Tips for a better Forum

Some tips:
1. Avoid broad generalizations. And yes, saying that something is 99% this or 1% that are broad generalizations.
2. If you feel that a person is making personal attacks against you, do not reply in the thread, but rather report the post.
3. If you feel the thread is getting off topic, do not reply to off-topic posts, but rather guide the discussion back on topic.
4. Do not post your personal information.
5. Think of discussion and debate as a vehicle to learn about new issues. Before posting in a debate, read perspectives from different sources, this makes your post stronger because you have the view of the issue from different angles.
6. Accept differences of opinion and constructive criticism.
7. Avoid the US vs THEM mentality. (Conservatives vs Liberals, OW vs YW, Men vs Women)
8. Think before you post, if you think that your post is going to bring comments that you do not like, will not follow, or will upset you, do not post. An example: If my partner is a drunk that breaks things in the house, and beats the dog, but I do not want to leave him(her), or hear about it, I will not post asking for advice, because the most likely response I will get is "dump the jerk".
9. Ageless should be a place to have fun and interesting discussions, not to pick fights. If you want to pick fights... kill a few zombies in a video game. :D

I don't think it would be construed as a broad generalization if I were to say that 99% of our members are peaceable and capable of civil, rational, and well-informed discussion and debate, as well as expressing their strongly felt opinions with courtesy and respect. The remaining 1% who are not, who repeatedly devolve into appalling rudeness and disrespect... those member(s) should not be tolerated and should be banned.

Good reminders, SLK. Unfortunately those who tend to violate these guidelines the most are often the ones least likely to read and agree with the guidelines. But, at least posting them leaves no doubt as to expectations.

I will personally commit to not responding to.....or participating in....posts from individuals who continually violate these guidelines, who seem to have a pattern of violating the guidelines, not just an occasional slip-up or overstepping of them.

Another Tip I would include is:

- Please do not publicly request that a member be banned. This can be done via PM to the mods. In the meantime, use the ignore feature in the software and the ignore feature we were all born with, which is to choose to stay away from people/situations that we do not like.

Again, if you think someone should be banned, bring that up to the moderators.
If you think a post is disrespectful report it. So if there is a post with offensive asterisks, go back and report it.
If you think a thread is inflamatory, report it.
Moderators will let you know of the actions that were taken regarding the report.
A person is not banned because a bunch of members start posting in the public forum that a person should be banned.
I hope that the message got through despite the cultural differences.

This thread is about "Tips for a better Forum"
It is very general and not targeted to individuals.
It is not intended to complain about a member or members, but rather to point out positive and negative BEHAVIORS.

How about if we try to have a Chit Chat thread that does not need to be moved to the Den because it becomes a discussion.

I am sure that we can all try to make Ageless into something like this:

Would love to report it using the report feature, but the entire thread has since been deleted.

Posted with quotations and that got deleted too.

How do we report a moderator?

All reported posts fall in a Moderators Box that is seen by all 3 moderators.
You can PM a moderator with CC to the other moderators with your concerns.

A reminder:
Rule #7
Moderation:
Members are asked to not act as “back seat moderators”. If members note an issue which violates the forum rules, they should report the post by clicking the red triangle in the upper right hand corner of the post window. Do not respond to such topics yourself. Members who constantly “act” as moderators may be warned.
Warnings and bans are not to be discussed on the forum. Such matters shall remain private between the moderation team and the member involved.
As with any member, public criticism of moderation staff members or this site’s moderation policies is not allowed. If you have questions or constructive criticism regarding the moderation staff and/or moderation policies of Agelesslove.com, please contact the moderation team or the site administrator directly via private message

what if a member PMs another member (privately) and calls them, for example, a moron or a tree hugging anti-american socialist hippie or an ethnicity baiter? lol.

Actually, on our current format, it's the black triangle in the lower left hand corner of the post window. :)

Thank you for sharing these tips with the members, SLK. Just a reminder to all, there is a link to the rules for the forum at the top. See the link titled Board Rules. They are pretty clear cut. There are also rules for The Den. Always a good idea to periodically review them.

I have read a lot of posts complaining that members are allowed to get away with rules violations. But, prior to the latest brouhaha, we only had 3 reported posts in the last month, and not about the member you may be thinking of.

If you have concerns about potential rules violations, report the post. If you can't figure out how to use the forum features to do so, then PM either of the mods or myself.

Well said, truckman. There is a quote I am often reminded of, and am sure I won't quote it correctly, but it goes something like this.... Life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I choose to respond to it.

Just want to clarify that if you have a concern about a moderator, you would need to PM me. You would not cc the other moderator.

Thank you.
