RobsGirl 04-07-2004, 07:10 PM Dan, is it safe to upload saved discs from a crashed virused computer onto a new computer?
The discs were saved during the time the computer was slowly being taken over by a home made virus from a crazy person. <G>
Thank you in advance, dear!!!!!
Molly
Dan_Shues 04-07-2004, 07:30 PM Molly,
I would be VERY wary of doing that...
What you could do...is put the disk into your computer....you'll be safe doing that because it doesn't autoplay floppies...
Then, go to "My Computer" and try right clicking on that drive....search the resulting menu and see if there is an option to scan that drive for viruses.
If that doesn't work...
Go into your anti virus program...search around see if there's an option to where you can do a virus scan of the floppy drive (thus scanning that disk)
If THAT doesn't work...
Double click on your floppy drive...
Then, highlight all of those files...right click on one of them and once again, see if there's an option to scan the files for viruses...
Let me know if any of those work or don't work, Molly...
If they don't, I'll give ya some more instructions...

RobsGirl 04-07-2004, 07:41 PM Thanks Dan, you're a life saver. I'm asking for Cade. He's helping his brother set up his new system tonight and they'd saved all these files from the other computer. There are files on there that they absolutely need for his brother's business. So they're trying to figure out what to do to get them. I'll relay the message and let you know if any of this doesn't work. :)

RobsGirl 04-07-2004, 08:39 PM Oh, Dan, btw, Cade would like to know what you think of the Norton Firewall. Is it anygood in your opinion? (Congrats, Cade's looking for a new computer god and you might be it. <G>)
Dan_Shues 04-07-2004, 08:44 PM *LOL* Thanks for compliments, Molly...*smiles*
Tell Cade, I feel honored! *grins*
Sorry it's taken me a bit to reply...I'm currently building a system for a friend...
As for Norton? I think it's very good. I've used Symantec (Norton) products since around 2000...and the firewall since around 2001. I have never been hacked or cracked...never had any problems with it what so ever....
And it is easy to install and easy to use...
Definetly a keeper for myself....
RobsGirl 04-07-2004, 09:45 PM Okay, um, maybe you can enlighten us a little - Caden downloaded the Norton firewall and then it wouldn't let him go online. lol He has AOL and for some reason, the Norton FW wouldn't let the AOL through even after he'd authorized it. He's ended up going with something else but I'm just curious to see why it would do that.
(Someday I just might let Cade in over here, until then, he's going to have to worship you from afar. . .<G>)
Dan_Shues 04-07-2004, 09:59 PM Molly...
Did he download theh firewall or did he install the firewall? I'm just curious, because I didn't think you could download the firewall...I thought it had to be purchased. (unless it's just the trial) Might just be a mixup in terminology...
As to why it's not letting him through...
I'm not quite sure why it wouldn't let him through. The only thing you might want to try, is seeing if in the Firewall Software itself, AOL is "allowed"....
What version does he have? Of Norton Firewall and of AOL? I'll do some looking online tonight and tomorrow and see if I can find any potential conflicts it might have...I don't think there are any...
About the only thing he might do, is try resetting the rule for AOL (to automatic)...and then open up AOL again and then "allow" it at all times, again...
See if there was perhaps a glitch in the choosing, you know?
Sorry I can't give you anything concrete yet, Molly. Let me see what I can come up with...
*LOL*
Worship me from afar? That's a new one! Hehehe...
*smiles and hugs*

RobsGirl 04-07-2004, 11:54 PM Cade thanks you very much, Dan!!! He already took the Norton off but he thanks you for offering to check it out.
He chose Sygate and it seems to be working well, is that any good? (I use Outpost, I wouldn't know. lol)
Dan_Shues 04-08-2004, 12:02 AM No problem, Molly. Take Cade that he's quite welcome! *smiles*
I've actually never used Sygate personally. However, I've known a few people who have and I've read reviews on it, and there doesn' t seem to be any glaring problems or flaws with Sygate. If there was, of course, you would hear about it...
I assume he's using the free version?
One other one he may want to look into, would be Zone Alarm, which there is also a free version of that as well. Most of the time, Norton and Zone Alarm are the two firewalls most popular with alot of people...followed by BlackIce Defender and Sygate and such...
So, I'd say he's probably pretty well protected...
I don't know what Operating System he's using, but if he's worried about getting hacked, if he is running Windows XP if he doesn't know already, there is a built in firewall that can be turned on (it's turned off by default)...it doesn't protect fully, but, it's a good "second line of defense."
*smiles*

RobsGirl 04-08-2004, 12:17 AM Thank you Danno!!!!
Yes, he's using XP. You've been a great help, bud!!!
Dan_Shues 04-08-2004, 01:28 AM No problem, Molly...
Always glad to help you, pard'ner...
*Tips his head*
Now put them wagons....in a circle and get them puppies rollin...
