Maria 02-24-2004, 09:02 PM Do you have any?
I am not superstitious, but I never close the door myself when leaving a friend's home (they have to do it or I will never come back again!) and I never put my handbag on the floor, my finances might be ruined!
And never, ever, sleep with my wardrobe door open, the ghosts inside would escape and pull my feet.
Other than that, I am a perfectly rational woman! :D
Dan_Shues 02-24-2004, 09:13 PM That isn't a ghost...
That's...ME! Hehehehehe!!

Hohohoho!!

PerthGuy 02-25-2004, 12:16 AM One if finance....very much like Maria's...only about Knowledge...I don't leave a book or good magazine drop onto the floor or somewhere dirty...lol...maybe it's just me keeping it clean and respecting it. Sometimes also if I can when buying a book or any article for that matter...identical matter that has been touched by many people I try and grab the last one...the 'virgin' one that hasn't been touched...lol.
And with finance one....it's really just common sense and a common and basic adundance principle...inserting my dollar bills (gosh I'm sounding like a Yank...it'll be a few more months before I revert back to Australian English...then again I'll have an American or be there in a few months!) the right way up...which ever way...just make it the same way and in denominational order. Largest at back 50's and 100's. Also....well with the right way up I put the hologram to the right side...the going forward side.
In the US I learnt many things with finance...in that consumers just literally chuck their money to the saleperson. As if they have sooo much money that they can just 'throw it away' or that they think exchanging currency in a trade is a negative or bad thing and can't stand to part with money...so they throw it at the counter.
Another thing I do is make sure I hand to notes and coins to the person supposed to receive them. It's also good security...if you're in a line and you put the money on the counter whilst the cashier or salesperson is busy the person behind you could take the money as you look away. I'm sure it's happened before with criminal gangs/groups in scams ...like ditracting you as you make the sale and the assistant takes the money and hides it and or moves away.

RobsGirl 02-25-2004, 10:44 AM My father is a great jokster and when I was pregnant with my first child he joked around a lot with that line from "Gone With The Wind" about putting scissors under the bed to "cut the pain". After delivery, he sent me flowers with a pair of scissors in the bouquet.
I know it's totally stupid but those scissors sort of became the pregnancy good luck charm. They weren't under the bed but I took them to the hospital with each following delivery and my niece took them last year when she had her first. She's pregnant again and is going to make sure they go along. Without even realizing it my father started something.
I also unplug everything during thunderstorms. I have no idea why, I just do.
Bella 02-25-2004, 11:09 AM I can't sleep with a body part dangling over the side of the bed.
I can almost feel them being nibbled at. *shiver*
I also rather firmly believe in Karma, what you do, will come back to you, so you better be nice.
Keris 02-25-2004, 12:11 PM I'm with you on those open wardrobe doors Maria - I mean, who knows what's lurking in there in the dark!
Also I'm a bit funny about Magpies, if I see one I just have to kiss the back of my hand , to kiss away the bad luck as they say. Iknow in my heart of hearts that despite the rhyme - One for sorrow, Two for joy etc - they aren't really unlucky but I've been doing it for so long now that I'm afraid to stop...just in case!:o
Polly 02-25-2004, 02:59 PM Well the purse on the floor thing making your finances go bad? NOW I know why I'm in debt! :D
Savannah 02-25-2004, 04:21 PM From my mother: an arrangement of red and white flowers means death. So, not a combination I would ever give to anyone.
When I did my undergrad, I had a "lucky pen" with which I always wrote my exams. It was just an ordinary refillable (good thing!) Papermate. I still have it. Hmmm..... maybe I should pull it out and put it to use again -- see if that luck transfers to other things!
Gillian 02-25-2004, 05:48 PM A couple my Mother used to hold near and dear.
"Stir with a knife, stir up strife."
And something about never putting shoes on a table - supposed to be bring bad luck.
Whenever possible I stir with a knife, and put shoes on the table just to prove that I'm not superstitous.
I also open umbrellas inside the house, walk under ladders whenever the opportunity arises, and tread on all the cracks in the sidewalk.
Gillian
Polly 02-25-2004, 09:52 PM No WONDER my house is under so much stress! I put my shoes on the table every morning when I'm getting ready for work. I stir with a knife all the time. Add to that the purse on the floor, and I'm toast!

Dan, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that Doink the Clown from WWF/WWE?
I never burn red candles-
not even at Christmas.
They bring about "negative spirits"
I "knock on wood" often,....
and believe that "money is coming" if
the palm of my hand itches.
I can just never remember which
hand it is that is supposed to bring the money-
right or left?

Sage the right palm itching is supposed to mean money coming in :) an the left palm signifies money being paid out :(
Maria 02-26-2004, 08:07 PM We have the same about itchy palms and Babes, in New Year's Eve, you have to recreate everything you wish for you during the year. So, like you, we want to have food in the house, nice clothes on, some money, etc. I always clean the house and iron all my laundry, have no dirty dishes, so that during the year the house remains like that! ;)
Another superstition very common in Brazil, if you want someone to leave your house, you put the broom behind a door!
John-311 02-28-2004, 10:03 AM I have a few pairs of lucky boxer shorts that I only wear on special occasions and I give them full credit for any good fortune - and I blame any bad luck on me wearing the wrong undershorts.
Genevieve 02-29-2004, 09:03 PM We used to do the cigarette thing too. That was our wish cigarette. Turn it upside down, make a wish, and it was the last one you smoked. I had heard that an itchy nose meant you were going to kiss a fool. How funny all of these sound! :)
The only connection I can make to the cigarette thing, is that in Native American culture, tobacco is used in ceremony, for blessings, and during prayer. Explained simply, prayer pipes can be used and your words/wishes/intentions, carried by the smoke to the spirit world.
singalou 02-29-2004, 09:55 PM hmmmm I put my purse on the floor too...bah! have to quit THAT...the one i hate is that one.... "dont step on the cracks (in the sidewalk) or you'll break your mother's back"....i still dont like to step on 'em....hate that...always looking DOWN thing, LOL...no umbrellas open in the house either....I do have a lucky HAT tho=)
Our New Years Day superstitions are A) you have to have your Christmas tree down by the end of New Years Day or you will be unorganized and behind all year B) we have to eat cabbage to bring money and blackeyed peas for good luck. I force my kids to eat a bite of the cabbage but we love the blackeyed peas!!
And of course spilling salt I always throw a pinch over my left shoulder.

Too late now...just know that is the reason for all your unorganization and falling behind in tasks. :D
Leave it up till next year and try again!
