What do you remember?
I know we've done this before, but I couldn't find the old thread. So, I thought I'd start a new one. It's always fun to talk about things we remember from our youth. So, I'll begin....
I remember when gas was 35 cents a gallon and we thought that was expensive! I remember sitting in long lines at the gas pumps during the energy crisis of the early '70's. I remember when girls were not allowed to wear pants to our school. It was 1971 before we were allowed to wear pants. ![]() I remember when sodas all came in bottles. At least they did where I live. I remember when bread cost 19 cents a loaf. I remember pet rocks. I remember when most of the movies I saw were shown at the drive-in theatre. Imagine a carload full of 5 kids at a drive-in! I remember helping my aunt wash her clothes in a wringer washer. I was so afraid I'd get a finger caught in it! I remember paper dolls. Oh, sure they are still around, but bet no one really plays with them like we did when I was a little girl. Who's next? |

the milk man!!! i remember the milk man!
![]() and you had to shake the bottle before you took off the cardboard cover on the bottle! and you'd leave him a note if you needed any butter or eggs that week.. cause he delivered to your door! penny candies! soda jerks in the drug stores! no seat belts in cars, heck katrina, i remember when gas was in the teens per gallon. what a few years can do! ![]() and lets see... oh! maybe this will be contraversial...pledge of allegiance AND prayer in school, every morning! and it wasn't an issue if the religion was different, we learned from differences. somehow i think this just may go off intended topic ![]() have fun! |

I remember all those things, Chris! With the exception of gas being in the teens.
I remember my mom putting the milk bottle out on the porch for the milk man. And I spent many a lazy Saturday afternoon at the drugstore counter sipping a chocolate coke while flipping through the comicbooks (without buying them ).Ok, here are some more from me.... I remember pull tabs on beer cans. I remember milk only coming in bottles or paper cartons. I remember alot of live tv shows when I was a child. I remember transistor radios. We thought they were so cool. ![]() I remember 45 records. I remember watching Bonanza with my family every week without fail. I remember frozen tv dinners in the metal trays. I remember when the Christmas lights on our tree were those big huge ones, and not the little mini lights we have today. |

As a little girl, I remember the Watergate trials being on televsion every single day on every single channel, and not really realizing how important it was...and being really angry that I couldn't watch my shows.
We also watched Captain Kangaroo every day before school, and Mr. Rogers in the afternoons. Some of these I said in the old thread which is gone now...but... I remember getting our first microwave...It was so huge my Dad had to wrap in a bed sheet instead of wrapping paper to surprise my mom for Christmas. Then he was convinced we would get radiation from the microwave, and we had to stand across the kitchen we heated anything up. I remember having a huge console black and white television with no remote. My father also thought we would get radiation from the TV, and we were not allowed to sit too close for fear of damaging our eyes. lol I remember getting our first video game (far before the playstation), and it was TV tennis. Did anyone else have that? You just hit ball back and forth with your little paddles? And on one setting you got like four paddles, and suddenly it was TV hockey! Woo hoo! lol I remember my teenage neighbor girl teaching me to roller skate, blow bubbles and how to yo-yo, but we also had those...clackers? Or clacker balls? My parents hated those. I was never very coordinated, and I can't even count how many time I was going full speed with those things and smacked myself in the head or the face. Or paddle balls? I used that to torture my brother on a continuous basis.... Did anyone have a hula hoop? I never could hula hoop, and still can't. Im hula-hoop challenged. *frown* I had a 3-speed bicycle which I thought was the living end....Does everyone remember their first bicycle?

My first bicycle looked alot like this one only mine was blue. I remember that it really wasn't just my bike. I had to share it with my 4 brothers. And, it was a male version bicycle. I had alot of wrecks on that bike.
![]() I remember that we had a tv alot like this one. It was black and white, of course. We didn't even own a color tv set until about 1972.

And, of course, who could ever forget the formica kitchen tables and vinyl chairs?
Jody, I remember those stupid Watergate hearings, too. We were all mad, too, that it was taking up our tv time.

I remember what I believe was the first reality tv show. The year was 1971. It was called "An American Family". Our family was hooked on it.
Here's a link to their official website if anyone is interested in reading more about them. http://www.thelouds.com/ |

I remember learning to ride my first bike, which I got for Christmas when I was 4. It didn't have training wheels, and my father must have run 10 miles along side me that day. I remember climbing to the top of the tallest tree around without even considering the possibility that I might fall, and wondering why my mother was so frightened.
I remember Hot Wheels die-cast cars, the original "Batman" series, and neighborhood baseball games in the back yard. I remember being made to eat brussel sprouts. I remember my family inviting a less-fortunate family home after church for Sunday dinner, and being surprised that their children had never eaten whipped cream or chocolate syrup. I remember sleeping on my grandparent's livingroom floor along with eleven cousins on SEVERAL Chrismas Eves...and how we would all end up giggling until our parents threatened to pack up and take us home if we didn't quieten down and go to sleep. I remember the how that "first kiss" felt (my world couldn't possibly get any better), and how I felt when my first dog died (my world couldn't possibly get any worse).

I remember Crazy Daisies (had them all over the walls of my bedroom). And I remember crocheted beanies and crushed velvet clothing when they were popular the first time.
I remember fishnet stockings and garter belts before pantyhose became popular. And I remember go-go boots. I remember when the micro-mini was popular. We wore our skirts so shirt we could not dare sit down! I remember wearing our hair long and parted in the middle. Seems like all the girls did. I remember collecting troll dolls and rat finks. |
