onetiger 03-05-2004, 04:05 PM One of the schools who seems interested is in Minneapolis...I know nothing about it!
Also - the American School in London is VERY interested...how funny if I was in London & could meet those of you in Europe in the near future!
RobsGirl 03-05-2004, 04:07 PM I lived there for six years. I'm there four or five times a month. What would you like to know?
It has one of the worst highway systems I've ever driven on, but the burbs are set up very nicely and you're only minutes from Wisconsin should you ever desire to escape!
Maria 03-05-2004, 04:23 PM Liane, there's no doubt in my heart that everyone should live abroad when they are offered the possibility. If not for the career, go just to find out lots of stuff about yourself and about the world out there.
The experience is completely different from a trip. Living abroad is meeting different cultures, because one thing you'll learn is that foreigners tend to gather together. My friends here are from all over the world, although I also have some Luxembourgish friends.
I would certainly go to London if I were you, but then you have to negotiate lodging, since rent may eat all your salary! It's very expensive to live in London itself.
RobsGirl 03-05-2004, 04:34 PM Yes, if I had a choice between Minnesota and London? London, hands down.
Sweety,
I heard that Minneapolis has the largest mall in the US. Mall of America I think... ;) If you go to London, that would be so cool because your dream of going to France is not that far away :). That is so cool you are getting job offers that is really hard to pass up :).
RobsGirl 03-05-2004, 06:56 PM That's true Tyg - the mall is there, it has literally hundreds of stores and an amusement park. There's also Valley Fair and the Renassiance Festival a little farther south. The Mississippi and St. Croix collide there and the Vikings take over ever autumn, if one likes football. (BIG Packers/Vikings rivalry there, Tyg, you'd probably love it. lol)
I fully admit that I did not walk away from my Minnesota experience with a good opinion of the state, just the opposite actually. I found it barren when it came to the arts and education. The most exiciting thing that happened when it came to theatre there was when one of the local actresses turned out to be a former member of the SLA (the group that kidnapped Patty Hearst) who'd been hiding in plain site for twenty odd years.
LADave 03-05-2004, 08:42 PM Like Molly, I've spent a lot of time in Minneapolis. I used to have grandparents there whom I visited at least once a year. I went to college at Carleton College which is in Northfield, about 40 miles south of the Cities. And I lived in Minneapolis for 2 years while going to the University of Minnesota Law School. I could answer any number of questions.
I must take issue with Molly's statement that Minneapolis is barren when it comes to the arts. I found it to be quite the opposite. For instance, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts holds the finest collection of Chinese art in the United States.
It's a great city, I think. I would still be living there had not homesickness set in and brought me back to LA.
Dave:)
RobsGirl 03-05-2004, 08:50 PM :D Give me LA any day Dave!!!
Savannah 03-05-2004, 09:34 PM It's the closest major US city to me...... which means the weather is very similar to mine...... long and frigid winters!
If you are into outdoor activities (camping, hiking) you'd probably find lots to enjoy. They also have a very popular Blues Festival in the summer.
SnowPrincess could tell you more.
Molly,
When I go there I would love to stay on the Packers side hee hee hee!
Softiee19 03-09-2004, 04:15 AM I have grown up in the cittes all my life.. (MN)
And acutally the school systems are pretty good. Yes there the budget cuts, and referedims and so forth, but its like ANY state.
I attend Hamline University- a wonderful private college with excellent raitings... When I was In regular school (pre-college) I attended a HS that had the IB program... And this program bumped me ahead a year in college. SO Yes I believe our school systems are pretty decent..
When it comes to our roads/traffic it CANNOT be any worse then LA or New York or IL. I actually think Minnesota drivers have some type of manners when it comes to driving.
As to art, we have the wonderful Minnesota Art institue. For entertainment we have The mall of america, theme parks, theatres, LOTS of lakes, and so forth.
Our weather- Well our winters are snowy and cold, are summers are hot and humid at times, or mild.
I think Minnesota's a great place to live :} This is just my 2 cents :}
SnowPrincess 03-09-2004, 11:40 PM I live 30 miles North of Minneapolis, William drives there to work each day, no problems. His says the drive to and from work is a breeze during rush hour compared to Chicago.
Our sales tax is 6.5%
Our gas price right now(as I saw tonight is $1.69)
Our public school system is wonderful, and always being improved.
I wouldn't live in any other state other than Minnesota :)
Its fun, its cultured, we have so much to do during all seasons.
Were the jobs offered public shools? If so here are a few links:

Photo tour of Mpls. schools (http://www.phototour.minneapolis.mn.us/public_schools.html)
There is so much good in Minnesota, there are alot of down to earth people.
If there is any specific information you'd like me to dig out just ask, I would be happy to help you.
