I am starting to exercise (cardio) and I looked up the American Heart Association data to try to figure out my target heart rate while I exercise. I found this table.
I am 56, so my top target heart rate should be 140. But at that heart rate, I feel that I am not exercising, that is just like a stroll in the park. If I walk at a brisk pace my heart rate goes up to 155, and I feel quite comfortable at that rate, not straining at all. So... what should I do? Walk real slow, so my HR does not go above 140, or keep the brisk pace? Or can I safely try and go to 165, until my body gets used to the exercise?
