Come on, there has got to be more than just me who love electric guitar virtuosity. Arpegios, pick sweeps, two hand tapping, turning the amp up to 11 and playing the entire melodyline legatto with the left hand while waving to the audience with the right.

Shredders unite! Steve Vai, Chris Impelliterri, Joe Satriani, George Lynch, Ynwie J. Malmsteen, Eddie VanHalen, Vinnie Moore, Vivian Campbell. Surely, at least some of these guys have found a home in the musical heart of a few here at Ageless.

Vote on the poll, show your colors! Shred is not dead!

P.S.: I know this post may sound a bit over the top, but for those who are into this type of music, you've probably seen similar lingo in Guitar World, Guitar Player, or Guitar One Magazines. Just having fun with one of my favorite musical styles, and having fun at nobody's expense.

RE: No shredders in rap and hip hop

I stated this in the poll, not to disrespect those styles, but because rap and hip hop are not guitar oriented music. For those of you who listen to these styles, I mean no disrespect. I have no doubt that there is a sampling, scratching, rapping equivallent to a shredder in these styles, but I have no clue as to what the term might be.

Steve Vai has to edge it.. just..

Streff, I've got a video file of Via's Bad Horsie that just rips...I'll send it to you as soon as I find it.

Also...for sheer breathtaking speed, take a look at a guy named Michael Angelo Batio. My oldest son (who also needs a fire extinguisher close at hand when he plays, BTW:D ) turned me on to this guy a while back. http://www.metalmethod.com/42_store.htm Use the "click here" Windows Media link near the bottom of the page. About 2 minutes in, you'll swear this guy is from another planet.

Also for me (being the blues fan that I am), no discussion of the movie Crossroads would be complete without props to Ry Cooder, who laid down the killer blues licks for that movie and dozens of others.

Another name that should be mentioned in the same breath with these guys is Rusty Cooley. http://www.rustycooley.com My son studied with him for over a year before Rusty moved back to Texas in 2002. very clean picking technique and very, VERY fast.

I met Michael Angelo at a guitar clinic at a local music store. What an awesome guitarist! He signed my guitar, and talked for a few. Very cool guy.

Viv Campbell, formerly of Dio, now of Def Leppard, is also an excellent player. I would have put both gentlemen on the poll, but it only allowed ten choices.

Nuno is a great player too! But if you like Vai, check out the latest G3 video.
Malmsteen, Vai, and Satriani together on the same stage! A previous G3 has Vai, Satriani, and Eric Johnson.

Streff and I are going to G3 in Glasgow next month!
WOOHOO!
Vai wins for me too, although Satriani is a damn close second, and his version of Beethovens 5th is incredible .
It's on June 23rd, I can't wait!!:D

(Stan, I'm with you though, Ry Cooder will always be my favourite guitar player, must be an age thang!;) )

Wish I was going to be in Glasgow next month. I just saw G-3 in January, have the video, and just saw Yngwie and George Lynch last month, but I'd love to see G-3 again, even if it is the same guys. I as5ume that Yngwie is still the third player. If so, you are in for an awesome show. Those three together are dynamite, with nuclear power!

I know you will enjoy it! BTW, Vai plays a tripple neck Ibanez Gem on 'I know you're here'. Very visually impressive. Best thing was, these three are really having fun!! You will too!

Nope, the third player is a gentleman called Robert Fripp...

Should be just as good though...

Yes, it should! Robert Fripp is supposed to be an
excellent player. Anyone touring with Vai and Satch is going to be excellent anyway.

I would gather that Malmsteen is still in the thick of his 'Attack' tour.

Wow! I managed two posts in one day. I used to post four or five times a day, but then I began having pesky
computer problems that still are not 100% fixed. I also think my ISP is less than impressive, so I am in the proscess of replacing both the ISP and the computer.

I'll be waiting to hear how you liked the show, and what you think of Robert Fripp.

ms683,
If you like Kerry King, check out the BC Rich KKV guitar (the American one, not the Indonesian one in the three hundred dollar pack).
That thing rocks!

RE: What the heck is shred?

I see that four people voted 'what the heck is shred?'

Well, shred is usually applied to heavy metal musicians who play exceedingly fast and have a high level of technique. Jimi Hendrix was really the first modern shredder, and was quickly followed by Ritchie Blackmore. Eddie VanHalen certainly set a new standard, and he was followed by Randy Rhodes, who was so good that he gave Ozzy a successful solo career. Yngwie Malmsteen came along just a tad later, and raised the bar even higher. Since then, there have been many noteworthy shredders, the most commony known being Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

But there are shredders in other styles of music as well. James Burton certainly qualifies, and some of his work with Elvis was simply amazing, as did Scotty Moore, Elvis' guitar player in the fifties. For those of you who have a taste for country, check out the Hellecasters.

In any case, lots of notes played with lots of speed is the main hallmark of shred. While speed by itself does not necesarilly make one player better than another, it is an important part of shred.

i assume that all of you know about Michael Angelo's Double neck guitar, right?

Guitar One Magazine chose Michael Angelo Batio as the Number 1 Shredder of All Time.

and i love Van Halen and Malmsteen and Vai is just awesome along with Satriani but Angelo is out of this world and you can see the 4 necks guitar in my signature.

Dmn sure shred ain't dead

Hi there everybody. Just wanted to say "shred ain't dead". I saw a few virtuose guitar players, but those are not real shredders. Sorry for my spelling mistakes but I come from Holland. That doesn't mean that I'm a dutch man. Anyway back to the main topic. Eddie van Halen, Satriani, Vai and some other guitarists aren't real shredders. Yngwie, Impelliterri those are real shredders with a neo-classical influence. There are many more virtuoses. Except there aren't that many people that like the music. I love it ! And I love playin' it. But everybody has got there own taste and that also counts for music. My favorited shred song is Hyperspace by Pascal Alliagre at this time, but I have so many favorite players. So that's why shred ain't dead for me.
