a wall on the back bedroom, a pump in the kitchen for water and an outdoor toilet. I never knew I was poor. :)

9. I worked in a funeral home doing make up when I was in high school.

11) My daughter was born a month late an was breech right up until the day she was born, she turned by herself an arrived in time for tea :) ......................... She still has trouble deciding what to wear, turns up when the kettle is on and is always late :)

12. I make an excellent broccoli casserole. Only dish I make that my kids rave about.

13. I am the only one out of all of my friends who has not been arrested. In their late teens, it seems they always in the wrong place at the wrong time.

14. I am a sentimental slob. I cry when people win on The Price Is Right (American game show for you non-Americans) I refuse to see movies if I know in advance they are sad. I have not seen Steel Magnolias or Terms of Endearment etc etc. I cry too much. My kids will always look over at me "yep...she's crying"

15. The only two movies to make me get a tear in my eye: Ghost and The Nutty Professor.

16) I've only turned on the television once or twice in the last several months.

17) I wrote an 80-something page thesis on how television commercials effect children's play styles & what they play with.

18. I was very popular among my Brazilian patients because I rarely gave them injections.

I would insist on oral treatment as much as possible (if no nausea, no vomiting and no emergency).

They called me by my first name and in the diminutive form. That made of me Dr. Lourdinha (my name is Maria de Lourdes). :D

19. I once jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.......

My husband and I ate dinner with Frank Zappa.

My 14-year-old son had open-heart surgery when he was a year old. I called all over the United States until I found the best surgeon available. (He's the same surgeon who ended up repairing Schwartzenegger's heart)

Those times are behind me now, thank God.

23) I owned an Afghan Hound, named Lord Elrond of Rivendell. :D :D I rescued him when he was 2 years old and held him when he was put to sleep at the age of 9 1/2 :)

24. I was raped the second week of my freshman year in college.
It was a private Christian college - being the girl, I was grounded to campus for "enticing" the bastard and nothing happened to him because HIS parents had just donated new goal posts and stuff for the football/soccer fields.

(Time proved the best revenge. He didn't quit doing what he was doing and finally he ran into the wrong woman. She doused him in the groin with a pot of hot coffee giving him three degree burns where the sun doesn't shine. . .)

I have the weirdest sensation when someone gets close to it. I have told my family about it and found out my mother and my younger sister have the same problem.

26. I have a fake front tooth from a biking accident when I was 12...I fell 15 feet into a stream and it knocked my face for a good one. I went and got a root canal and didn't lose the tooth until I was 26.

I drove to meet friends who went camping...this was over a 24 mile long bridge and dark , foggy country roads:cool:

I can shoot a rifle and even enjoy it.

I once spent a little over a month in Hawaii on the big island and on Mauii, lived with Hawaiian families, learned to fish like the old ways, make food like the old ways, hula, and all about the culture. Went to the Governer's luau and also met an old lady that told us stories of way back when and hulaed for us, she was over 100. We were taken places tourist do not go.

When we were fishing like the old Hawaiians, a bus load of Japanese tourist were taking pics of us. lol

31. I weighed over 400 pounds in 1999. I now weigh considerably less.

32. In Vienna, I asked a man at the tiny hotel I was trying to get a room at "Pardon Moisseur, ou est le consierge?" (He was a frenchman, don't ask how I know).

He replied, in english, "Are you Italian?"

He would rough up any guys that picked on me in a fun-loving way. So anytime I got snowballs thrown at me or whatever, I would call for my bodyguard and he would pay them back DOUBLE. :)

This was shortly after his death.
They were nice, but very quiet and private people.
My dad and Jimi's dad went fishing together every summer.

I once spent a Thanksgiving on a dairy farm in Wisconsin when I couldn't get home. I got thrown from a truck in the middle of a cornfield where we were baling corn fodder, and the truck barely missed me....I felt hands push me and the next thing I know, I was on the other side of the field. (I have a ton of guardian angels) :) I also got dragged by a trailer for a few feet, But all-in-all it was a fun time!!! :)

I have a dream job. Even though I work in a factory and was on the "line" for many years, now my job is quality control in that snack food company, which means I get to sample(chow down) potato chips, twistees, cheese puffs, white cheddar popcorn, cheese corn - all hot off the belt, all night long!
It's a tough job, but...you know the rest!

