My son Lucas, is turning 16 tomorrow
and I am kind of at a loss of what to get him.
When my older children turned 16,
I gave them a piece of jewlery to mark their
16th birthday, a keepsake for them.
With the girls it was easy, I gave them rings
and for my older son, I got him a nice watch.

Lucas has a watch, given to him this Christmas from
my Mother and he doesn't want another one.
He did say he wants his eye-brow pierced.
Uh..NO.
LOL

I am thinking I will give him a $100.00
gift certificate for "Foot Locker"-
but I just feel as though I should get something else.
Something special to mark his 16th.
I'm not throwing him a party or anything.
He wants my Japanese Chicken Wings for dinner
and a Creme' De Menthe pie,
so I am whipping up those for him.
(with the help of my daughter...with this hand,
I need a "helper")

What did you get for your 16th birthday?
And no, he is not getting a car!
He doesn't have his license.

Then on Friday is my daughter's fiance's birthday
and my youngest daughter, Brianna, will be 17 Feb. 6th!
At least they have killer sales this time of year!!
:p

Any ideas are much appreciated!

LOL -- a non-parent is the first respondent to this thread!

I do remember a friend of mine having the same dilemma b/c she also wanted to buy her son something significant for his 16th. She got him a St. Christopher (patron saint of travellers??) pendant and chain -- simple and classic. Their family is Catholic, however, so if a religious medal doesn't appeal to you, what about just a chain?

my 15.5 year old son wanted an initial ring for Christmas which I am now ordering for him (late) For his 16th birthday I am buying my 25 year old daughters car for him, a JUNKER, but I won't have to drive him everywhere and he AIN'T taking my car.

A bunch of the kids at my school do not get cars but what they do get is a special key-ring for that day that they will get to drive (then they get the key to use their parent's car). You can get a bunch of them that have meaning or just one that is amazing looking!

I honestly have no idea what I got for my 16th birthday.
Oh come on! I don't remember what I had for breakfast, and you expect me to think back that far? *LOL*

Regardless...

How about a collage of the cars you would of bought him in another world? *LOL*

You said he didn't want a watch? What about a nice pocketwatch? Something that could have sentimental value down the road. He wouldn't have it on him on a daily basis...but rather, something he could put on a shelf and look at for years down the line?

I'm not sure how much you're wanting to spend, but how about a PDA? It might not be a keepsake item, but then, does he go for keepsakes? A PDA might teach him now how to be organized which would benefit him as he goes into his last years of high school and into college (assuming he's going there).

Thanks you guys!
What super ideas-
I love the key chain idea OneTiger,
I have never heard of that.
I think I'll give him that when he passes
his first driving test as a keepsake of that!

They are all wonderful gift suggestions!

I picked up the gift certificate-
but just got one for the whole mall.
That way he can decide what he wants
and where to get it.
I know he wants some shoes and if he doesn't
spend like a mad-man on them,
he might have some money left over for
something else, (hopefully).
It never ceases to amaze me what teens will
pay for a pair of tennis shoes-
$80.00!!!
I could never....

I then got him a nice sterling silver chain-
he likes silver better than gold.
(Thanks for the suggestion Savannah!)
It's 26 inch- he likes them on the long side.

He also likes to do a lot of drawing
and I got him some art supplies and a lamp
for his desk.
That's the only thing he told me really wanted-
a lamp!

I appreciate the help you all.
Thank You!
:p

Charms bracelets are back, and are a keepsake, I bet if you got her one the first charm you could get her would be a "16" than on holidays or gift giving occasions like valentines day get her a heart etc.....
Just an idea.

Another suggestion for your daughter would be a locket. My mother gave me one when I graduated from high school and it has remained special to me all my life. Now it contains the pictures of my children. And, it is something I can pass down to my children. They both have fond memories of sitting on mommy's lap opening the heart to see their pictures in side. :)
