Lyrics to the song DRIVE by Incubus
Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I cant help but ask myself how much I’ll let the fear take the wheel and steer
It’s driven me before, it seems to have a vague
Haunting mass appeal
Lately I’m beginning to find that I should be the one behind the wheel
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there, I’ll be there
So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive, oh oh
It’s driven me before, it seems to be the way
That everyone else get around
Lately, I’m beginning to find that when I drive myself, my light is found
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there, I’ll be there
Would you choose water over wine
Hold the wheel and drive
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there, I’ll be there
Who’s Driving ??
I heard this song yesterday and for whatever reason the words rang through differently this time. Let’s say for a moment that your life is a CAR …… it may be small or big, fancy or plain…. But it carries us through this journey called life and it's YOURS!
We are born……the car is shiny, new, not broken in yet. As we mature and become adults, the way our car was broken in and taken care of early on (our childhood experiences) will determine how well it performs throughout the rest of it’s lifespan. If abused early on, it will forever deal with results of that abuse.
Along the way it gets scratched and dented by circumstances and people that hurt us. (Darn grocery carts!) Do we whine and b**** about the scratches and dents, or do we try parking a little further away from the carts and door dingers next time. Do we learn to avoid relationships and situations that bring us pain (more dents and scratches)? or do we continue to put ourselves in situations that will almost definitely ensure another booboo?
As time passes we notice the appearance of our car is becoming dingy (someone forget to wax?) and feel like it’s not as nice as someone else’s car. (stop comparing your car to everyone elses!) Do we sit around and complain about the unkept car, or do we get off our butts and polish it up? Do we sit around eating bons bons complaining of our physical exterior, or do we get up and take a brisk walk?. Do we use cheap gas and fuss cause the engine is knocking, or do we eat healthy and run like a champ?
I think as humans, we sometimes tend to set the “autopilot” and crawl in the back seat. Mind you……this car never stops really –life moves forward anyway. Suddenly you hear a thud and realize you’ve ended up in the ditch!! Oh my!!…. the officer comes up and asks “what happened?” ……Do you look at him and say “ here I was asleep in the back seat and I cannot BELIEVE this car ran in the ditch!! Why does this always happen to me?!” That would be silly wouldn’t it?
But yet so many times we zone out back there (hey autopilot is on!) and suddenly find ourselves in bad situations that further ding up our car. What would happen to our lives if we got back behind the wheel, took responsibility for where it was going and did our best to take care of it ?? What if we had a plan to where we were going? (get a map! set some goals!) Would we find ourselves seeing new and wonderful places, experiencing a more fulfilling trip?
I just felt creative this morning, and have decided that for 2004 – I am turning the autopilot off! I’m getting back behind the wheel, and I am going to drive my car now!
So.................Who is driving *your* car?????
Sometimes I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I cant help but ask myself how much I’ll let the fear take the wheel and steer
It’s driven me before, it seems to have a vague