73) I also have 2 tattoo's ................. A female wolf (Shewolf)howling to the moon on my left shoulder and a Black Panther clawing its way outta my back :D

76. To the surprise of many (since I come across as relatively conservative) I have a tattoo on my ankle of a Celtic cross...that I got when I was 31. The symbol stands for several things, but mainly was used to stand for the cycle of life...life, death & rebirth...thus changes and growth...sorta like what I do and my own life.

77. I lived in Texas for 19 years, Iowa for 3 and Washington state for 16, then back Texas for the past 10.

Today at the post office a lady got angry at the postal service clerck and started shouting. I began to have nausea and had to sit down for some seconds (then I sent my gift to Savannah! Savannah, I didn't throw up, don't worry :eek: ).

82. I play the piano, although rarely now. I used my piano as a method of escaping the mental torture my stepmother inflicted upon me in my teenage years. So, now, when I play, I am reminded of those awful times, so therefore, I play less often.

85. I used to live in the corner where an old Hollywood veteran actor, Victor Mature, used to play as a child.

86) I was born in Boulder, CO and my parents lived down the street from the Mork and Mindy house.

87. I am a member of the International Thespian Society.. No, I didn't say Lesbian.. I said Thespian. lol

88. I create and distribute CD's of my own music...interestingly (or not) enough, under the name MightyRed. I play drums, guitars, keyboards, bass, and sing on the CDs. (As an aside...if you are interested in extreme heavy metal, let me know...I'll send you a copy.)

LOL pink, that house is the McAllister house.... 1619 Pine Street.
People used to go to the door, ring the bell, and ask if Mork could come out and play. My sister's ex lived in that house for a while.

95. I was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer back in January. I have been Cancer free now for 9 months.

96. My great grandfather's father was a count in Italy, who had an only child, but out of wedlock, and that was my ancestor. His two sisters were nuns.

About 20 years ago we got a letter through the Italian consulate in our city saying that we had the right to claim a house in Calabria, and that it would go to the church if not claimed, since it had passed 100 years after the death of that count (if I remember well the story).

It was so expensive to hire a lawyer and make all the papers, that we decided the house would have to go! :(

97) I've never broken a bone or had a cavity.

98. I have two bachelor's degrees. One in Communication/Theater, the other in Spanish.

100. Ok, this is the weirdest thing...and I really don't believe in much of this kind of thing...but....my ex and I were, well, something happened to us that was unexplainable. We were 17 and not stoned btw! We were parking out near the canals (I grew up around rice farms) and parked up on the levy. We had been looking at the stars and saw one moving...at first we thought it was an airplane but then it got closer and had lights all around it and it would move like...like checkerboard type movements. Over here...then we would lose it then see it way over to the left. All of a sudden there was a blinding white light..(we thought it was the cops shining one of those police search lights in the window) ..the next thing we knew...we were waking up from some kind of groggy feeling. It was 4 am! The "star/plane/spaceship" watching had been done at about midnight! We have no recollection of anything but the object we saw in the sky and the blinding light. We lost 4 hours! Still not sure what it was..... Ok so I guess my thing I am saying is...I may have had an alien encounter. (I hate telling this ...it sounds so nuts)

My uncle was the Captain of the Love Boat for several years, one of my sisters dated Frank Sanatra Jr. for several years, and I once took a leak with Charlie Daniels, for several minutes..lol

2) I have testified (more than once) as an "expert witness" in criminal court proceedings.

3) My mother, my sister, and I have all broken the same finger on the same hand at different times.

4. When I was first married and the husband had his first church. We were placed in a home built in the 1880's that was highly haunted. After we moved out, the house was torn down and two bodies were found buried in the basement - circa the late 1800's.

Yes, it was really creepy. It was what was known as a "Captain's House". Sort of like a Precivil war duplex New England used to be famous for. The house was split in have with three floors on either side for the families of sea captains. That way they could support each other. The owner lived on one side on the weekends and we lived on the other the rest of the time.

