Valentin'sDay is becoming a new novelty date in Holland since 1995!
Before that data nobody knew it!
But merchandisers saw money in it,, and borrowed this idea from the USA.
Also a welcome income for them between Chrismas and Easter!
Today many shops are red and pink.. and full with hearts of all kind.
And restaurants do big business!
It's ofcourse for new anonymous lovers very appealing!
...and for me very very new!

My question is; Do couples in long term relationships celebrate that day too,, and every year?

Yesterday my ym told me that he come and take me for a surprise date monday, in his best suit!..:) Love it!!

Yes, long term couples often celebrate as well! It really depends on the couple. I know couples that refuse to celebrate most money making holidays and I know couples that spend hundreds or more dollars every Valentine's Day.

My husband & I do spend a little money on each other, but the amount is usually very small ($ 20.00 or so). We don't want to feel pressured to outdo each other every year, so instead we look for little creative gifts. This year I bought him fake mustaches that clip onto pop bottles and I'll present it during a nice dinner along with some bottled drinks so we can use them and laugh at each other. Each set has 8 different styles of mustache so we'll have plenty to choose from.

This is what they look like:

OH I LOVE THAT!!!!

OM bought me flowers. I'm tickled pink by that. Just because I'm not used to anybody doing anything for me for V-day. My ex always refused to do anything for me for V-day.

Hi Mabel
Valentin's Day is the type of day when you do not need a reason to show your SO that you love them. My Mother and Father were married Sixty Years and every Valentin's Day Dad would take Mom over the Manhattan to a show and eat in the one of the better Restaurants. And one year my Sister and I gave
them a special Valentin's Day outing. In New York City a company call World Cruises have Valentin's Day Diner Cruise .The Cruise departs the pier just as the sun sets and sails around Manhattan Island and the view from the boat is a thing that dreams are started from. We had a Limo pick Mom and Dad at the house and take them to the pier and return them to the house at the end of the Cruise. And when they got home they told us what a nice time they had. So you can have any size Valentin's Day event you want and can afford. Remember its not the cost, but to show that special Person in your life how much you love them!

Mabel Hi
We had planed to be together last Friday February but the best laid plains do go wrong. We are planning for us be together by the fourth of April.
As far a V Day goes we will try to talk for more then our record of FIVE Hours.
I have sent my Love a V Day Card. and when we are finely together. I plan
a weekend get away. We will take in a Concert and stay at a Country Inn for the weekend arrive Friday and return Home on Monday evening. I have arranged for the wife of My Fire Chief to have her look out My Girl's daughter while we are getting to know each other up close and personal. The Chief and his wife have five Kids. And I will love not having to deal with the time gap of five hours Right now I may not what Day of the week it is but I always know what time it is in London. Being that this is my first real relationship with any female. And It has turned out to be a roller coaster Ride. Full of ups and downs. Some mornings I wake up and want to swim the Atlantic to be with my love. And some mornings I wake up and say to myself just inn the heck are you doing. But most mornings its I want to swim the Atlantic to her. Now If I could only Swim?
The other night We had a auto accident in the District. And the car had taken down a power pole, So we had to wait for the power company to come and cut the power. And one of the guys came over to me and told me Bob we know you are in love. But do us a favor and marry the girl already. You do nothing
but talk about your lady. I have noticed that even when I writhe messages about her I am long winded.
I guess they are all right I AM IN LOVE. WOW

My husband proposed to me on Valentine's Day 2007.... I will never forget the day because of how it is tied to the holiday in America.

Yes, long term couple do celebrate here !! Flowers, candy, cards, dinner out, etc. ... and sometimes even diamond rings (depending on budgets, etc.).

Roses and a card were here at home when I returned form grocery shopping today; and now Jake and I are going out for prime rib. It does make it special to have one day set aside to acknowledge nationally that love is important and amazing...whatever you think about the commercial aspects of it:)

My husband proposed to me on Valentine's Day 2007.... What sweet to hear this !! A very special day indeed!

Well about being commercial!
We enjoyed an royale brunch in a beautiful old city, Harderwijk! Then went bowling and canoeing! Did an archery competition. And I saw him play, on high level,a table tennis tournament with formidable rivals!
I think i have never laughed so complete about our silly'ness as on this V-day.
cause..
We bought ourselves a Wii, that Day!!!!!!!!!!

What a world..:bgrin2:

I have actually heard a lot of negative grumblings about V-day this year. I think people do complain about the commercialism, just as with any holiday. However, I noticed that it makes people who are not in a relationship, oftentimes feel sad or not good about themselves. :( One guy actually said if he hears anymore about Valentine's day, he will go burn down a flower shop. That kind of makes me laugh, but I can understand how frustrating it can be.

I sold almost 1000 dozen roses this year out of my service station. While the commercialism on any holiday annoys me, I am a capitolist at heart so I "suffer" :)

What's annoying is the "obligation" because to me, as a guy, it minimizes the value in bringing home flowers, chocolates, or whatever. Of course if you don't, you're in trouble.

I would think randomly bringing home flowers "just because" would mean far, far more to most women.

Mebel, we agreed to not do anything for Valentine's day because both of our birthdays are coming up soon and we like to do something special together for those. We usually take a little weekend trip. :)

Very funny, Truckman! (gas station roses) Very impressive, too!

I agree with the random flowers... almost nothing makes me happier. I love flowers, and not especially expensive ones... a mixed colorful bouquet will do the trick.

Curious, tell me Truckman!

I live in a land full with flowers, and seen some change! A decade ago it was not very appropriate to buy or..appreciated to get flowerbouquet's from the gas stations.
A bit un-done! It was more the "small ,sudden" excuse gift, going from A to B, and not come ((home)) empty handed!

The flowers were old already. And stand vertical in a vase for only 1 day!. So you as the receiver had alot of work to do,, being very grateful, accept the excuse's, search the vase, and cut them one by one to give them the opportunity to sip water again.

Mostly men bought these poor bundles with alot of leafs in it!
But....gasmen saw money in it!

Today they sell us beautiful creative seasonal arrangements, with lots of variation!

Even I buy them.

Well, I am not in a relationship, but if I hear that people in a relationship do nice and romantic things for each other, I am happy for them.
In Germany I know many people in a relationship who complain that V-day is "the florist's €-holiday". :D
