Worms

Danno, my boy, I'm becoming your technotard nightmare. . .:D

Do standard virus protection programs take care of worms as well as viruses? I opened up an email in my yahoo box this afternoon and it was embedded in the email - I didn't open any attachment. The virus box popped up but it wouldn't let me send it to the virus vault, delete it or immunize it. So, I'm now running virus scan to see if I can extract it that way. Would you happen to have any suggestions???

Molly...

Are your virus definitions up to date? And yes, they pretty much do work the same as a normal virus. A good anti virus program should pick that thing up (like yours did) and catch it...

Do you know which worm it is?

Depending upon which worm it was, there are some removal tools specifically for some worms.

Make sure your anti-virus is up to date and do what you're doing...do a full system scan. If nothing comes up, you might be safe. (Unless you notice your computer starts to act funny in the future...or if others are getting emails from you that they shouldn't.)

Thanks Dan! You're da man!!!

My AVG definitions are up to date, but it still didn't pick up the worm. I'm running Trend Micro right now and if it doesn't work, I'll have to go reopen the stupid email and get the name of the worm. Stoopid me, I didn't write it down. . .

Molly...

If you want another opinion...you can run your computer through this...

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&close_parent=true&plfid=23&pkj=TXPOESLHFEPGEVVSDUX

It's Norton's online virus check. It won't fix the problem, but it will let you know. Just choose Virus Detection and let it run. It's web based...

If that link doesn't get you to it...just go here: http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym

And click "Go"