During the week when the owner was gone? You'd hear furniture and stuff breaking next door. The first time it happened I went over there when she arrived and told her I thought someone had broken in. She rushed on in and everything was in perfect order. Very weird. On our side there were two rooms that were never warm. Ever. You could crank the heat up to 90 and still freeze to death. We only used the first floor because the second was too damn creepy. The third floor wasn't finished, we went up there maybe once or twice, it was mostly just storage area. But the last time I was up there, showing it to my cousin, something pushed us down the stairs.

The second floor was the worst part of the house. You always got this feeling that you were being watched. Three out of four bedrooms just gave you the chills. The fireplace in one bedroom seeped this black gunk that we never COULD figure out what it was - it wasn't creosote, we had the chimney guy come in and check it out. whatever it was, in the spring? It smelled just like blood up there. Very icky.

One of the bedrooms also had a mirror embedded in the wall? I only looked in that thing once. Never again. I saw me, but you couldn't help but wonder if what you'd see if you looked in it. The ex saw something else and he'd never say what it was. So did my sister. The bathroom water on the second floor was always being turned on. We' go up there and find it running. We had no idea how it had gotten on.

The front foyer had this gorgeous cherrywood staircase that I refinished. The whole time I was sanding and staining near the second floor landing, I got the eeriest feeling that I was being watched. I got down towards the middle of the steps and I looked up to see this woman at the top of the stairs. It was one of those quick glance things. The second floor DID have a back entrance from the kitchen. So I looked back and there was nobody there. Thinking that it was a church person I went back through the house to make sure they weren't roaming around looking for me. Of course there was nobody there. When I got back to the stairs? The stain can was upside down on the stairs and the brush was all the way at the top standing upright in the middle. It was very scary. I left the house and went and got one of my friends. She saw it too. We decided to go get the ex. When we got back? The can was at the bottom of the stairs and the brush was in it. The mess on the middle steps was gone. We moved out two weeks later.

And those are just some of the highlights. . .never mind the refrigerator opening by itself or the stove turning off and on by itself. That and the toilet fell through the floor the day we moved out but I don't think that was ghost related. Just a really, really, REALLY old floor and an ancient toilet. I was never so glad as to leave that house.

5. I too had a ghostly encounter at the first hospital where I worked in Lexington, Ky. I was the only nurse working one night and heard a man's heavy footsteps walking the halls. Only problem was that it was an all female ob/gyn ward. And, all the entrances to the unit were locked and only the guard could get in with a key. The guard told me he never made rounds that night. And, as I went by the empty nursery to check on my patients at that end of the hall, I heard a woman crying in the nursery. But, the nursery was locked and dark. yikes!!

6. I have sometimes had strange dream/real-life connections or coincidences, where I would dream about something or someone, and something similar would then occur in the waking world.

16. I threw the Sears upholstery cleaner guy out of my house last August after he argued with me over a stain that he created by not cleaning my sofa thoroughly. 19. I once went on a 30-mile bike ride with about 20 people. Myself and one other girl were the only women in the class to finish the ride, the rest were guys. The wind was against us going to our destination, took us almost 1 hour and 1/2 to get there, and no time at all to get back.

23) Speaking of exotic dancing - when I was a senior in high school, my best friend Alex dared me to be a go-go dancer at a bar. He acted like my "manager" I had forgotten about this little trip into the absurd. I kind of liked it - guys at my feet reaching for me! I didn't have a sexy outfit or bikini, so I wore my matching bikini underwear. Go-go dancing. What a trip!

24. Speaking of go-go boots, I used to have a pair of white, patent leather go-go boots with fringe back in 1966. They came up to the upper part of my calves. I thought I was so hot!!

53. I was a major drug head in the 70's. I did everything except shoot up heroin. Although I watched plenty of people do it. We smoked crack (I even knew how to 'cook' the coke to make crack...we did not call it crack back then and I hate to say it but I liked LSD) but I have not touched anything illegal drugs since about 1988. I hung out with some heavy duty drug dealers...like the kind with their own planes who flew to Columbia and carried guns. Then I found religion and went the OPPOSITE direction...now I am in the middle. Nothing illegal but I like my red wine. :D

I have a low tolerance to "normal" drugs as it is - something as simple as Sudafed makes me stoned. I can't imagine WANTING to feel that way.
