My friend in Boston convinced me to go to a kickoff party for the Boston Avon Foundation Walk for Breast Cancer. I am so happy I went. It was a moving event & I'm now signed up to walk. I'm going to walk in memory of my advisee's mom who just died three weeks ago from a fight against breast cancer. I feel that it's the best thing I can do and that I will support so many women who have fought, won or lost, against this horrid disease. I'm nervous about raising $1800.00, but if I have to get over my nervousness of talking to strangers & businesses in order to do it, I will! I plan on making a donation website within the next week or so on the Avon site, sending out lots of emails, and mailing stuff to people who I know but don't have an email for. I'll also talk to my advisee about this and see if she wants me to go public with this at the school and with the parents who knew her mom. I hope she's okay with that. I'd really like to see the 10th grade parents rally around this cause and support me in this walk. The first day is a marathon, and then the next day a 1/2 marathon...it's basically taking the 3 day walk and putting it into 2 days. As a counselor who has had to support several girls and boys whose mom's are in the fight, I think it will be great for me to do this.
