Many people don't know that Windows XP, 2000, and NT come with some built-in tools for monitoring your machine's activity and performance.
No additional downloads are necessary to monitor your system's activity and alert you when certain things are happening. These built-in tools started with Windows NT, and they've been carried over into Windows 2000 and XP.
How to monitor your XP machine
To access your system-performance and log monitors, click your Start menu.
Select Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Performance.
This launches the Windows System Monitor. It's a real-time view of activities being monitored on your system.
You can modify the Windows System Monitor to track as little or as much information as you want. You have close to 100 trackable system activities to choose from.
To add a tracking counter, right-click the graph and choose "Add counter." To remove a counter, simply highlight the counter and press the delete key.
Adding logs and alerts
To add logs and alerts, click the [+] icon to expand the Performance Logs and Alerts section. From here, you can add alerts to notify you of numerous system events.
