Surgery

I have to have surgery on my neck. There're going in from the front, and scraping off some spurs, then fusing 2 discs. The doc told me that I'll be in the hospital over night and out of work for 2 weeks, then wear a brace for 4 weeks.

I'm scared out of my mind. Not of the surgery itself, but of the possible risks.

Has anyone had this type of surgery or known anyone who has? I could use some success stories.

The surgeon I have is one of the best in the areas and he said he's never had anyone have problems from the surgery, but I'm a wreck thinking about it. I'm having it done on the 24th.

Thanks,
K

Thank you for your prayers and well wishes everyone.

Mrs. Hedgehog 7 surgeries? The poor man!!! This thing with me started with a car accident several years. The driver hit a pole and the car tipped on it's hood, my head smashed the front windsheild. The impact caused 1 disk to move slightly behind the other. And the bone growth, well I'm not sure what that's all about.

Everyone tells me I'll do fine. Now I just have to believe them.

Kalri, this kind of surgery is scary for you because it envolves the column, but it seems like they are just correcting the problem caused by that accident, possibly the disks are not aligned or some extra growth is limiting your movements or causing you impairement. That's when the neurosurgeon or the orthopedic surgeon decides to operate.

I am sure you'll be okay, just be sure to follow his orientation.

I had a lady in a class I led a couple of years ago who had to have a surgery almost like this. I am not sure if hers involved the spurs etc but she had to be cut the same way. She was fine and all came out well. I know it must be very scary but as long as you trust your Dr I would rest easy. I know I will be sure to remember you in my prayers.

Kalri, btw....I just noticed ...(I am sorry, this is a serious topic but now I am giggling)you might want to edit your post!!!!! Or Maria if you are here maybe you can do it!! I will edit mine too when you do!!!

Nessa, how long did he have to wear a neck brace? I have this phobia about anything around my neck. I can't even wear turtlenecks!

Thanks again everyone.

Where it says disk well...you had a typo in the word disk...made a reference to a male body part! :D LOL!!!

Stay strong Kalri, I'll be praying for you!!

My Doc. reckons I've got a tumour on my spinal cord, but I know the surgery techniques are so advanced these days, they should be able to sort it out ok.

UK, I'll be praying for you too. You have a very good attitude, and I hear that helps a lot. That's something I'm working on.

Kalri, My brother (31) just had this surgery Friday. Part of his shoulder bone was rubbing on his spinal column. They went in through his neck and cut the bone away. He was in surgery for 3.5 hours. When he woke up he said he felt great. He had been in pain for years and asked the Dr.s to do an MRI, they felt it wasn't necessary, than his hands and arms started tingling, and Thursday he was playing basketball with his buddies and got hit in the back. He was in termendous pain so he went to the ER and those Dr's did an MRI and found the problem.
Good luck on your surgery.

A friend at work had this done about a year ago. He said he felt like coming back to work the next day. He never had any problems with it. He was off a couple of weeks (doctors orders).
