Classic Rock - Share Your Favorite Songs With Us

Another member, in a classic rock mood, suggested we start a classic rock thread for everyone to share their favorite songs.

So lets define Classic Rock. Its very hard to do. Classic Rock at one time referred to the hits from the 1970's, but has grown now to include hits from the late '50s, the '60s and even the '80s. Classic Rock does not include the pure rock'n'roll hits you would hear on an oldies station, like early Elvis, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holley, Bill Haley, etc. The songs should be at least 20 years old (pre - 1988), and should be hits that have stood the test of time. If you listen to Classic Rock radio you probably have an idea what Classic Rock has morphed into these days.

Hopefully you'll be able to provide a link to an audio or video file so we can all listen to & enjoy the song. Lyrics are cool if you can copy & paste them into your reply. Supplying a picture of the performers would be going all out.

If you're like me, its impossible to nail down just one song as your fave, I plan to post several, but not all at once.

    Have fun ...

    OK I'll go first

    Darling Be Home Soon <---click

by John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful
as he performed it at Woodstock

    Come and talk of all
    The things we did today
    Hear and laugh about
    Our funny little ways

    While we have a
    Few minutes to breathe
    Then I know that it`s
    Time you must leave

    But, darling, be home soon
I couldnt bear to wait an
    Extra minute if you dawdled

    My darling, be home soon
It`s not just these few hours
    But I've been waiting
    Since I toddled for
    The great relief of
    Having you to talk to

    And now a quarter of
    My life is almost past
    I think I`ve come to
    See myself at last

    And I see that the
    Time spent confused
    Was the time that
    I spent without you
And I feel myself in bloom

    So, darling, be home soon
I couldnt bear to wait an
    Extra minute if you dawdled

    My darling, be home soon
It`s not just these few hours
    But I've been waiting
    Since I toddled for
    The great relief of
    Having you to talk to

    So, darling
    My darling, be home soon
I couldnt bear to wait an
    Extra minute if you dawdled

    My darling, be home soon
It`s not just these few hours
    But I've been waiting
    Since I toddled for
    The great relief of
    Having you to talk to

    Go and beat your crazy
    Head against the sky
    Try and see beyond
    The houses and your eyes
It`s okay to shoot the moon

    Darling, come home soon
I couldnt bear to wait an
    Extra minute if you dawdled

    My darling, be home soon
It`s not just these few hours
    But I've been waiting
    Since I toddled for
    The great relief of
    Having you to talk to

I've mostly listened to classic rock stations since I was 12 or so, but it's hard to name favorite songs, really. So I'll just list a few good ones that come to mind at the moment.

One of the stations out here plays Superstition by Stevie Wonder pretty often, and I really like that. Here's a video of him playing it with Stevie Ray Vaughan at his studio that I came across awhile back (the video's not great but the sound is good): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lO8zQN5LHY

And here's something else I've been listening to a lot lately, Under Pressure by Queen (and David Bowie of course, but this is just Queen): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-xVb1qsPCw

And to continue a theme, here's some Watching the Wheels by John Lennon, with home video action!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY_xY_Q-kQE

I never knew what that referred to either, but it appears that it may be a drug reference. That would make sense.

Led Zeppelin / Stairway To Heaven

There are other songs by them that I like more, but this is the ultimate classic in my mind. I can admit to being obsessed with this band in 1975.

    "Stairway To Heaven"

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying the stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying the stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
    Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
    And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying the stairway to heaven.

    Bonnie Tyler

    Its A Heartache

    Bonnie Tyler's It's a Heartache

Its a heartache, nothing but a heartache
Hits you when its too late, hits you when youre down
Its a fools game, nothing but a fools game
Standing in the cold rain, feeling like a clown

Its a heartache, nothing but a heartache
Love him till your arms break, then hell let you down
It aint right with love to share
When you find he doesnt care for you
It aint wise to need someone as much as I depended on you

Oh, its heartache, nothing but a heartache

The Moody Blues~Nights In White Satin

    Nights in white satin,
    Never reaching the end,
    Letters Ive written,
    Never meaning to send.

    Beauty Id always missed
    With these eyes before,
    Just what the truth is
    I cant say anymore.

    cause I love you,
    Yes, I love you,
    Oh, how, I love you.

    Gazing at people,
    Some hand in hand,
    Just what Im going thru
    They can understand.

    Some try to tell me
    Thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end,

    And I love you,
    Yes, I love you,
    Oh, how, I love you.
    Oh, how, I love you.

    Nights in white satin,
    Never reaching the end,
    Letters Ive written,

    "Alone Again, naturally"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_P-v1BVQn8

I thought this artist was a female this whole time until I pulled up this vid.

In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
    And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
    She's stood him up"
    No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
    Alone again, naturally

    To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to well wouldn’t do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
    Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
    Cut me into little pieces
    Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
    Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

    Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years
    And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
    And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
    Despite encouragement from me
    No words were ever spoken
    And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
    Alone again, naturally
    Alone again, naturally

Here's one from me- gotta run-- be back later for more...
    jackson Browne-- the pretender
I'm gonna rent myself a house
in the shade of a freeway
I'm gonna pack my lunch in the morning
and go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down.
    And when the morning light
    comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
    Amen
    Say it again
    Amen
I wanna know what became of the things
we waited for love to bring
were they only the fitful dreams
    of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by
    They say in the end
it's the wink of an eye
    And when the morning light
    comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
    Amen
Caught between the longing for love
and the struggle for the legal tender
    Where the sirens sing
    and the churchbells ring
and the junkman pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
fast asleep at the traffic light
    and the children solemnly wait
    for the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening
    strolls the pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
    begin and end there.
    Oh the laughter
Oh, the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing but to choose off and fight
    They'll tear at the world
    with all their might
while the ships there in their dreams
    sail out of sight
m gonna find myself a girl
who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
    in each other
    s paint-by-number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
and we'll make love 'til our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
ll get up and do it again
    Do it again
I'm gonna be a happy idiot
and struggle for the legal tender
    Where the ads take aim
    and lay their claim
to the heart and soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie (?)
in those things that money can buy
Oh, true love could've been a contender
    Are you there?
Say a prayer for the pretender
Who started out so young and strong
    Only to surrender.
Say a prayer for the pretender
Are you there for the pretender?
Say a prayer for the pretender
Oh, Are you there for the pretender?
Are you there for the pretender
